*Updated Xelander's ref. sheet
* * * * *
"That sucked," Kay grumbles as he snatches up the black torch and his club. Cealia recovers her scimitar while the ghostly Torryn nudges the druid. The dwarven ancestor simply stares at Eadbald, its emotions masked by the helmet's visor, while the ashen cat rubs up against Xelander's leg.
Kay rubs the back of the wolfhound. "You guys are supposed to help us, not steal the show."
The wolfhound begins to sniff the air. Seemingly catching a scent, it begins to follow the smell to the room beyond the barracks.
"Looks like he's got something. Let's keep moving. The faster we get out of here, the better," Kay says as he follows the hound. Kay's suggestion seems fair, so the party follows.
THE SPIRIT VAULT: The Commander's Ward ***************
The next room is very different from the cavernous confines of the Spirit Vault. This section of the Conakor tomb appears to be neatly hewn and hand-carved. It's a circular room, roughly 30 ft. in diameter, and the ceiling rises about 40 ft. Niches filled with bundles, probably the corpses of Conakor warlords, lines the walls, many of which include weapons and armour. There are 3 more stone doors, these ones featuring iron rings for handles, at the north, east, and western sides of the rooms. These doors are flanked by statues depicting what appears to be great Conakor heroes, but none are easily recognizeable due to great wear from water and the odd patch of moss. These doors are also marked, this time by carvings on the doors themselves: the left is marked by a pair of crossed axes, the north door by a rod and a bowl, and the eastern door by a boat.
But there is another major feature that marks this room: sitting in the middle of the room is an altar. Upon the altar is an armoured skeleton, which is still armed with an ancient weapon and a bit jewelry, overlooking the rest of the room. It appears to be "guarding" the room. A couple rods and a few hooks support the skeleton.
"What an intimidating figure. I wonder if this is...?" Kay shakes his head. "Nah. They never found his body."
The wolfhound is nowhere in sight.

Eadbald eyes the skeleton warily. He cares not for what adorns it, only that it stays where it is. He looks around the room, noticing the wolfhound has gone. He asks his spirit if he has seen it.

(Jesus Christ. What the hell.... ) Xelander takes a look at the statues without leaving the torches field of light. Looking for any plaques that may have names on them, he moves along to the doors. "More doors? How far in is this elder, anyway?" Pointing to the door with the crossed axes, he says, "Could this be an armory? Pointing to the door with the rod and bowl, he says, "Alchemy?" Pointing to the door with the boat, he says, "Explorers?" "Which door tickles your fancy, cat?"

(Eh?) * * * * *
The dwarven ancestor shrugs at Eadbald. It then soundlessly makes its way over to the skeleton and begins to examine it.
Xelander makes his away around the perimeter of the room, at least as far as the torch allows, and notes every door's features. When he asks his question to the ashen cat, it glances in the direction of the boat-marked door.

Cealia doesn't pay much attention to the skeleton either. She notices xelander over by the boat door and walks over to him.
"You haven't seen the wolfhound have you? You think he went through this door?"

