Here's a wacky idea: what would you think of a Fallout TV series where the protagonist is the president of the US shortly after the bombs fell? Or even just a Fallout game where you play the president. Sort of like a "captain goes down with his ship" idea story, except the captain survives and makes it his goal to restore some semblance of civilization to the ruined world.
Yeah, I know that goes against some of the lore, but forget that for a minute. I dunno why, but playing as the president strikes me as adding a flavourful bite of context that might make things a little more interesting.

Damn. Higher difficulties spawn more legendaries? Now I wish there was multiplayer in the game. It would be fun taking on tough monsters with a buddy.
Got any tips in the category of "I wish that I knew that before I start playing the game"? I'm a Fallout veteran, so I don't really want to go through the usual "stumble through the game screwing things up and not realizing it" phase. It's cute the first few times, but I'd rather hit the ground running this time around.

Right
Food is actually a viable means of healing now, even with the rads. Hell, if you pick up Ghoulish then the rad heal you, though you'll need a high END for that perk. You'll want a high intelligence, as that now helps experience. Pistols are probably what you're going to using for a while, so gunslinger is useful(though not for any automatic weaponry). I also picked up Medic for increased stimpack healing. Crafting perks are also useful for making better equipment, though I would stay away from Science as you likely won't have the materials yet to make that viable yet, though you will need it for the better scopes.
On crafting, loot everything, even the crap. It can be broken down into useful materials. The red rocket place where you meet Dogmeat will make an excellent crafting base. You can make cooked food here. Cooked food = better healing + exp the first time you make it. Actually that last part applies to mods you make for the first.
Oh btw, the first time you pick up a chaingun, don't use it against the raiders you're fighting. There's something worse that will show up mid-fight.

Yeah, I'm actually making an effort to pick up meats for food. Stims are now percentage based healing which isn't much at low levels, so I need those 100 HP+ healing items. Some tend to have nifty effects too.
While I'm impressed with some aspects of Fallout 4, I'm disappointed by other elements. The legendary system, while wicked cool, does completely crush that Fallout "feel" the moment you pick up a good legendary weapon. Before, I'm struggling to figure out how to make the weapons and armour I have work which works great with the extensive modding system. I actually had to get creative with a lot of encounters because of how quickly my weapons and armour became weak (granted, an "explorer" playthrough tends to see you underleveled for most things). Grabbing every piece of junk, carefully watching the shops for the parts I needed, spending hours in the workshop getting my weapons just right, approaching every encounter to make the most of the weapons I had...that's Fallout. Heck, I even sniped the Director of the Mr. Handy Galleria through a window from a long ways away. Didn't kill him, even with 40 bullets, but still, it felt cool.
Then I found a Wounding Auto Pipe Pistol and an Instigating Shotgun. Now it doesn't matter what I go up against. Deathclaws and groups of super mutants can still chew through my HP like nothing, but it doesn't matter because half a clip of my Wounding gun kills them even quicker. Not sure if my shotgun is working because it seems like double damage from a Powerful 70 damage shotgun should do more damage on first shot, but I gave it a long barrel and it still reliably blows heads off in VATS. Now the game feels more like Borderlands, although there is nothing wrong with that. Thankfully, it wouldn't be difficult to do a "no legendaries" run, so it's not that big a deal.
I also find the Perk table to be a step back from New Vegas. Only one Perk for explosives? And it has large gaps between each rank? Once again, I'm picking perks not based on build, but because I have to or that I have nothing else to pick. I'm quickly becoming an "every build". It's not that big a deal, but I really wish the Perk system supported my build, like in New Vegas, rather than my "build" being dictated by what I find and choose to use. I want to run around throwing explosives, but I can't, because grenades are rare and I can't make any decent ones until I've gained 2 ranks in Demolitions (and Science, sadly). Of course, mobs toss bombs around with wild abandon which has really made the game more difficult than I expected.
The game is still fun, I just wish it felt more like New Vegas than Fallout 3. At least there doesn't seem to be a level balancing system in place. Upon reaching the crashed jet, I suddenly seem to be encountering far more powerful enemies than just raiders and bloat flies.

