(.........oh I see, I just went back and re-read everything......I guess I didn't specifically say that they put the supplies into the duffle-bag (for some reason I imagined it though).......... either way, it's not a big deal..........lol - but their pockets must be really full....)

I thought they were taking the supplies and not the bag itself.
I guess this is a good time to bring up Inventory management. Was going to get into it with reference sheets. Not really too complicated: there is what you equip on hand like weapons and stuff, what you equip in pockets and the like that you might not be able to get to very quickly, and then there is everything else. Carrying too much can slow you down. I tend to note inventory changes in updates.

He has them, don't worry. I'm not being a stickler for inventory space right now, but it's good that you're noticing these things. So many people are used to unlimited inventories from video games that normally I just give up keeping track of them. INVENTORY UPDATE: Buffy picks up duffel bag (rope, flashlights, batteries, other supplies) Buffy headed in the direction of the groan, but how is her sense of direction? She listens to get a bead on where to go. Does Buffy accurately peg where the groan came from? I roll a 1d3. This is a matter of Perception. I roll a <blank>. *This is one of those times when the GM would NOT tell you the result. Truth is players don't always know when their senses have betrayed them or not especially when things like illusions come into play. It sounds like the groan came from the center of the area. Don't forget to use the 33 Utility Thread! It's a thread for all things related to the 33 rules. Handy place for asking questions specifically about the rules or just random banter about the games. If it doesn't feel quite game related, that's a safe place to talk about it. I often discuss new game ideas and character creation there.

(Actually, I totally agree with you - I was already thinking that it would be hard to peg the direction a "groan" in tunnels like these ones.....)
Buffy stops jogging and walks towards the center of the area, keeping an ear open for more noises. As she does, she looks back at Xander and whispers to him, "Do you think it's this way?"

Xander looked around. "I think it came from...wherever you're facing. And wherever you stand between me and it. So...let's go in whatever direction that happens to be."
At some point Xander got his hands on a broom handle. Buffy doesn't know when this was, but at least he's armed.
Buffy slowly made her way forward towards the source of the sound.
More groans echoed through the darkness. They seemingly came from every direction.
Xander spun around, then back. "Uh...I think there is no safe direction."
As if to confirm Xander's suspicions, a dark figure suddenly emerged from a shadowy opening in the left wall. Thankfully, the figure shambled slowly or else it would have gotten a hand on Xander.
"Eep!" Xander squeaked. He quickly backed away. Buffy moved to block it.
The slayer recognized the crewman's jacket, but as her flashlight moved up the approaching figure's form, she discovered a pink bubbly mass where the crewman's head should have been. The mass wasn't nearly as thick as the last one they encountered, but the result was the same: the crewmen mindlessly shambled towards them, its arms outstretched and looking for...kisses, apparently.
Xander pointed his broom handle. "Stay back! I do not kiss on the first date! Buffy, don't forget these are just regular guys. We have to subdue them somehow."

Buffy drops the duffle-bag, and still holding the flashlight in her right hand, grabs the bubble monster by his left arm with her own left hand and spins him around with a hard yank so his back is now facing Buffy. She pushes him up face-first against the nearest wall, and puts her foot on his rump to pin him there. Buffy says, “Xander, are you able to cut me a piece of rope?”

Buffy dropped the duffel bag, then grabbed the goo monster by the arm and gave it a good spin before shoving it into a wall. Does she succeed?
--
These monsters have absolutely no concept of defense, so Buffy is getting a +1 bonus on all of her rolls. As for spinning the monster around and pinning it, I roll 1d3. I roll a 1. A +1 bonus turns it into a 2. Buffy has the Slayer Training Defining Trait and she has Super Strength, which gives her two bonus factors when attempting to wrestle or grapple a target. She easily succeeds.
**DEFINING TRAITS: Now we're getting to the meat and potatoes of the 33 rules. Winning bonus factors on twos by attacking people from behind or bribing them are all well and good, but the majority of bonus factors are the result of SKILL and RAW TALENT. These "defining traits" are essentially what makes a person special. Defining Traits are generally chosen when creating a character and you earn more as a character levels up and gains experience. You also gain HP! **Buffy now has a reference sheet! Check it out on the very first page of this game. Character reference sheet are ALWAYS posted in the first post of a game.
"Rope! Got it!" Xander said. He froze before he could reach for the bag. "Buffy, watch out!"
Buffy turned her head just in time to see another goo covered crewman lunge out of the darkness. She has ample opportunity to DODGE this creature, but if she does, she loses her grip on the crewmen she already has.
-- **THE DODGE TRAIT: Buffy has the DODGE Trait! Not all Traits are about bonuses. Some allow you to do special things. Dodge gives you a chance to evade any attack on a successful roll of 3. There are a number of special rules surrounding the Dodge trait, like you can't evade an attack you have no idea is coming, but I'll get into that later.

