The party continues through the field. The worgs never attack.
They continue through the field and begin to approach the edge of the forest again. The land is beginning to dip into a small valley between the forest and the rise where the camp is situated. The wind is picking up a little, so it's not too difficult for Armas and Cealia to pick up a strange smell.
"Eck...that's awful," Armas scrunches up his nose.
Cealia doesn't just smell it, she spots its source. Sitting in the grass about 100 ft. away is an ogre. It appears to be gnawing on something.
"Really?" Armas hefts the longsword. "Nobody likes ogres. They're a pain. If it comes near us, and it will, we will take it out."
There is a lot of room to go around the ogre, but it could just as easily spot the party no matter where they go. It's really up to the ogre to determine whether a fight is in order or not. cealia Veteran Raider ***

The party attempt to give the ogre a wide berth as they move around it, but as expected, the ogre has little trouble spotting the party. It jumps to its feet and points at Cealia's horse, then gives a yell that sounds vaguely like "Big meaty!". It then picks up a large rock and heaves it at the group. It's way off.
"I thought so," Armas draws his shortsword and wields it in his off-hand. "The empire could always use less ogres. I'm going in."
Armas begins to sprint towards the ogre. The rest of the group remain about 100 ft. away from it.

Armas and Cealia, on her horse, quickly close in on the ogre as it hefts another rock and whips it at the charging swordsman. It's way off again. Cealia eventually outpaces Kara, so she waits for the ninja to stop. She eventually does and begins to draw her various throwing weapons. Xelander also catches up and he draws his crossbow. He doesn't have a bolt ready, so he has to load one up. Eventually Eadbad passes the backline group as he huffs and puffs his way to the frontline.
Armas darts in with a lightning quick slash of his sword to the ogre's right leg. The ogre tries to nail him with another thrown rock, but it misses yet again. Armas, on the other hand, lands a grievous blow with the longsword (-12 HP) and easily severs an artery in the ogre's leg. The ogre howls as it tries to back away. It begins to claw at a log lying on the ground.
Xelander and Kara begin their ranged onslaught. Both hit, but neither strikes have much penetration (-6 HP in total). Eadbald jumps into the action with a straight charge to the ogre's other leg and deals his own brand of grievous damage (-10 HP).
That was quick. In only 6 seconds the ogre's legs have transformed into blood fountains. It collapses to its knees, but it does not seem to be done for just yet. Instead it raises its hands to Armas and Eadbald and begins to make a series of grunts and throaty gurgles. Eventually the grunts change into a coughing noise, and a single clearly audible plea of "Mercy!" is shouted at the party.
Eadbald catches Armas easing his sword arm into a low, thrusting position. The swordsman is clearly considering a finishing blow to the ogre's throat.

Cealia heals up enough of the ogre's wounds to stop the bleeding. It slowly regains consciousness and struggles to its feet, but Armas suddenly trips the ogre and sends it crashing to the ground again. He levels his sword at the creature's face.
"Be gone, ogre. Never trouble the empire again. Consider that your payment for sparing your life," Armas says in a commanding voice.
The ogre stares at Armas for a second, then begins to back away. It eventually gets back to its feet, turns, and hobbles away as quickly as it can.
Armas turns back to the party. "Let us continue."
The party continue to follow the animal trail through the grassy field as it begins to dip into the valley. They soon leave the field and re-enter the forest, and it's not long before they find themselves standing by a brook. Armas bends down to wash the ogre's blood from his hands and face, then examines the scene.
The mountains are beginning to gain prominence over the landscape, so it's not possible to head north. The party can continue to head east, but there are a number of sharp rises and hills in the forest. The terrain will be very difficult. The party could follow the brook south for a bit until they find an easier eastern path to navigate, but it's not certain how far south they have to travel until they find one. "Suit yourself," Armas says as he begins to make his way towards the first slope. Cealia dismounts from her horse and follows while Xelander, Kara, and Eadbald form the rear.
There is evidence a landslide of some sort ocurred here at some point in the past. There are numerous boulders and rocks laying about, none of which are sunken into the ground. The ground itself is heavily pitted, and it immediately becomes very steep shortly after the brook fades out of sight. A number of trees lean in unusual directions, and a few logs sit in the worst possible places, notably those that would make the climb much easier.
Cealia has absolutely no difficulty whatsoever traversing this terrain. Armas also manages the climb without slipping for tripping. Cealia's horse doesn't fare as well as it trips, slips, and nearly falls numerous times. It steps into a deep hole at one point and nearly twists its ankle (-4 NL), and it slips and falls into a sharp twig at another point (-3 HP). The sturdy Eadbald manages to avoid making a fool of himself, and Xelander won't be dirtying up his clothes on this day. Kara, unfortunately, trips and falls a good ways down the slope before she can recover herself (-5 NL, -2 HP).
Roughly halfway up the deep slope, the party comes across a slight ridge. It's almost a near vertical rise of earth, and the party has to use exposed tree roots to pull themselves over it. Again, Armas and Cealia don't seem to have any difficulty overcoming this obstacle, nor does the dwarf struggle in any way. Xelander has a few scary moments, but everyone else manages to get over the hump.
Not so for Cealia's horse.
The party had to get creative to overcome this challenge. They end up tying some rope to the horse's bit and bridle and try pulling the horse up the slope, but despite her efforts, Cealia simply can't get her horse to co-operate. It eventually gives up trying to climb and returns to the more flatter area near the brook.
"Let's just move on," Armas says as he watches the horse carefully make its way back down the slope. "I'm sure the horse will be fine for a little while. It might even find its own way to the camp."
Does Cealia agree or will she find another way for her horse to reach the shaman's camp?

Cealia shoves Armas. He doesn't budge an inch and he seems slightly amused the catfolk would bother trying to physically upset the swordsman.
Cealia eventually marches east and well ahead of the party. Not even Armas can keep up. They eventually exit the forest again and find themselves looking upon the tiny camp.