Did Dunwich Borers. A mine with so many similar blocky looking walls is a really good setting for psychological horror. And hey, three legendary ghouls!
I also have to admit the enemy variety in F4 is finally at a decent level. Gotta give the "Most Improved Enemy" award to the Children of Atom. I was not expecting a bunch of irradiated lunatics to be so tough, but then, chucking miniature nukes like crazy and planting nuke mines would make anyone tough.

Yes. That was unexpected, especially when the first one got the bright idea to break away from the main squad and circle around behind me, although so far the biggest surprise I've encountered is Atom disciples tossing nuke grenades. My biggest regret so far is destroying the robot at the Robotics Disposal Depot. Didn't know you could command it. I just assumed it was an ambush.
Is there any surefire way to tell whether or not a legendary prefix comes from a modded part or the base object? Also, are any of those islands scattered off the coast worth exploring? I've found a few sunken ships and camps, but so far it's just a bit of ammo and the odd gun or two.

Apparently some legendaries are fixed to the mods in a gun and not the base gun itself. This is pretty rare though, but it does happen. I just don't know how you can tell without removing every mod one by one. Armour though is always fixed to the base.
And I just stumbled across Libertalia, so there is at least one sea-based location worth exploring, heh.

Finished exploring all of the regions north of the city sections. Now exploring the western section of the map. I was going to start exploring a section of Boston north of Diamond City, but I had a taste of the city (the ship stuck in a building) and saw that the city is nothing like Washington DC from Fallout 3. Boston is full of nooks and crannies, often with multiple unmarked locations within a single block. It's also loaded with robots. Think I'll leave the city sections for last.
And what's up with the computer passwords? I've gotten a few now that gave "wrong" answers. I've had a bunch of terminals tell me every guess I made had absolutely "zero" similarities only for the correct password to have many of the correct letters. The worst was the correct answer for "home". The guess "hope" and "hand" had zero similarities.

After exploring the Glowing Sea-I was hoping for something much more interesting in the impact crater than a few Children of Atom zealots, which is too bad because the Glowing Sea has a very neat "final zone" feel to it which none of the other Fallout games had-I decided to run around Boston with a few new guns I picked up. Went nuts with the Railway Gun and a Wounding Missle Launcher. I think Crippling might have been a better choice for the launcher. A Poisoned shotgun sucks.
Boy, the framerate sucks in the city. I'm glad that's the only area that seems to suffer.

That said, I still have yet to see the highest tier of weapons even though I'm at lv.39. Still haven't seen a Gauss Rifle.

I've finished exploring the south and now I only have the inner city left to explore. Surprised that I've only found two named weapons: The Gainer and Tessa's Fist. Lots of legendaries, of course. Mostly blah armours, but I did pick up a Two Shot Magnum (does a lot less damage than it lists though).
I know there are legendaries in stores, but so far the only place I've seen rare stuff for sale is in Fenwa...I mean, Diamond City. Those prices would certainly eat my caps, heh.

Nope. No questing. Just pure exploration. Trying to get a feel for the world and any secrets first. When I eventually get to actual builds, I want to know where all the cool stuff is to create the build I want rather than slowly stumbling upon it. Nothing sucks more than creating a built but not having the right weapons for it until much later.

Depends on how good you are at stealth really, and how much you would use a sniper rifle. If the answer is not much, then automatic is probably the way to go.

Mwa, ha, ha, ha! Thought I would never find a replacement for my Wounding automatic, but the S&P just tears through everything in a couple of shots. Don't even have to hit anything dead-on. The splash damage alone makes things explode. I destroyed all of Vault 81 and Diamond City with it, he he.

There are some smart bandits out there though which is basically any group that arms their guys with any one of the plethora of Fat Man launchers lying around.