(I haven't given you the rules yet, but I was just about to send the to you in an email. Don't worry, most of it is just lists, and you'll pick up most of it in time)
*Sent. If you get tired of tutorials you can now just jump into it.
Buffy released the monster she had pinned against the wall, then jumped backwards to evade the lunging monster. The two bumped into each other.
Xander let out a sudden yelp. Buffy glanced over her shoulder to see a THIRD gooey crewman had appeared behind Xander. Xander ramped the butt of the broom handle into the crewman's chest to keep him back, but the creature struggled against the shaft. It stupidly kept trying to grab Xander instead of grabbing at the shaft. Still, Xander was pushed back far enough to bump into Buffy.
"These guys are strong! Kind of like zombies," Xander remarked.
There are two pink guys in front of Buffy, one of which has its back to Buffy while the other is actively lunging at her. A third is being fought off by Xander.

Buffy takes a step forward and does a leg sweep aimed mostly at the goo crewman who is lunging at her, but she hopes to also hit the one with it's back to her as well.

(Nice use of the sweep. Glad to see I won't have to pull my punches with regards to combat in the future)
Buffy dropped and swept, throwing the foremost bubble monster off its feet; however, in what direction does it fall?
**Some rolls just come down to pure dumb luck and don't fit easily into any specific classification of skill or talent. The better the roll, the luckier the result. I roll a 3. Ooh! Good luck!
Buffy is of kind short, so her sweep doesn't quite reach the other guy, but that doesn't matter. When she tripped the first crewman, he fell into his friend sending both tumbling to the ground!
Xander suddenly bumps into Buffy. The crewman on him has forced him backwards.
"Little help here, Buff!" Xander cried out.

"I've got him," Buffs says to Xander as she gets between him and the goo crewman, nudging him out of the way. Then Buffy grabs one of the crewman's arms and performs a "judo flip", rolling the creature over her back and onto the floor in front of her. "Eeeeww, gross," she says as she touches the goo on the back of her head, "it's in my hair!"

Buffy grabs the offending crewman by the arm, then pushes Xander away. She then completes the move, again these things are making no effort to evade her and she has super strength so I'm not going to roll it, flipping the bubbly over her shoulder. And since this is just opposite the other two, the thrown crewman lands atop the other two crewmen!
Xander pulls out the bottle of soap and sprays the dog pile of pink bubble dudes. "Let's see if I can get any of this off...oh, crap! Watch out, Buffy!"
Buffy looks up to see yet another goo guy emerging from the shadows behind the dog pile. Hearing a groan from behind her, Buffy looks over her shoulder to see yet another goober emerging from behind the guy she just flipped.
Xander suddenly did a fist pump. "Yes! Mom was right. Soap really is the best weapon against scum. Buffy! This stuff isn't as thick on these days as it was on Shawn, so it's coming off much more easily. If you can keep them busy, I might be able to wash it off." Xander threw the broomstick away. "I need a wash cloth." He reached for the duffel bag.

(Oh man, we could have been playing Dead Space 4.....)
Buffy says, "Sure, I can keep them busy..........but if the water bottle is taking too long I was going to suggest you check the ceiling for either a sprinkler system or a water pipe around here........." Then Buffy grabs the crewman which came up behind her and flips him over her back and onto the floor in front of her.

Xander snapped his finger. "Now, you see, that's why you're the slayer. I'm going to look for something, you keep them busy." He ran off.
Buffy spun around to address the crewman attacking her from behind. It lunged at Buffy, but the slayer neatly grabbed the crewman by the hand, twisted his elbow and then threw him to the ground.
And just for fun, she threw him into the pile of goo monsters piling up behind her. This resulted knocking them down again before they could climb to their feet.
The second crewman coming at Buffy from the pile f gooeys tripped over the freshly thrown monster and fell into Buffy, but the cheerleader neatly backflipped away from it before it could land on her and get goo in her face (DODGE Success!). Buffy could backflip kick the monster here, but I haven't decided on just how advanced her martial arts prowess is.
As if on queue, another slimed crewman appears, this time from the opposite direction they entered (I know the directions are getting confusing, but you've managed to corral all of the crewman into a single pile of bodies, so doing a map now doesn't seem worthwhile).
**DRAMATIC LICENSE: You know what's boring? The monster attacks. It misses. The hero counters. He hits for 1 HP damage. I prefer to jazz it up a bit (more like a lot). This may result in actions that make the heroes appear more capable than they really (for example, like describing a hero bodyslamming a monster even though the action didn't involve any kind of tackle or charging maneuver). This can be confusing especially if you get a false impression of a hero's abilities, so be sure to ask any questions if you're confused. On that note, asking questions is just good advice in general.