Roughly 100 ft. from the camp, in a tall section of grass just beyond the reaches of the final trees, Armas stops and hands a rolled parchment to the party.
"That is the emperor's orders. Give it to him. He should be able to figure out what to do," Armas explains. He then hands the longsword to Eadbald. "I like that sword. You sure you won't give it up for 300g? This is your last chance."
Once the party is organized, Armas gives the party a deep bow. "This is where we part. I have work to do back west. I wish you good luck, but you probably won't need it. There is little to fear this deep within the empire, except maybe the odd beast."
And with that, the swordsman sprints back into the forest and disappears from sight. With little else to go on, the party approaches the camp of the mysterious shaman.
A man does, indeed, sit by the campfire next to his little wooden hut. He appears to be a younger man, just barely out of his teens, and he's dressed in a tattered shirt and breeches covered in leather patches. His dark hair is long, unkept, and wispy; he's also pretty short and somewhat scrawny. If it weren't for the leather boots, belt, bow, and spear at his side, one could easily mistake the shaman for a bum. It is obvious the man has been watching the party ever since they exited the forest, and as they approach, he rises to his feet and stares at them.
"What is a girl, a catfolk druid, a dwarf, and a wealthy-looking halfling doing out here in the middle of nowhere?" the man asks in a genuinely curious tone. "Are you lost? You came out here to hunt some creature for its pelt, right? Well, don't ask me for help. I only take what I need. I have little care for selfish materialism."
The party gives the man a confused look and he eventually looks back with an equally confused look of his own. "Wait...no. There is no way you could be looking for me. That's just ridiculous. Nobody is looking for me."
The party hands the man the sealed parchment. The man unrolls the paper, breaks the seal, and begins to read. His puzzled look eventually melts away into shock, then changes into something more sour.
"The emperor...wants...my help?" the man sounds angry. "MY help? After banishing me for my beliefs...all of a sudden, I'm valuable? And no mention of retracting his decree for my service! I'm given an order and expected to serve. Nevermind tossing me out on the streets with nothing but the clothes on my back, just shut up and serve. Thunder and lightning, that pisses me off!"
The party watches the man rant in puzzlement. After awhile, he eventually notices them watching him and calms down.
"Look, I used to be an up and coming scholar for the church, but instead of being a good little boy, I decided to grow a brain and look into other avenues of the divine. I discover an interesting body of research around the spirits of the dead and become fascinated, but heaven forbid, that's necromancy! Spirits!" the man throws up his hands. "Everyone has a soul. That's all it was! I'm not a bloody grave robber, nor do I particularly care for rotting flesh. Alas, I'm thrown at the emperor's feet and told to beg for forgiveness, and then he goes into a temper tantrum when I refuse to do personal 'favours' for him, whatever the hell that is. Well, good riddance to all of that. I've learned far more about the spirit world than I ever could in the city."
The man nods in the party's direction. "So, yeah, I guess you can call me a 'shaman', but I prefer you call me Kay. That's my name. Now, it is beginning to get dark. Let's gather around the fire and talk about what's going on, shall we? I'm sure you have a lot of questions for me."
And yes, Cealia's horse manages to find his way to the campfire my himself.