[glow=red,6,300]UPDATE[/glow] ***************
Eadbald begins muttering to himself. Kay looks at him in confusion for a moment, but the dwarf eventually stops muttering. He almost seems stunned. Kay shrugs it off and dismisses the disturbance as another one of the Vault's weird tricks.
Xelander doesn't find any plaques identifying the bodies of the corpses, nor does he spot anything else to identify them. Not at the bottom of the room or at the top of the room. When he reaches the boat-marked door, Cealia cuts through the center portion of the room to talk with Xelander, but she stops at the sound of cracking timbers beneath her feet. She looks down in time to watch the floor begin to bowl beneath her. Only then does she notice the floor isn't made out of stone, and as she does so, the floor tilts so much the altar tips over and smashes through the floor. The rest of the central area of the room begins to collapse as the altar crashes into the chamber below, and Cealia finds herself going down.
Eadbald is there. He grabs the catfolk's flailing hand and pulls her to the very edge of the room, which is safe from the collapse, but a few loose stones fall free directly beneath the dwarf's feet, and he is unable to maintain his balance. He cartwheels into the secret chamber, and soon everything is obscurred by rising dust.
After a few moments of coughing, Kay, who had dived back into the Barracks tunnel, crawls towards the huge hole in the floor.
"Eadbald? You okay? Hey, dwarf! Answer me!"
Cealia and Xelander, who also pressed themselves against the wall, join Kay at the edge of the hole. After a few more moments, they spot Eadbald lying face down near a pair of rotted support beams. Toughened animal skin blankets the floor of the hidden chamber, and bits of rock and crushed stone lie throughout. The altar sits on its side near the center of the chamber, and the skeleton is completely smashed.
This is when the party spots a large, blackstone sarcophagus sitting directly in the center of the chamber. It's raised above the mess somewhat, but it's still a good 15 ft. below the edge of the rest of the room.
"Oh my...I think they found his body after all," Kay mutters in amazement. He shakes his head, and cups his hands over his mouth. "HEY! Eadbald! Come on, you're too tough to go down after a little tumble. Wake up!"
A few seconds later, Eadbald begins to stir. He coughs a bit of dust, then rises to his knee and wipes dirt off of his shoulders. Because he fell at the end of the collapse, he managed to avoid any truly dangerous stuff. Once he gets his bearings, Eadbald finds an outstretched dwarven gauntlet reaching out to him. Eadbald grips the gauntleted hand, and the dwarven ancestor helps him to his feet.
"Excellent. I was worried you wouldn't be able to deal with a slight fall," a deep, soul-shaking voice speaks. It resonates off the walls and gives the party the impression it is coming from all directions.
Everyone is violently reminded of the panick-inducing nature of the Spirit Vault. The voice seems to stab directly at whatever it is that's keeping everyone from screaming and fleeing back to the surface. Kay, his teeth chattering like a little kid attempting to enter a dark basement all by his lonesome, clutches the blacktorch to his chest like some kind of protective shield. He allows his real shield to clatter to the ground.
"W-who is there? Speak, s-s-spirit! We're n-not afraid of y-you," Kay is suddenly joined by Cealia and Xelander who find themselves unable to move more than a few feet from eachother.
The voice cackles. The rising sound of every laugh almost breaks all sanity the party may have left.
Oddly, Eadbald finds himself spared from this intimidating presence. He begins to look around for some easy way out of the sunken chamber, but there doesn't appear to be any quick ways out. The dwarven ancestor has his warhammer raised and his intently studying the wall on the other side of the room. After the laughter subsides, a dark, shadowy spirit seems to ooze out of the rock and collesce into the figure of some brutally injured man on the far side of the sarcophagus. His head is wrapped in bandages, which are heavily stained with blood, and there are large rips in his pants and shirt, both of which barely cover horrible injuries. His innards are clearly visible in numerous places, yet the spirit has little trouble maintaining his balance. He even has a shadowy blade gripped in his right hand, and traces of a chain shirt can be seen.
The spirit cocks its head in a most unnerving, unnatural position. It cackles again before addressing the party. "Not afraid? You are bathed in fear. Awashed in shadow. Hopelessly overcome by the darkness of the Vault. This is no place for the living."
Kay takes a deep breath before replying. "I-I am a shaman of Conakor. W-we have come to seek consul with an elder of the council. We mean no harm to any of the spirits here."
"You are an imperial!" the spirit hisses. "You don't belong here or anywhere in this land. None of your people do!" the spirit seems to take a moment to calm itself down before continuing. "Even you must know communicating with the elders in the Vault is forbidden. I can't let you pass."
"I come on an urgent mission and with the elders' blessing. Let them decide where I can and can't go."
The spirit shakes its head. It bares a toothy smile of cracked and chipped teeth. "Nope. Not today. I won't let you."
Kay almost sounds angry now. "And what authority has been bestowed upon you to restrict our entry, Broken One? A shamed warlord has no power here."
The spirit suddenly points its sword at Kay and absolutely shrieks in fury. "NEVER CALL ME THAT! EVER! I will NEVER tolerate that name ever again! I am High Warlord Aethalon, last of the great mountain kings! First chieften of the Conakors! I led your ancestors to safety. I built them into great warriors. I tried to help them recapture their lost heritage, but those cowards abandoned me when I needed them. Them and their 'wisemen'. COWARDS!"
"You were leading them to their suicides! The mountain citadels of old were lost. Accept that, and move on. Allow those of us who live today to battle those who would attempt to enslave us once again. Recover your lost honour, spirit, and allow us to pass. For Conakor! For the empire! And for all ancestors of the mountain kings," Kay ends that rallying-like cry with a shout.
The rising morale of the party is immediately quelled by another maddening laugh from the spirit. "You think I'm here to stop you from entering the Elders' Hall because I'm trying to protect them, don't you? Oh no, not at all. I'll never protect those cowards. Ever."
Kay blinks. "What? Then why are you...?"
The spirit flashes that broken smile again. "Here? Out and about? Why, I was released, of course...by that creature. Sealed for many millenia, but not anymore. Now I'm free, and those cursed dogs who abandoned me will pay."
Now the spirit's gaze drifts over to Eadbald. The dwarf shivers as his eyes meet the broken spirit's eyes. "But I'm not interested in dealing with you, shaman. I'm interested in something much stronger. A strong soul. A great hero," the spirit's unsettling gaze combines with his creepy grin to create a truly startling image. "A mighty warrior. After all, it's only proper to end a long sleep with a good workout, is it not?"
When the party realizes what's going on, they begin to approach the edge of the chamber, but the spirit suddenly throws up its free hand. Ice begins to rapidly form around the edge of the hole, and it mere seconds, a dome of solid ice completely separates the chamber from the room above. Kay bangs on the ice with the end of his torch, but it's not good. The ice is very solid.
And to make things even more complicated, more dark shadows begin to ooze forth from the walls of the room. Two fully collesce into warriors that look a lot like the defenders the party just encountered a few moments ago.
The broken spirit looks up. "Have fun dealing with them. Do as you like," he returns his gaze to Eadbald. "As you people say in this day and age...enguarde, is it?" He levels his shadowy blade at Eadbald.