(Oh man, I forgot I could play Fall Guys on the Switch.....that's awesome.......and plus I've started to day-dream about playing the new Metroid game....lol....)
Buffy rushes over to the crewman who just appeared, and performs a flip (the kind where Buffy grabs an arm, rolls backward onto the floor, and kicks the crewman over herself with her leg) and she aims him so that he lands in the pile of crewman. Then she runs over to the rope (which I think is still in the duffle bag, right?)................

Buffy runs over to the new arrival and grabs him, DODGES another lunge from the monster, and kick-flips the crewman to the ground. This one has a chance to hit the other bubbly crewman that appeared, but this time she is not so lucky (rolled a 2) and instead lands at its feet.
The last standing crewman stands between Buffy and the duffel bag, but it won't be the last standing crewman for long: the others are starting to work their way out of the dog pile. Just for simplicity's sake, I'll have Buffy drop the final crewman by luring it into lunging at her, thus tripping over its buddy on the ground (sometimes when I'm just one action away from finishing up a fight, I don't see much point in delaying just to get it done when I can move on). She runs over to the bag and grabs the rope.
What does she do with the rope?
**PAST AND PRESENT TENSE: I know. I tend to switch between past and present tense, but present tense is WAY more fluid for describing combat whereas past is for storytelling. Hey, I ain't shooting for a Pulitzer here.

Okay, I have a question: So the walls are just all brick, right? Is there anything sticking out anywhere, like a stray screw or nail?.....I know I'm in a room - does it have a door (with a knob) by any chance?
|

Post by TG Barighm on Jul 17, 2022 18:34:55 GMT -5
Brick, yes. No door nearby, but there are plenty of pipes sticking out here and there.

|
Post by samus on Jul 18, 2022 7:15:29 GMT -5
(this might not work but Buffy's going to try anyways.......)
Buffy ties the rope to a nearby pipe sticking out and she then runs around the edges of the room in an attempt to get the rope around as many crewmen as she can (who are still mostly in the middle of the room). When she completes one lap she tightens the rope on the ones who are caught and says, "You want to hug and kiss, you can hug and kiss each other..."

You're right. Normally that wouldn't work.
But this is Buffy, and on Buffy, there is room for a certain degree of ridiculousness, so Buffy tied the rope (that's a roll, btw; thankfully, she rolled a 3), then wrapped it around the bubble men. By this point, all of them had climbed to their feet, so it was just a matter of corralling them into a single group in which she could wrap them up. Upon getting them all coiled up, she tightened the rope (again, easy when you've got Super Strength) and squished them into one big mass of pink cotton candy men.
It was at that moment a streams of water began to fall from the ceiling.
"I found the sprinkler system!" Xander called as he reappeared. He drew his soap bottle. "Now let's dance!"
**IMPOSSIBLE SUCCESSES: It's rare, but there are some things where rolling a 3 is not enough. I know, I know, the rule of thumb is roll a 3 for success, but imagine programming a computer without a lick of training, or performing brain surgery without having any idea of what you're doing. I don't care how lucky you are, you're not going to succeed. This is generally true of most KNOWLEDGE Traits.
****KNOWLEDGES: So, my players didn't like the idea of spending Defining Traits on boring things like educational skills or new languages. Although being a doctor or engineer certainly counts as Defining Traits, I guess being smart isn't as important as having more HP or being able to kill things faster, heh. Anyway, Knowledges cover all of those pesky little educational things. Baking, Rope tying, survival skills...if it's purely a matter of what you know, it's a Knowledge. Knowledges are tracked entirely separately and are generally purchased with money, although you might start with more if you're a scholarly type or take the SMART Defining Trait.

Xander grinned stupidly as he sprayed the crewman with soap. Buffy stepped in any time one of the goo guys threatened to break free of the rope. Between the spraying water and the soap, the goo washed off much quicker than last time.
"Gwah! Urr! Awah! Argh! Ahh!" the men shouted and groaned. Soon they began to curse. "What the...? The hell is going on? What is this?"
"Uh...you guys regained your minds much quicker than last time," Xander said nervously.
"What the hell is going? Why are we tied up?"
"You...got sprayed by sewage! And...um..."
"We always get sprayed by sewage. It's the job!"
Xander chuckled nervously. "Yeah, realizing that excuse won't work this time. Buffy?"