If it is used long enough, it is utterly destroyed," Kay gives a dismissive wave. "The power of gods, that is. As a side effect, being able to control the souls of others allows you to empower your own, and the ultimate award is immortality. And that's why I say it's a myth. After a few moments of silence, he sighs. "Ah...I see. You guys don't know the way to Kara'Conakor, do you? All right. I'm sure I can do the empire this one little favour," Kay announces as he rises to his feet. "You can rest here tonight. We'll set out tomorrow." KAY JOINED THE PARTY! *Special note about Kay: Unlike Armas, Kay is very much a PC like the rest of you and is equivalent in power. Take care of him and he'll take care of you. Kay is a spirit shaman. It's basically the same as a druid, except with a lot more raw magical punch. In other words, Kay is a more real character than Armas is. Armas is more of a plot set-piece. * * * * * As promised, Kay begins to lead the party to Kara'Conakor. This involves returning to the main road, a journey much easier than the one the party went on to find the shaman due to his familiarity with the forest. They follow the road for a day, then turn north at an intersection. After another few days of travel, the party find themselves approaching a large town built on top and around a hill in the middle of the Greatwood. Sitting directly on top of the hill is a massive tower, easily 10 stories tall, and a keep sits next to the tower. A stone wall surrounds the town, but it is pitted and poorly maintained. "Castle Iatsargo, a formidable fortress originally occupied by the royal Iatsargo family. It is now the home of the Imperial Sky Legion," Kay begins to explain. "It was one of the first kingdoms conquered by the empire some...oh, about a century ago. Old king Iatsargo was a young man at the time and he made many attempts to subtly recapture his kingdom. Poor man, he died before he could accomplish his dream. His son, now the current puppet-ruler of the town, has little care for the empire or the castle. He is allowing his town to rot from the inside, but hey, it's his family's own fault. When the empire invaded the town, Iatsargo fired his weapons on its residents. In the end, the townspeople led the empire to the castle's hidden tunnels, and it became the first of many nations captured by the first emperor." Kay motions to the wall's gates. Drab and leaning, the gates aren't in any better repair than the wall. There are only a handfull of guards at the gate and they seem disinterested with anything going on around them. They pay little attention to the many carriages and carts that pass by them. "Pitiful, isn't it? A lot of merchants do business here. You'd think there would be more than enough money to repair this," Kay looks up just in time to see a pair of flying beasts, a griffon and a sky drake, a smaller, more agreeable type of dragon, pass over the party and approach the castle tower. They set down on the top of it. "I think that's Sky Commander Harios' drake. Hmm...funny, normally he cares more about this kind of thing." Kay suddenly shakes his head. "Look, Kara'Conakor is still pretty far to the north. The town is deep in the mountains, so we're going to need some cold weather and climbing gear. You might also want to consider rearming or repairing whatever you need. This is the wealthiest town you'll visit for some time." Just as the party is about to part ways, a pair of what appears to be city guards approach the party, or more specifically, Xelander. *Take it away, Dremmy. **Despite what happens next, the party is still free to shop as they choose. They’re not the best dressed guards you expect to see in a large town such as Iatsargo, but they seem to look as if they can get the job done. Mostly. “Ay.”, one of the guards say as he points to the Halfling, “Don’t I know you from somewhere? You look familiar.” Xelander blinks a few times before responding, “Nope. Don’t know me at all.” The other guard gets a closer look at Xelander. “Yeah, you do look familiar. I just cant put my finger on who you look like.” “No, no. Me and my friends are just passing through.” Xelander nudges the group along as he says through his teeth in a hushed voice, “Just keep walking.” “Wait a minute. Let’s get a second opinion.” The guard calls over the 5 other gate guards and soon the group is surrounded by half sleep, lazy, and befuddled men trying to figure out who the Halfling is. “It’s the mayor’s son.”, says one guard. “He looks like a performer I once say in theater. He was quite good.”, says another. “It’s the mayor’s son.”, the guards says again. “Are you that kid what set old man Crutchet’s house on fire last week?”, says yet another guard “It’s the mayor’s son.”, the guard says once more without a change in his voice. “I know who he is! “It’s the mayor’s son!”, says the guard that first meet the group earlier. All the guards respond in the affirmative. “I said that already” is heard within the group of guards. “Aren’t we supposed to bring him in?” The guards look at each other for a second before one says, “I think so. If I remember correctly, there is a reward for anyone bringing the son of the mayor back to the city.” The guards nod their heads yes as they all recall that piece of information from their memory. The guards stand there for a minute before one of the guards begin to realize that there is a reward attached to bringing Xelander in. “Well what are we standing here for?” One of the guards points his weapon at Xelander. “You and your friends have to come with us so that I can claim my reward.” “You claim the reward? Not if I can claim it first!” says another guard “Hey! I say him first!” yells the first guard. “I’m the one who identified him.”, says another guard in a calm, monotone voice Soon, the group is ushered into the city towards the Mayor’s office. Castle Iatsargo isn’t much to look at outside the castle walls. Once you get past the double walls things begin to look very different. The peasants’ area is pretty much your average peasant community. Most of the business comes from here. The trade and manufacturing districts are the first things people come to when they enter the town. Some of the shops here sell your basic items and a few rarities. Farther in, you can almost draw a line between the poor and the rich. The rich make up a small part of the inner castle. The area only has but a couple dozen high priced homes. The group passes a few inns and shops that sell high end merchandise here. They also pass a nice looking church where a crowd is gathered before they are escorted into the Mayor’s office. They are ushered into a large lounge area filled with a few tables, a couple of couches line the wall, a library of books on various subjects litter the book shelves, and some very interesting miniature statues sit atop various pedestals. “The Mayor shall be in shortly. You are to wait here until he arrives.” The guards shut the door behind them leaving them alone in the spacious room. “Heh. Well. Will you look at that?” Xelander says. “We, uh, seem to be trapped.” He laughs nervously as he says, “I don’t guess you’d believe me if I told you that I’ve never been here before, would you?” Last Edit: Jul 5, 2007 at 11:53am by Dremmy "I thought I was going to come out first," she thinks. He doesn’t look too happy at the moment. “Dad.” Xelander begins, “ Let me explain. See there was this…” “What in the WORLD is wrong with you, boy!” The Mayor stomps from the door to a table at the back of the room. I had half of the town guardship looking all over for you!” “Which was, what, the two drunks that drink up all the ale? Really, when was the last time the guards in this town actually DID anything useful besides hold up the castle gate?” says Xelander as he begins to try and outtalk his father. “Well, we cant have everyone out looking for you, now can I? I’ve a town to run.” The Mayor takes a gulp of his drink as he continues. “What, may I ask, were you doing outside the castle gates anyway? You know what I told you about the outside world. They are not to be trusted until they cross that gate and enter out land. That way we have them where we want them.” The Mayor now realizes that there are others in the room other than his son. “Who are these… people….you brought with you? They come here to help you steal something else?” “You leave them out of this. They had nothing to do with what did or did not do.” “No need to deny it anymore, Farnsworth. We know you stole the town key. Tell us where it is, won’t you?” “Stop calling me Farnsworth!” The Mayor sighs as he finished his drink and move closer to the group of adventurers. “My boy. I am only trying to protect you from harm. I can only do that if you are inside the castle walls.” Xelander crosses his arms in frustration. “This town bores me. I do nothing but watch everyone else do stuff. I have no life inside this dungeon of a castle, so I left to have an adventure. Something that I could never get here.” “An adventure!? What nonsense is that!? There is plenty of adventure here in Castle Iatsargo. Why, just last week old man Cruthet’s house caught on fire!” The Mayor looks over the group standing before him. His eyes stop at Kay. He squints his eyes at him as if to figure out whether or not he recognizes him. He paces the floor a bit. “Leaving the Castle is dangerous. Stealing from the town government is dangerous. Gallivanting with outsiders is dangerous.” “You have no idea what it’s like to be stuck in here with nothing to look forward to! At least outside there is something new going on all the time. The people are different. They actually WANT to make life interesting.” “They also want to take advantage of you. How did you come to be with these people? “, the Mayor says wiggling his finger at the group. “No doubt they saw that you were from an upscale background and tagged along just to see where you lived. Then they wait for the right opportunity to rob you, come here, and pillage our fair town. Worse of all, you brought a two species into our town you know you can’t trust, the dwarf and the catfolk!” The Mayor looks over at Kara. “Is that a ninja? Did you bring a ninja here?” “Dad. “Oh! Now we have to double out guard duty at the vault.” “Dad….” “Not to mention keep the food locked up.” “DAD!” The Mayor stops. He looks around and finally says, “Well, it’s decided. No one leaves this town until the Key to the Town is returned. Only then will you be able to leave. Farnsworth stays, of course, but the rest of you must leave once we have the item.” He walks past them to the door, turns around and says, “You are all free to stay in the trade district. A room shall be provided to you. Your horse, catfolk, shall be taken care of. You are forbidden to roam the Aristocratic district with the exception of the church. You may learn to mind yourselves if you went there once in a while.” “The name is Xelander.” “Never go by your middle name, my boy. It makes you sound….common.” With that the Mayor leaves the group and the guards escort them to Dusty’s Inn and Blacksmithing. They are given two rooms, 1 for the males and 1 for the females. Each room has 2 beds, so the party will have to work out those accommodations. Under the Mayor’s orders, the food at the Inn (and only the inn) is free. They may buy whatever they want in the trade district, but must have a guarded escort in the Aristocratic District for anything over 5000g. The sun sets as the town slowly winds down for the night. The shopkeepers begin to gather their things, close up their respective shops, and head home. The night watchmen take their position in the towers as the guards switch shifts at the gate. The party all gather in the room for the guys at the inn to discuss what happened earlier (after they are done shopping that is).
“Well, by now you know that I am the Mayor’s son.”, Xelander begins. “I guess you can say that I am next in line to be Mayor of this town.”
“I’ve never been outside of the castle walls until recently. It’s such a bore having to sit through class after class on politics and aristocratic behavior. Nuts to that! So I decided to start my own adventures in the town.” Xelander stands up and points out the window to the church. “You see that church? It has always been pretty quiet. You’d get the odd person here or there attend the services, mostly out of towners. About a month ago there has been a crowd gathered there almost every afternoon. I wasn’t sure why so I decided to investigate. The High Priest, Lorridus Mystex, has been giving speeches on the steps of the church, alerting people that the time for change is now. He tells them that he knows the answer to all their problems and that they just need to be patient with him. .
“Something didn’t sound right. If he knew the answer to all of the towns’ problems then he would have told my dad about it. So I snuck into the church to see what was up. It was pretty easy since it’s an old church. There’s a hole that leads to the catacombs underneath it. It’s not very big. There are only 3 chambers to it, really. I made it to the main floor where I overheard Lorridus speaking to a few of his servants about finding a box. He said that whatever was in that box was the means to “rule with unimaginable influence and power”. He couldn’t read all the words on the box, but was able to translate parts of it. He could only make out the words “No Life” and “Formula”. There’s supposed to be a legend about it in a book somewhere in town but I’m not sure where it is. He also said the town key matches the description said in legend to open the box. Naturally I didn’t want him to open the box. Since I knew where the key was I took it to keep it out of his hands. One of his servants caught me with the key so I hid it and I ran away.”

