FF15's release date was finally announced, along with a crapload of extra fluff like an anime and a movie to go with it.
So...yeah.

I don't know why, but I'm struggling to muster any excitement for another FF. Once I finished the last one, I didn't replay it as much of any of the previous ones.

I don't think anyone did. I downright loathed FF13. And FF14 was just too MMO'ish which sounds funny but a lot of people promised me the story was great (if it was, I didn't see it). The Old Republic and Guild Wars 2 do a terrific job of providing meaningful singleplayer content, so I figured FF14 could do the same.

Now wait a sec, what about older FF games? Not liking FF13 is practically the default opinion at this point, but what about the golden era FF's?

I loved the old ones. The ones we got over here anyway. I agree with the popular opinion that 6 was probably the best, but 7 is still my favourite.

Well, you'd be welcome around here, then. My sister never moved beyond the SNES because of six. Technically, it has some faults, but I still enjoy it more than 7. FF7 is still one of the best, of course.
A lot of people think I'm crazy to like the very first FF as my next favourite though, heh.

Movie comes out for rent in a few weeks. It's next to impossible to find it in any theater. Heard it's terrible, but apparently there is a long gap between FF15's early chapters and the rest of the game in the tune of 10 years or so, so you need the movie and anime to fill in the gap.
I'd much rather not encourage this milking behaviour, but Spirits Within looked incredible at the time, so I'm curious to see what advances they've made since then.

That sort of thing really annoys me. When I buy a game, I expect a complete experience.

Full agreement there. It's hard to have any interest in any game's lore because it's no longer contained to the games. I barely have time to game as is. I don't have time to read all the comics, books, animes, and movies that go along with it.

Well let's hope they don't make a Theme Park full of the mascots.

Er...well, not a full theme park, but they have created a few rides dedicated to them at a few parks in Asia.

So the general consensus is that World of Final Fantasy, while being full of fluff and cheesy fanservice, at its core is actually a very good traditional RPG. Better than most recent FF games, actually.

I have not been keeping up with FF news. What is this game?

I told you: a cheesy fanservice game full of references to previous FF games with cutesy graphics. It's more along the lines of FFX-2; however, a lot of people seem to like it because it's actually a pretty good turned-based JPRG. You're not going to get anything out of the story, but the core gameplay is solid.

Well, I finally got to play World of Final Fantasy. It's exactly as advertised: the story is so cutesy and "Japanese", if that makes sense to you, that it's borderline irritating; however, the core gameplay is actually quite good. I actually have to agree. As an FF GAME, it's arguably the best FF we've gotten since 10.

Oh, man. FF15 plays SO MUCH MORE like a Devil May Cry or Bayonetta deal. Good lord, why can't we just get a proper FF game? I miss those.

They always like to change things up each installment. Making it like DMC might be a step too far.

People keep saying that, but I don't know why they think a slight change here and there is some great big thing. There wasn't any truly significant change until FF10, and that was still turn-based combat. Then there were the MMOs, but again, still an RPG. Even FF13, for all of its eccentricities, was a turn-based RPG.
FF15 is a completely different genre entirely, and a lot of people complaining it's more like Inquisition: a great big world to explore with nothing in it, not really, save a lot of fetch quests and a battle system that essentially involves whack, whack, dodge, whack. It's not even finished. The game is getting more content patched in...and you have to buy the online co-op.
Well, on the bright side, Matsuda already promised to make changes to Square's development approach in the future. It was too late for FF15 because it was halfway through production when he said it. FF16 will be the real test.

Did you hear about this 30 Anniversary stuff? Releasing the first 9 games on a single disc, originals plus new versions, FF13 Trilogy, and a bunch of other news?

A recent interview from Nomura states FF7R will be more "realistic" in many ways, and that the gun wielding characters will be more exclusively gun users. There will also be cover mechanics and some stealth elements.
That doesn't make me feel better, but the first gameplay videos sure looked turn-based.

Just got FF15. Feels like a button mashy action game so far. After playing much better similar type games, FF15 just feels clunky.

"Wanted" ads for FF7R have released and Squeenix is calling on people who are interested in "recreating a classic experience by making it new again" or some such propaganda bull to justify how their goal is to change everything about the game. Nomura never liked old school RPGs.

Turns out that weird theory that FF7R is not actually a retelling of the original story, but an "alternative timeline", more like a SEQUEL story, has proven to be true.

So it turns out FF14 can now be played completely free with no time limit. When I first heard about the change, I thought it just meant you COULD play through the base content...if you were crazy enough to play that long during the limited trial.
But there is actually no time limit. You are actually free to play through the entire campaign and its sidequests up through the first expansion, no sub required. You are still limited, like being unable to use the auction house or create parties or form guilds, but for the most part, you can take part in all of the core vanilla content. The only thing you're blocked from is the newest expansions, market quests, and top raid content...which means nothing to me.
That said, there is one stupid rule where if you've ever bought the game you can't use the free trial. You still need to sub, which means it's better to start a brand new account, so my PS4 is out. I'd have to play on my PC...which really isn't a bad thing.
I dunno. I have more than enough games that I don't need an MMO, and I've got the time these days, but still...that's quite a bit of value. That said, Guild Wars 2 is completely free aside from the base purchase and that didn't hold my attention for very long (and it was a VERY good game), the Old Republic also has a great system where just buying SOMETHING, even just $5, unlocks much of the game and I can't bring myself to start playing it after all these years, and WoW...well, okay, Blizz just pissed me off so I don't care about them.

Lots of FF7 news:
-New PS5 edition and new story DLC starring Yuffie is coming.
-New Remake coming. Yes, ANOTHER remake, but this one is a faithful remake that is pretty much just the original game with updated graphics and what appears to be some changes to the combat system.
-There are also remakes of the franchise's spin-offs coming, like Crisis Core. These will be reimagined as traditional RPGs and play like FF7 and included in a single package known as "Ever Crisis". This is much closer to what fans have been asking for.
-They're also doing a third person battle royale game, but nobody cares about that.

The third person battle royale game now appears to be a mobile F2P title, which means it's shit.
Shame. A competitive shooter ARPG might have been fun, but if they're not even going to release a console version...