"Uhhh," Buffy says, "Well, the front basement door had been left open a crack and a raccoon that looked like it had rabies got inside......My friend and I followed it in here and were trying to catch it when you all wandered into the trap..........On second though, I think I'll call Animal Control to deal with it. You all better get out of here unless you want to catch rabies. I hear that the first signs of the disease are loss of memory, feeling groggy and disoriented, having the urge to hug and kiss people........."

The tied up men stared.
"Rabies doesn't work like that," said one.
"I don't know, Rich. I had an awfully weird feeling a moment ago," said another.
"I've never heard of rabies doing that."
"Yeah, but...we're all hugging right now..."
"Isn't that because of her?"
The men exchanged nervous looks.
"Maybe we should get checked out."
"Okay, fine. Cut this rope already!"
"Yes, sir!" Xander said.

MEANWHILE...
Willow had returned to her place in the library, books open and coffee at the ready, the clothes clamp on her nose. She ran her fingers studiously across the ancient pages while another finger ran across a modern translation. She sighed.
"What? They have no room for cotton candy monsters in hell?" she muttered. She sipped her coffee.
At that moment the doors to the library burst open and in walked Giles.
"Right. The young man is receiving the proper medical attention. Now on to more important matters." Giles rubbed his hands.
Willow stared mid-sip.
Giles crossed his arms. "Of course they went into the basement without me."
"Uh...these men came...in rubber jackets...with big sewer trucks," Willow explained aided by gestures of the mug.
"That can't be right. It is much too early!" Giles hustled to his office. "Where is my supply bag?"
"They took it with them," Willow answered. "If you had left the radio, I could have kept tabs on them."
"They didn't take the..." Giles paused. He pulled the radio out of his pocket. "Yes, well, what matters is that I assist the slayer before more men are infected. The doctors at the hospital thought it to be a simple bacterial infection. Of course I tried to offer my advice, but no, the forces of evil can be held at bay by a simple round of antibiotics." He thought for a moment. "Although in this case it did. Still, doctors should be a little more open to alternative..."
Willow didn't hear any of this rant. A certain word had caught her attention. She immediately ran to the stacks, a certain book in her mind.

(Yeah, sorry, there was supposed to be more, but I was too busy during the day to get back to it, and by night I was too tired to think straight)
"I hope you enjoy the rest of the day, and forget our faces," Xander said.
"What? How? It's dark down here and your flashlight is in our eyes," one of the crewmen reply.
"We never got your name, son."
"Uh...good." And with that, Buffy and Xander ran out of the tunnels. Outside, Buffy suggestED they return to the library, so they did that.
SUNNYDALE LIBRARY
Just as Buffy and Xander were about to throw open the doors to the library, the doors opened for them...
...to reveal Giles doing the exact same thing.
"Buffy! Xander!" He frowned. "I told you not to go down there without me."
Xander slapped Giles' shoulder. "And it's a good thing we didn't listen, big buy, because we just saved a hand full of good men from a pink fate." He walked over to the table. "Not only that, but we confirmed cleaning the goo is the best way to help someone. A good cleaner and a strong jet of water and Bob is not your creepy uncle trying to give you awkward hugs and kisses."
Just as Xander reached the table, he slipped on the goo that still littered the ground. His nose wrinkled up as he was reminded of the lurking smell. "Um...someone should clean that up." He dropped onto a chair.
Giles adjusted his glasses. "Yes, well...uh...good. Very good. I trust you two were discreet; however, we are still no closer to discovering the origin of this infectious substance. Did you find any leads?"

"Poop1" Willow suddenly exclaimed exuberantly. She popped up from her place in the stacks with a book in her hand. "It's poop!"
Xander nodded slowly. "Yes, Willow. We've established it smells awful and comes out of the sewer pipes."
"No! No-no-no-no!" Willow repeatedly excitedly as she raced down the steps and up to the group. She had an opened book in her hand. She began reading aloud with her finger tracing the text on the page. "There are many varieties of demons. All are interested in corrupting the sons of god, but few actually can actually do so without resorting to standard means such as corrupting influences. Actual supernatural and magical means to force corruption is limited to only a hand full of demon families...blah blah blah..." She stabbed a point on the page with her finger. "Only two kinds of these demons can enter our world without invitation, one of which is generally harmless while the other can pass as human. This creature is no less corrupting in human form because its corrupting influences can spread without the use of magic. Such influences include, but are not limited to, touch, aromas, staring into its eyes, and coming into contact with various bodily excretions such as mucus, saliva, sweat, and fecal excrement." She grinned triumphantly. "Poop!"
Giles' face twisted in disgust. "Oh, god almighty..."
Horror washed over Xander's face, but then it slowly morphed binto a goofy grin. "Poop zombies!"