There is a knock on the door. Everyone looks at each other expecting someone else to open the door. A few seconds go by before another; more persistent knock comes to the door. “Um. Come in?” Xelander says when no one else volunteers to answer. The door opens and two gnomes come into the room, dressed in clothes meant for service to the church. Dark red robes with the symbol of a sunset across their chest, the gnomes are hard to tell apart except for the fact that one has a beard that is red and the other blond. The gnome in the red begins to speak. “Good evening. I am Nis. This is my partner Tnemhsinup, but we call him Nem. It’s easier in the tongue.”
“We heard that dear Farnsworth is back.”, the blond gnome known as Nem says. “We are so happy to know that he is safe.”
Xelander gives them stern look but says nothing. “We would like to introduce you all to the High Priest Lorridus Mystex. Jul 12, 2007 at 11:49am Quote like Post Options Post by Dremmy on Jul 12, 2007 at 11:49am “Splendid! Please, come with us.” Nis and Nem lead the way out of the room. They tell the guards that they are taking the party to see the High Priest. The guards are a little apprehensive of letting them go at such a late hour, but allows for it as long as they have an escort. Xelander reluctantly stays behind.
The party goes from the Inn through the Aristocratic district and towards the church. The church is fairly well built after it was renovated a few years ago. Upon entering, the party notices two large round stain glass windows high above them: one facing east and the other facing west. The eastern glass window has the picture of a figure pointing up at the rising sun while the western glass window shows another figure pointing down at the setting sun. There are several rows of pews that fill the main auditorium. A few people here and there occupy them: a few kneeling in prayer, a young woman is reading a book, one old man silently snores away in a corner pew.
The party is lead to a door with a symbol of the setting sun etched on its front. They enter a room with an extensive library, plush leather couches, and some antique tables. To the left of the room is a table littered with what looks to be old artifacts and scrolls. To the right, old books and paintings litter the floor. There is a very prominent painting of a large green dragon befriending a scantily clad female Halfling in a lush green forest. In the back there is a large desk with various things pertaining to note taking and office work spread across it. High above the desk is another round stain glass window depicting the figure of a man with his hands outstretched to the side with the sun behind him as if at midday. Nis and Nem stand at either side of the desk. Behind the desk seats a rather tall man with black hair slightly curled at the ends. He wears a black robe with a red sash draped around his neck that hangs down to the floor. He has the symbol of a full sun on his chest colored in gold. He stands up from his desk as the party stands before him. “Welcome to the Church of Solaras. I am the High Priest, Lorridus Mystex. A pleasure to finally meet you all.” Lorridus bows before the party before continuing. “It has come to my attention that you are the traveling companions of the mayors’ son. He can be quite a handful. He has always had a difficult time fitting in with others.” Brushing his hair back, the party can now tell that the High Priest is an elf. “It pains me to say that he has committed a crime against our town. He has stolen a key from us. It has been a symbol of honor, of virtue, of respect to us for many years. It is the key to every residents heart here in Iatsargo and they wish to have it back. I am sorry that he had to drag you into his affairs and involve you in his crimes. You do have an opportunity to be absolved of all accusations if you were to have the key returned to us. The town would greatly be in your debt.” Last Edit: Jul 12, 2007 at 11:55am by Dremmy "I thought I was going to come out first," she thinks. "Look, if what you are saying is true, then we should probably tell somebody about it. You should talk to your father and we could tell Sky General Harios about it. The emperor's forces will not take kindly to somebody impeding an official imperial mission."
*Sorry for the delay. Kara's ring and necklace is valued at 125gp. While she is at it, she also gets that gem she found valued at 75gp. Kara thinks that's a little low, but the merchants won't budge on the price. The basic artisan's tools required for poisonmaking cost 5gp.

Eadbald looks around before asking his question. "Persuading the brat is a problem you are going to have to deal with yourselves." Lorridus says. Cealia is unable to read the script on the box. She does, however notice a book next to it entitled, "Scripts of the Infernal Language." Eadbald notices it as well.
Suddenly Kay ushers everyone out of the room. As the party returns to the room, Kay informs the party of his thoughts. Kara injects her thought to the group about staying but is only meet with slightly annoyed stares. Xelander shrugs and says, "Going to see dad is worth a shot. Let's go!"
The party, along with thier escort, make thier way to the Mayors office where two guards stand before the office door. "Who goes there?" says the first guard. "Xelan.... *sigh* Farnsworth. Im here to see dad. Let us through, please."
"That's not possible. He is in a meeting. He asked not to be disturbed." says the second guard. "At this late hour? With who?" Xelander asks. "Sky General Harios. He ask that no one, not even you, be allowed inside unless you have brought him the key." Xelanders temper rises as he yells out, "YOU LET ME IN THIS INSTANT!" Suddenly, the number of guards increase from 2 to 12. The first guard tells the group, "I am very sorry that you are in the situation that you are in. But it is very important that we not interupt this meeting. He will see you in the morning. Please go back to your room before we arrange for newer, less comfortable quarters for you." "But we have orders from the empire to...." Xelander starts to say before he is interupted. "Not even for matters of an empirical nature. His words, not mine."
The party reluctantly heads back to the inn. As they reach the doors outside the inn Xelander stops the group. "Ok. Here's how it goes. We wont get an audience with my father anytime soon. So lets get this over with. We have to go get the key. It seems to be the fastest way to getting out of this. Any objections? Suggestions?"