Good luck, and try not to die. **Need actions before I roll Initiative Party: ?? Eadbald: ?? BROKEN SPIRIT: ?? Defender Spirits: ?? Kay suddenly waves his torch around. "Oh, no! The ice is diffusing the light of the torch! We can't allow Eadbald to fight that thing in the darkness! We have to do everything we can to make sure he's covered at all times." The torch's radius is reduced to only 15 ft. in the sunken chamber due to the ice-dome. Eadbald is currently within the torch's light. Everyone is currently standing at the southern edge of their respective chambers. The defenders stand on the left and right side of the dome, while the Broken Spirit stands opposite of Eadbald on the far side of the chamber. This spirit is free of the blacktorch's light. Eadbald is not intimidated by this spirit. "A challenge you want, a challenge you will get." He stays near the torchlight, watching the spirit. "If you think you can take me, come and get me. Give me the honor of at least fighting a fair fight." He bangs the back of his axe against the shield, as if to call the spirit out.

Cealia will run to Eadbald and use her CLW wand on him. Then she'll do some melee damage with her scimitar at the nearest defender spirit.
Torryn will attack the broken spirit.

(Fire typically melts ice, right? Unless the ice is magical...you'll just have to try it out...or make a spellcraft check. The fire will only affect a defender at the same time if it's close to the fireball) *Let me clarify: Eadbald is completely cut off from the rest of the party by the ice.

Cealia will cast Flaming Sphere to try and melt the ice dome enough where she can aid Eadbald. When a hole big enough to fit through opens up, she'll direct the flaming sphere towards the broken spirit. That is, of course, she can melt the ice at all. If not, she'll send it after one of the defender spirits. Torryn will attack the nearest defender spirit. (i totally meant to just modify my last post, but i accidently posted a new one. so..disregard earlier post, thanks.)

