So, first reactions: apparently the graphics suck. I don't really care, but the thing that struck me the most was how unoriginal the game looked. I liked Fallout 3 and all, and I liked New Vegas better, but if Fallout 4 is just Fallout 3 with a few new locations-same guns, perks, and all that-then I can't see myself enjoying the game very much. Not for more than one playthrough anyway.

Boston. Apparently you can explore Fenway Park in the game (not that I think you really care, but I watch baseball, so it's cool to me).

Well, the Bethesda conference came and went. If you're a PC gamer and really love the same old, same old, then I'm sure you will be happy with the announcements they made. I was less than impressed, and not sure why anyone else would be, but Doom and Fallout 4 will still be worth a rental at the very least.

I was kind of hoping that they'd at least announce where the next Elder Scrolls would be set.
So what would encourage you to play through Fallout 4 for more than once?

Well, they've announced more details since the reveal. There's a whole crafting system going on now, including the ability to build a settlement and furnish it the way you want. That could be cool.
Meaningful customization is the key thing for me. One of the reasons why I burned out on Fallout 3 and Skyrim so quickly is because you ALWAYS had to choose the same perks and abilities. Even when I built my no combat, all Luck/Personality character in Fallout 3, I found myself running out of choices at level up to support my build and I HAD to choose combat abilities I didn't want (and too many Perks just outright sucked. Bonus 20 skill points for a character earning 10 per level? No thanks). Same deal with Skyrim: it's always Smithing, Enchanting, and Alchemy. Even if you don't use those abilities, so what? You're still either a melee dude, sneaky archer, or magicky mage...and you will still pay for smithing, steal gems, and hoard potions. The more unique skills like theft and speech are loaded with options that just downright suck or can be beaten in other ways (again, alchemy), and you need to buy DLC to make werewolves and vampires decent (and then you can change into a wolf or suck blood while looting those dungeons. Whoopee).
I still played both games a great deal, especially after the DLC's came, but it wasn't like Morrowind where every time I had a new build idea I had to try it. I would jump into the game with the new idea, start building it up and then feel like it was just the same old, same old. Even my "normal Nord life, live off the land" character in Skyrim essentially became an archer. Hunt animals, gather skins, sell them for money so I can buy a house...wait a sec, how is this any different than looting far more interesting locations?
This is one of the reasons why I enjoy New Vegas so much. The options are IMPACTFUL and there are more of them. When building my laser commander, I actually found myself choosing options besides the reliable choices because the laser specific options were so good. There are some very special dialogue options you don't get without a very high Perception and Speech skill, Intelligence means a whole lot more than just skill points and can allow you to clear many quests very quickly, and high Luck can allow you to wreak havoc in the casinos (there are even achievements for it). What does high luck get you in Fallout 3? Er...more crits, I guess? Less likely to detonate mines? Both abilities easily matched by perks.
Huh. That turned into a rant. Well, I really like games where I can play through with different builds and that build can change how the game plays. FFT is my all time favourite because of it. Playing through the game with a group of sneaky ninjas requires completely different tactics and quest choices than a group of knights who just charge in and swing away.

Elijah was a bastard. Just as well he didn't get the Helios ONE weapon working. Almost made me feel sorry for Veronica. Almost. She did have an okayish skill. Speaking of the BoS, I found it odd they were the ones upgrading EDE with armour, and the Followers were the ones upgrading the weapons. You would think it would be the other way around. I'm kinda curious to see how the BoS are doing in F4. Also whether the Legion are going to be in F4.

I actually heard the complete opposite: that the Brotherhood were fanatical tech scavengers who didn't give a damn about anyone else, not necessarily evil just selfish, and that in Fallout 3 they were more like the good guys.
I really don't know either way. Fallout 3 was my first.

Yeah, the way I heard it, the Enclave in Fallout 3 was a more accurate depiction of what the Brotherhood is like. To be fair, Fallout 3 does mention on numerous occasions that the Brotherhood in Washington is actually a splinter group and that their ideas of acting like protectors did not gel well with the others. Heck, a few Brotherhood members complain they should be seeking tech instead of patrolling.

Interestingly it looks like the settlement is a bit more complicated. Apparently you can customise several settlement, and send merchants on trade routes between them. You'll also have to construct defenses to protect your town. It may even dislodge Batman Arkham Knight off my first game to buy, when I upgrade to PS4.

Everything I've heard about Arkham Knight is that it sucks. It relies way too heavily on the Batmobile, pretty much the second half of the game uses it, and the story is cheesy and predictable. It was not created for fans of the first game.
As for Fallout 4, Bethesda often promises the moon and delivers two cheeks. Lately they've been streamlining the ES formula, so I doubt this feature will be all that complicated. Big AAA studios don't really do complicated anymore.

I always thought melee was viable in Fallout 3/New Vegas especially if you use any of the trick weapons. They're just not as much fun as the lever-action rifle.

The only way I saw it being viable was with good armour and DT. Even then you would have to be insane to take on Deathclaws, giant radscorpions and Cazadore swarms.

I took them on just fine. With good armor, of course, and Stealth kills were always the best, but they could work if you planned ahead somewhat.
Note Fallout 3 melee was far more viable than in New Vegas. The Damage Threshold thing really keeps it in check; however, I haven't done my pure melee build in New Vegas yet. I hear that knife you can find in a grave near the beginning of the game can do some serious damage once leveled up.

Okay had a brief go. It's still Fallout, but they've made a few changes$ Power armour, for example, is more like a vehicle. You get in and out of it, and if you're not careful it can be GTA'ed. Like a vehicle it needs a power source called a fusion core. Intelligence no longer governs skill points, but is still important as it mods the exp you get. Combat wise enemies are much smarter, and will gang up on you, use grenades to flush you out of cover, investigate when they find dead friends, and call you hurtful names. Hell even feral ghouls will ambush you by playing possum. Dogmeat has a grusome finisher via jumping on a weakened foe, and ripping the throat out. Boy, did that catch me by surprise. My pal showed me some of the crafting and mod system. Looks like there's a lot you can do.

The general consensus I'm getting is that it's really more of the same, especially since it uses the same engine as Fallout 3, although id Games did the shooting mechanics, so that might spice things up. Then again, I heard they're still not that great and it's all about VATS. That's fine by me. VATS makes the game feel more like an RPG. If I wanted a shooter/RPG, I'd play Borderlands.