With book in hand, the party heads over to the Moonlight Gardens. Beautiful in looks and scenery, the Moonlight Gardens is home to many wild animals from other parts of the surrounding areas. Many of the nocternal animals are awake and watching the group make its way to the mouth of a cave in the back. There is a large gate before it that seems to be locked. "You'll not stop me now." Lorridus pipes back. "It is my destiny to rule." He takes a few steps away from the box. "This world need the rule of an iron hand and I am that man to wield it." Nis and Nem look directly at Xelander. The guard just stands there looking into space.
"Not if I have anything to do with it." Xelander says as he produces his daggers.
They are only aware of Xelander at this point. To Xelanders right are the boulders hiding the party and to the right of that is about 20 feet of open space with a few large boulders laying on the ground. To Xelanders left is Kullo, who can see everyone in the cavern and looking very interested in what is going on. Facing Xelander; Lorridus, Nis, Nem, and the guard have the boulders to their left but are paying intent attention to the armed halfling.

She heads towards the cavern entrance, shoots across the open space as stealthily as she can, then works her way around the pond towards the boulder where the guard is standing. She manages to do so without getting spotted, and when she reaches the box, she grabs it and tries to flit away. Kara circles around Kay and throws a dagger at Nem, the gnome closest to Kay. The dagger flies by and cuts the gnome across the cheek (-1 HP). Xelander charges the guard standing next to the box. The guard, formerly fascinated with the sky, immediately bears down on the halfling and produces a morningstar and shield. Despite the protection his small shield and chain shirt offers, Xelander manages to slide his dagger into the guard's stomach. Unfortunately, Xelander's dagger isn't very long (-3 HP). Eadbald holds his ground and waits for his enemies to go to him. The guard, already locked in combat with Xelander, lets out a roar of some kind and pushes the halfling away with his shield (-2 HP). The guard then attempts to push the halfling to the ground, but Xelander manages to maintain his footing. Lorridus gives the party an evil smile before casting a spell that encases him in a strange, soothing light. It doesn't seem to do much else. Kay runs over to Nem and takes a swing at the gnome, but the tiny creature ducks the attack. Nem begins to back away from Kay and Kara while Nis casts a spell. Seconds after casting the spell, there is an eruption of rock from beneath the boulder. Shards of rock rain down on Eadbald and Kay while Kara just barely dodges the stones (-7 HP). The gnome hisses at her, but is immediately silenced by a rushing dwarf (-5 HP). Nem stumbles to the ground and tries to stop the bleeding with his hands, but he's not successful. Xelander tries to dance around the guard to get at Nis. He does so successfully, and the guard misses when he gets a chance to take the halfling down. When Xelander gets to Nis, he circles around the gnome in an attempt to set-up a spell-steal later. The gnome, of course, goes into a defensive position as the halfling gets close. The guard chases after Xelander and tries to knock him down again, but he slips on something slimey. Lorridus fearlessly casts a spell and steps into the fray of fighters surrounding Nem. He reaches down to touch Nem, and provokes Atks. of Opps. from both Kara and Eadbald. Unfortunately, neither Eadbald and Kara successfully attack. For some odd reason, both warriors immediately lost interest in attacking the harmless priest as soon as they thought about it. All of Nem's wounds immediately close up. Nem clinches his teeth, but quickly returns to his feet. "Damn it," Kay adds a curse before taking another swing at Nem. This time the oversized, enchanted tree branch whacks Nem bang-on (-8 HP) and sends the gnome stumbling again. Nis, now more worried about himself, steps away from Xelander and casts a spell that sends a chain of fire towards the halfling. The fire blasts the halfling dead-on (-9 HP). Cealia rips her remaining ball of flame at the guard before closing in for melee. It sails over its head, but she had to be a little careful of hitting Eadbald. Speaking of the dwarf, he hammers into the guard again for a powerful slash to the guard's abs (-9 HP). Bloody, but not defeated, the guard takes a swing at the dwarf and manages to crack him in the head (-8 HP). Xelander jumps in to flank the guard, and he just manages to sneak his knife into an exposed area of the guard's back (-8 HP).
Lorridus jumps in to heal his remaining comrade and takes hits from Eadbald and Kay, but only Kay overcomes the priest's magical protection (-7 HP). Luckily for the party, only a few of the guard's wounds heal (+6 HP).
Kay and Kara decide to get on the priest, but once again, only Kay is able to will himself to strike Lorridus. Strike him he does! (-13 HP).
Lorridus stumbles away from the fight as he watches things quickly spiral out of control. Another powerful thwack from Eadbald brings the guard within an inch of his life, and Xelander crosses that inch a second later. Kay and Kara chase after Lorridus, and this time they both strike the priest. He falls, but remains conscious and begs for his life.
EXP: +1500, Kara Level Up!
* * * * *
Everything settles down after that. Lorridus is handed over to the authorities along with a full confession (beaten out of him by Kay), and the fallen guard that was with him is healed back to life. It is discovered he was acting against his will. Nis got out of the whole ordeal with his life, and the gnome has since been sent to an imperial dungeon. The imperial commander Harios takes the box. He doesn't clue the party in on where the box is going.
Despite all of this, Xelander's father is still reluctant to talk to him, but just as the party prepares to depart Iatsargo the next day, a messenger arrives with a bundle of goods. Everything is handed to Xelander along with a short and simple note:
"If I can't stop you from being a fool, I can, at the very least, provide you with the tools to overcome your foolishness."
Xelander has received a quest reward!
-100pp from Xelander's father -20pp for the rest of the party -10 CLW potions and 1 C.Serious.W potion -Dust of Disappearance: A handfull of dust from this small silk pouch makes the user invisible as the Greater Invisibility spell.
Is there anything anyone else wants to do in Iatsargo before the party departs for Kara'Conakar? Dremmy might want to add some kind of personal wrap-up for his quest if he wants. Last Edit: Jul 30, 2007 at 5:07pm by TG Barighm Dremmy Kilrogg's Honor Guard *****