*Crabs has been removed from the game, but unlike most character removals, he's in a unique position to readily return as long as the party remains close to Kara'Conakor (that's the benefit of informing me of long absences BEFORE you disappear). **Hmm...using "red" updates seems to be a nice way to denote combat updates. [glow=red,6,300]UPDATE[/glow] ************** CHALLENGE BATTLE-Init: *Spirits act on your turn. BROKEN SPIRIT: 12, -11 HP, Flanked Cealia: 12 Xelander: 10 Kay: 9 Defender Spirits: 7 Eadbald: 6 COMBAT ##### Eadbald begins to bang his axe against his shield to taunt the broken spirit. The dwarven ancestor also agrees the gesture is warranted and begins to do the same, but the sound of his shield-banging is much more muted. The broken spirit laughs, then zips across the rubble...until he reaches the light. Once that happens, he begins to trip and stumble, but he still manages to reach Eadbald. The broken spirit has to run past the dwarven ancestor to do so, and receives a swipe for his trouble (gets smacked pretty hard on the shoulder fo -7 HP damage, but seems unhindered), and takes a swipe at Eadbald with a now non-shadowy, much more normal looking sword. Eadbald blocks the attack with his shield, but not easily. He quickly determines this attack was designed to test the dwarf's reflexes. When his turn comes, he decides to do the same, but a shred of uncertainty caused by this damn Vault causes him to waiver just enough to miss (would have hit if it weren't for the Shaken attack penalty). The dwarven ancestor sets up a flank with Eadbald. He fares much better at landing glancing blow (-4 HP). In the meantime, Cealia conjures a ball of fire onto the dome. It lands a few feet away from her onto the dome, but it begins to roll back to her. It takes all of Cealia's mental effort to keep the flaming sphere anchored in one place. The ice is definitely magical, but it is melting. Not nearly as quickly as normal ice should, but it is melting a 5 ft. round hole. For now, it has melted through 1/4 of the ice (-11 hp). While she is busy burning holes in the ice, Torryn charges the defender on the right side of the room, but doesn't overrun it. Instead, he rears and kicks at the defender, but the spirit has little trouble blocking the attack. It counters with a thwack on its turn and strikes the Torryn manifestation dead-on (-9). Xelander splashes a little acid on the defender to the left, but he's way off the mark. The ashen cat suddenly jumps into one of the niches storing a corpse. After a moment of concentration and a bit of acrobatic prowess, it jumps to the one above it, using some hanging cloth to climb onto the corpse. "Hoo boy," Kay mumbles as he uses his legs to sustain the torch and begins to prepare his bow. The defender on the left now acts. It shuffles over to Xelander at a fairly slow rate, but fast enough to reach the halfling before he can ready another spell. Xelander just barely ducks the defender's mace. The broken spirit glances at its material form. "What is this magic? I am...whole." [glow=red,6,300]UPDATE[/glow] ************** CHALLENGE BATTLE-Init: *Spirits act on your turn. BROKEN SPIRIT: 12, -11 HP, Flanked Cealia: 11 Xelander: 10 Kay: 8 Defender Spirits: 7, (-4,-17,0) Eadbald: 5 COMBAT ###### The Broken Spirit seems a little overconfident. It doesn't bother to move out of the flank it is currently subjected to, and focuses on dealing two quick slashes to the dwarf. Eadbald is able to block the second weaker slash, but the first finds its way through his defenses (-3 HP). The Broken Spirit suddenly looks up. "This light...never felt it before. It must be that torch! Get that torch, you fools!" Another defender's shadow suddenly appears from the tunnel to the Barracks. It immediately becomes material when it approaches Kay's torch, but that doesn't stop it from tackling the shaman. Kay is knocked down, as his his torch clatters to the floor. Eadbald is suddenly bathed in darkness, and the broken spirit and ancestor disappear. Cealia continues to concentrate on her fireball. It doesn't melt as much ice as last round (-3 HP). Torryn continues to rear on the defender, but the party doesn't hear much more than the crash