With their gear together, shopping finished, and all mounts accounted for, the party begins to make their way towards Castle Iatsargo's north gate to depart for good. When they get there, they are stopped by a guard who seems to be clearing the way for something. As the party watches, a very long train of carts and wagons, all with windows covered and cargoes hidden from sight, approaches the town from the north. When it arrives, it almost fills the entire street, and the party is forced to sit back and wait for it to pass.
As the cart train passes, a tall man on horseback stands out from the odd imperial guard watching the train. He is an older, scrawny man with a long face and a dark disposition. His grey jacket and blackened leather gloves seem to tighten to the point of tearing as he grips his horse's reins in anger.
"Be careful with that, you oaf!" the older man yells as he points at one of the guards. "Your stupidity will set my research back 10 years if you don't get your act together."
Kay leans closer to the rest of the party. "I recognize him. That's Dr. Eckeley Hecht. He is the emperor's chief researcher. Not sure exactly what he does, but I've heard he is responsible for a lot of non-magical discoveries."
The slim, sky drake seen earlier suddenly descends from the sky and sets down near the cargo train. General Harios, a surprisingly small looking, but lean, man covered in red armour that seems to be too big for him steps off the drake and approaches Dr. Hecht.
"Hail, Dr. Hecht! I see you have arrived without incident. Is your cargo secure?" Harios peeks into a nearby cart.
Dr. Hecht smacks the hand of Harios. "It's just fine, Harios, and get your grubby hands away from it. Your brain-dead soldiers have already cost me enough time and money due to their curiousity."
Harios nods at Dr. Hecht, then steps away from the cart. "Indeed."
Dr. Hecht dismounts. "Are your riders prepared to transport the sensitive cargo?"
"We are preparing for transport as we speak," Harios replies with a nod. "It's been difficult finding drakes strong enough to carry that much cargo, but they should arrive in due time."
Dr. Hecht rolls his eyes, then begins yelling at the guards again.
Kay spots an opening in the train and points it out. "We should be able to sneak out in a minute..."
"Rolen? Is that my little Rolen Kayes?" Harios suddenly shouts. He walks right up to Kay, and after a quick examination, breaks out a beaming smile and hugs him. "It is! By the gods, boy, where have you been?"
Harios begins to fuss up Kay's hair, but the shaman pushes Harios away with a frown. "I'm not 12 years old anymore, Harios. Don't rub my head like that."
Harios, still smiling, shrugs. "I'm sorry, but old habits die hard. I haven't seen you since you were but a boy. Alas, you are clearly a man now, and our childhood games must be put behind us. How have you been?"
"I was banished, remember? How do you think I've been?" Kay narrows his eyes even more at the jovial sky general. "And it's 'Kay' now."
"'Kay'? Why would you want to abandon your glorious name? Your family was an honourable one," Harios suddenly catches the eyes of the rest of the party. "No matter. None of my business now, is it?"
"Harios, I'd love to chat, but I really must be going."
"I see. How unfortunate. Please come by when you get a chance. We really must catch up," Harios says with a wave.
Kay doesn't wave back. He just herds the party out of Iatsargo and sets a brisk pace northwards.
* * * * *
The party begins their march north. It isn't long before the trees and bushes of the Greatwood fade and give way to the rolling foothills of the Fardas mountains. By the end of the second day, they reach the first rocky outcrops and plateaus, and by the third day, the full expanse of the mountain range comes into view. The road north abruptly curves to the east as the party approaches the mountains, and for another day after that, they simply march alongside the massive titans of the north.
The journey is not a lonely one. Numerous merchant trains pass the party every day, and many other travelers and adventurers are making the trip, pilgrimage, or what have you to the spiritual city. Some even try to pawn their wares on the party, while others try to snare the party in their schemes. But the party's mission is an important one, and they remain steadfast during the entire journey. By the end of the fifth day, they approach the Cliff of the Elders, home of Kara'Conakor. TG Barighm Administrator *****

Jul 30, 2007 at 9:55pm Quote Edit like Post Options Post by TG Barighm on Jul 30, 2007 at 9:55pm FARDAS MOUNTAINS, KARA'CONAKOR =================================
The city itself is built into the side of a great cliff that seems to run for miles to the east and west and well out of sight. Only warriors and hunters camp on the ground, their teepees ringing great bonfires for all approaching visitors to see. These camps are placed at the foot of the cliff and around the great stairway of wooden planks wedged into the cliff face. The stairway leads to a massive highway network of planks for the residents of Kara'Conakor, and a countless web of ropes support each and every plank, hut, tent, and similar structure resting against the cliff face. Every now and again, large caves provide additional lodging for the inhabitants of the city, some practically tiny communites themselves featuring little houses and shelters carved out of the rock.
Two levels of the city are built on the cliff face, but a third level, reached by climbing a long length of stairs, sits upon the top of the cliff itself.
"Overlooking the rest of the city, on the top of the cliff itself, is the homes of the elders," Kay explains. "The lower levels are for the residents and artisans of the city. Visitors may do business there, but nobody, except those who have business with the elders, may go up to the top."
The party looks up to the top of the cliff. Massive tents, longhouses, and totem poles look down upon them, and massive bonfires set upon watchtowers ringing the area give the elder's perch the appearance of sporting a fiery crown.
The hunters and warriors guarding the stairs to the city do not give the party's passing a second thought. When they enter the first level of the city, an imperial ambassador discussing business with a dwarven merchant gives the party a polite nod before hustling away.
"Kara'Conakor is not a conquered nation, they are merely an ally of the empire," Kay explains. "The great north is a very wild and dangerous region, and nobody knows it better than the Conakors. They kind of have a deal in place with the empire: Conakor guards the north and the empire will leave them alone. Oh, and just a quick lesson on etiquette: 'Kara' means community, or a people of more than one. Cona is an identity word, sort of like 'you are a person of', and 'Kor' means 'rock'. So, Kara'Conakor roughly translates to 'City of the Rock People'. When you address them, you may use terms like 'Karas' or 'Conakor'. But don't be like a lot of the empire and call them 'Kors'. That's like calling a person a rock. They consider it an insult." Kay suddenly turns to Kara. "Hey, Kara...you're not from here, are you?"
Kara blushes, then hastily turns away from Kay. Kay can only shrug before leading the party to a cave filled with teepees.
"Well, here's your lodgings. I sent word of our arrival when we reached Iatsargo, so don't worry about paying for anything. Good thing too, because they only trade beads, furs, and food here. You should still be able to buy stuff from the dwarven and gnome merchants though. Anyway, my work for the empire is done. I'm going to meet with the elders and learn what I can about soul harvesters, then I'll write up a little report you can take back to the emperor". Oh, and Cealia...I don't know why, but the elders of Kara'Conakor have given you permission to visit the elder's perch."

Jul 31, 2007 at 4:27pm Quote Edit like Post Options Post by TG Barighm on Jul 31, 2007 at 4:27pm It only takes an hour for Cealia to reach the top of the cliff where the elders of Kara'Conakor reside. Her horse is a little sore from the climb, but thankfully the stairs were designed to accomodate humans and some animals, like wolves and large cats.
The druid is not too sure what to make of her invitation to the elder's perch. All she can see is a bunch of old Conakors sitting around campfires yelling at eachother or smoking pipes. They may be shamans, and they may be sympathetic to her cause, but they aren't druids.
Timed perfectly with that thought, an owl suddenly flies close to her and whips her head around to attention. She watches as the owl flies over to a teepee manned by a few unfamiliar, but clearly friendly, faces. There is no mistake about their dress or markings. They are druids. cealia Veteran Raider ***

Cealia hates to tell long stories, she bores herself. She really felt at home. Each druid had their own companion, ranging from wolves to owls to big cats. She happened to be the only one with a warhorse, but given the terrain of Kara'Conakor, she can understand why. Cealia remembers the Griffon eggs she has. She gets up and walks over to Torryn and grabs the three eggs out of the saddlebags. "I have these from a Griffon nest. The Griffon attacked our party and we had no choice but to kill it. I took the eggs in hopes of finding someone who could raise and train them. The rest of my party wants to sell them, but I just don't feel good about selling them to just anyone. I want them to have a good home and be raised well." Cealia passes the eggs to Birch, who was sitting next to her. "I thought you could raise the Griffons," Cealia says. "You are the best people that I would want to give them to." Birch smiles. "I would be very honored to take these off your hands and raise them. The Griffons will have a nice life with us." Nihilous and Koenieg smile as well, and nod to Cealia. "We'd love to take them. Here is something for your troubles." "What do you mean, you can't help me?" The gathering of elders stare at Kay with near emotionless eyes. Every elder in the longhouse is gathered around a campfire, and Kay is seated at the far end of the gathering. A smoke-pipe is being passed around between the elders as they study the young shaman, and some are watching the incense. A few local folk occasionally step inside to check on the status of the meeting or the fire, and some deliver food. One of the elders, elder shaman Redfoot, carefully studies Kay from behind a carved-pipe resembling a crawling snake. "It is as we say," Elder Redfoot replies to the young shaman's shocked outburst. "We can't aid you." Another elder, a medicine woman, nods in response to Redfoot's reply. "Yes, our knowledge of these 'soul harvesters' is very limited." "We know who they are and what they can do, but we do not know how they do it." "Their manipulation of a spirit's being is an affront to all of creation, but the spirits themselves have little to say about it." "We are very knowledgeable about the soul and the spirit world, but soul harvesters are creatures of this world who manipulate the spirit world. We merely ask permission, they simply take. We have nothing to say about them." His spirit deflated, Kay slumps down almost parrallel to the ground. He knows what the emperor will say about this. "I see. I guess the emperor will not learn what he tasked me to investigate. I guess I will go now," Kay rises to his feet, but the nearest elder grabs his leg. "Wait. We can't help you, but there is someone else who can," the elder begins. Another elder, shaman Stonespeaker, continues. "He was a member of our council. He knows much about soul harvesters. He dealt with one in the south many years ago when he was serving as an ambassador for the druids." Kay raises an eyebrow. "Huh? You mean the one the former emperor and Xelander fought?" Shaman Stonespeaker shrugs. "I suppose. He was there regardless. If anyone knows anything, he will." Kay begins to look around the lodge. "I see. Is he here in Kara'Conakor, or does he dwell somewhere in the mountains?" All of the elders suddenly straighten their backs. A few cough, and a couple turn their eyes away from Kay. Kay blinks a few times, then looks at every elder in turn. "What? What's going on?" "Elder Hemroh Greenbough, the man you are looking for, passed into the spirit world 2 years ago," an elder finally responds. Kay's mouth hangs open again. He begins to turn his head as he puzzles this new twist, but his eyes soon widen with realization. He has puzzled out what the elders are saying. "No...are you saying...? No, I'm not ready. I'm still too young!" Kay pleads. Shaman Redfoot shakes his head. "You are young, but wise; your abilities need more time to grow, but they are fully formed. You are a skilled shaman, if not a seasoned one." "If has been 5 years since you left us. You have had much time to meditate. You were but a clumsy child when you left us. You possess the confidence of a trained shaman now." "But...the tests," Kay stammers. "This is the final test of a long series of tests. Your quest is too important to delay. Do this and you will have earned our trust." Kay sighs. The medicine woman places her hand on Kay's shoulder. "Do not fret, young one. Many before you have done the same thing. There is nothing to fear." "Then I guess I have no choice. I will enter the pass tomorrow with my allies," Kay looks up at the council of elders, then nods to each one in turn. He then bows, and exits the longhouse. When the party meets up with Kay later, he informs them of his meeting. "I'm afraid we have to travel a little bit more. We need to seek council with a...special individual. He resides in a Conakor cave on the other side of Stonefrost Pass. The pass is always absolutely frigid, so you better prepare for a real cold journey. We set out tomorrow. Get some rest. Tomorrow will be a long day." Any final preparations? As the party reaches the border of the city, an elder appears and stops them. "Good luck, young shaman. Our prayers are with you," the elder then points at the road ahead. "Just continue this way and you'll reach the pass, but there is a legend about the pass. The mountains have a spirit of their own, and they won't allow trespassers to learn their secrets. Remember, when the way is difficult, your spirit is being tested. The mountains will grant you passage if you prove yourself. If the way is easy, then the mountains do not approve, and grave peril awaits you." Kay nods. "I will try to remember, elder. Thanks for all of your help." When they're out of sight of Kara'Conakor, Kay shrugs at the rest of the party. "A mountain legend? I wonder what that was about." It doesn't take long for the party to reach the pass. They travel on the road as it runs alongside the cliff. When they reach a split in the cliff, Kay leads the party off the road and approaches the cleft. As they travel through the narrow opening, the wind suddenly picks up. The party does not continue. Kay calls for everyone to make camp. He explains traveling through the pass at night is simply too dangerous, so they have to enter it at dawn. As promised, the team does, indeed, begin to tackle the pass at first light. The split in the cliff widens into a wide canyon. A ledge hugs both walls of the canyon, and a 200 ft. drop to a bed of rocks and ice sits below the ledge. As expected, the pass is absolutely freezing cold. A powerful gale-force wind whistles a continuous stream of icey air into the party's face. Capes and cloaks violently billow behind their wearers. "I was afraid of this. It's a little colder than usual," Kay grumbles. DUNGEON: STONEFROST PASS, Fardas Mountains ========================== Weather: Mixed clouds, fairly sunny, gale winds, snow Temp: -31 C. The canyon offers two paths: one to the left and one to the right. The path to the left seems to be getting more horribly battered by the wind than the path to the right, which seems a lot calmer. The path to the left is also shrouded in shadows while the one on the right is bathed in sunlight. Kay, struggling to hold his furs together, risks raising a hand to shield his face from the wind and snow. "Why is it never easy? Okay, which way...? Um...huh." Kay spits some snow out of his mouth. "Left it is. Damn this mountain."
The party begin to trudge their way along the left canyon wall. The ledge is littered with ice, dust, pebbles, and snow. The way is treacherous, and numerous party members slip and trip, but they press on. Cealia and Torryn lead the way, their protective spell shielding them from the cold and providing the rest of the party a bit of cover from the harsh winds. Eventually Kay does the same, and the shaman joins the druid at the head of the group.
About a half hour into their journey, a horrible rumbling sound stops the entire group dead in their tracks. Looking out into a canyon, a waterfall of snow, ice, and rock suddenly cascades from the ridge above and into the canyon. The ledge on the other side of the canyon is hammered by the avalanche. By the time the disturbance has faded, a 60 ft. section of the other ledge is no more.
Kay works his mouth for a minute before commenting. "I see. We better be careful from here on."
The party presses on. After what seems like an eternity in the howling winds and the biting cold, the party stumble across a cave. The sun has also begun to illuminate the canyon as it approcahes its zenith. The ledge continues past the cave and into the sunlight, and it appears to widen to a more comfortable width. The winds seem to be letting up a bit. As for the cave itself, it's dark, full of ice, and seems to slope very steeply downwards. It twists after about 20 ft, so the party can't see where the cave leads.
Which way?