of hooves on steel as the horse and defender wink out. Xelander takes a step away from the defender attacking him (that's what you mean, right? ;D), then lets loose with a shower of rocks from the ceiling. They come down with great, flesh-tearing force, although in this case, slight wisps of mist rise from the wounded defender (-2 HP). Xelander yells at the ashen cat. As if in direct reply, an old, rusty helmet falls from the niche and strikes the defender in the head (-2 HP). Kay causes his club to grow in size from a plain club to a large, thorny weapon. He grabs his shield, then rolls onto his back to face his attacker. Unfortunately, this prompts a strike from the defender, and Kay is unable to raise his shield in time to stop the attack (-7 HP). Now the defenders act. The one dealing with Torryn apparently tries to do something. There is a grunt and another loud clang, then the defender suddenly manifests as it nears Kay's fallen torch. It makes a beeline towards Cealia, then takes a swing. Busy concentrating, the defender has little trouble smacking Cealia dead-on in the bakc (-9 HP). Cealia turns to face the defender and begins to defend herself with a strike, but her sword gets blocked by the defender's shield. Thankfully, her flaming sphere isn't dependent on Cealia's concentration. The other two defenders also act. The next one steps into Xelander with a swing and strikes him in the chest (-7 HP), while the last swings at Kay again as he rolls around on the ground. He gets smacked again. Hard (-9 HP). The dwarven ancestor's actions execute in darkness. Eadbald can't tell if anything happens, but he finds his attacks are pointless. He can't strike a ghost under his current circumstances. BROKEN SPIRIT: 11, -27 HP Cealia: 11 Xelander: 10 Kay: 7 Defender Spirits: 6, (-20,-23,-43) Eadbald: 4 COMBAT ###### "Cursed are the living!" a voice shouts as Eadbald suddenly feels a terrible, icey pain dig into his abdomin. His arms suddenly feel a lot heavier (-2 STR). Cealia begins to focus entirely on defending herself while focusing on keeping the flaming sphere where it is. The sphere is about halfway through now (-7 HP). It better hurry, because it doesn't have much juice left in it. Torryn now comes charging in, manifesting as he enters the torch's light. The defender attacking Cealia tries to reposition himself to block the horse. Despite Torryn's size, the defender successfully pounds the horse into the wall, preventing him from getting by. Normally this would leave him open to an Atk. of Opps. from Cealia, but she's too busy concentrating and protecting herself to take advantage of the slip. Xelander can't tough out the defender attacking him forever, so the halfling spins around, jumps over Kay, then pops a lightning orb at the defender attacking Kay. This time he hits (-6 HP). The ashen cat jumps down from the niches, scampers past the defender, and jumps on the arm of the defender attacking Kay. It's by no means a damaging attack, but it is certainly distracting. From his spot on the ground, Kay lets loose another volley of sledgehammer-heavy bolts of pure light that begin to slam into every spirit within its radius, corporeal or not. All spirits (even the friendly ones I'm afraid) get knocked to the ground from the attack (-16 HP). Kay then gets to his feet. Only the ashen cat seems to have resisted its effect. Upon recovering from Kay's attack, the two defender spirits begin to press him again, the one by Cealia taking a hack at Torryn. Kay manages to block one attack with his club, but he isn't able to place his shield properly to block the second. Both he and Torryn take 4 HP damage. Eadbald begins to back away until he reaches some of the torch's light and his back hits the sunken chamber's wall. As he does so, a series of grunts emerge from the darkness. The dwarven ancestor must really be duking it out. "Somebody grab the torch!" Kay yells. All spirits (even the friendly ones I'm afraid) get knocked to the ground from the attack (-16 HP). Kay then gets to his feet. (This includes mine? We're behing the ice wall, does this affect his spell at all?) Eadbald calls out to his good spirit to bring the Bad Spirit closer so he can help.