Cealia settles on a rock for her source of magical light. She casts her spell and the rock begins to glow as brightly as a good torch. Once the spell is cast, Eadbald begins to advance into the cave. He manages to maintain his footing as he lightly steps into the cave. Cealia and Kay follow shortly after that, followed by Xelander and Kara. Cealia senses Torryn doesn't want to enter the cave until the rest of the party does. The horse is worried about slipping and crushing the rest of the party members.
Good thing too, because Xelander slips and suddenly slides right past the entire party. He bumps Cealia on his way past, and Eadbald reaches for the halfling, but neither fall or catch the halfling. He continues sliding on, around the twist in the cave and out of sight. The party can hear him screaming as he disappears into the cave.
Everyone is stunned for a few moments, but their shock is broken by laughter. It would appear Xelander is just fine.
"If he's laughing, it can't be too bad," Kay says as he goes down on his rump. He gives the party a wave, then pushes. He quickly gains momentum and soon the shaman is out of sight. The rest of the party decide to test the cave, and what follows is a long, slippery slide down a spiraling ice-cave of amusement park proportions.
At the bottom of the slide, the party discovers Xelander laughing his head off and begging Kay to go again. Kay shakes his head and points at an exit to the cave leading to the canyon floor. Shortly after the party reforms, Torryn comes crashing down. He most definitely did not enjoy the ride. Amazingly, nobody is injured.
The party also discovers a cluster of quartz crystals sprouting out of the cave wall. A few have broken free and fallen to the cave floor.
After a short rest, Kay leads the party back into the freezing winds of the pass. Shortly after re-entering the pass, they come across a fork in the canyon. The left canyon is full of snow, but somewhat free of wind. The right canyon is the total opposite as it appears to be where the wind is coming from. The canyon floor is also littered with rocks and ice.

Kay grits his teeth as the party turn to face the veritable wall of wind rushing towards them. "Into the wind...blah...let us continue."
At least the party is getting used to the wind whipping their faces. Torryn, Kay, and Cealia continue to lead, their bodies providing the rest of the party a modicum of protection against the wind, while the shorter ninja, dwarf, and halfling trail behind. They continue into the right canyon for what they guess is an hour, and they do so while traversing ice, snow, and loose rock. Thankfully, nobody gets injured on falls or slips, nor is anyone feeling frost-bitten, although Eadbald's armor is beginning to get heavy with ice build-up.
The party eventually reaches an open, snowy area in the canyon. No more rocks and other uncomfortable things that make the feet ache, just flat terrain with a bit of snow. The wind is still howling, so the way isn't any easier, but at least the earth itself isn't against the party anymore.
Of course, earth and wind aren't the only elements.
There is a sudden cracking sound from beneath Torryn. Cealia and Kay spin around to face the horse and discover broken ice beneath his feet. Water is beginning to gush forth onto the surface of the ice, and the horse is slowly beginning to sink. Torryn immediately steps off the broken ice while Kay begins to rub the snow away. He exposes more ice.
"Oh crap...I think we're standing on a frozen lake of some sort," Kay nervously announces as he begins to lightly step across the ice.
There is more cracking from where the horse is standing. It extends to cover the entire party, especially Eadbald who suddenly finds himself dipping a little. He shifts his weight and feels the ice beneath him shift as well.
Torryn decides to remove his ice-breaking bulk and race across the frozen lake until he reaches a snow covered boulder about 100 ft. away. He stops and looks back at the party, then whinneys in encouragement.
The party give Kay a questionning look.
"I know it should be frozen solid! It's not my fault. Okay, everyone stay calm. Let's just keep our wits about us and take this one step at a time," the shaman says as he continues to slowly make his way across the lake.
Every crack of breaking ice makes the shaman wince.

Xelander starts things off by taking a few steps across the lake. The party find themselves jealous of the halfling when they discover he is light enough to not risk breaking any more ice. Xelander does a little cheer, then scoots across the ice and joins Torryn.
Cealia also suffers very little on the lake. Her druidic training allows her to bypass any of the clumsy slipping her comrades must deal with, and her speed allows her to sprint across the lake with minimal damage to the ice.
It's not so easy for the shaman, fighter, and ninja. Kara moves away from Kay and Eadbald to minimize the amount of weight focused on this particular spot on the lake, then does her best to tip-toe across. For all of her ninja training, she still slips and lands on her rump. This causes the ice to crack, but not fail, and the ninja proceeds to take her time to crawl off that section of ice and back onto her feet. About 30 ft. from the shoreline, she slips again, but she manages to reach Cealia and Xelander without any physical injury. Her pride is a different story.
That leaves Kay and Eadbald. They decide to use Eadbald's rope in case one of them falls into the lake. With the heavy dwarf in tow, Kay struggles to maintain his footing, but the stout Eadbald has little trouble keeping his. The ice cracks and shifts under the weight of Eadbald's gear, but it holds for the rest of the journey.
*Lucky bastards. Two critical successes.
The party reforms and continues their journey through the pass, but the cold is starting to take its toll. Xelander and Eadbald manage to tough out the mountan's icy grip, but Kara is starting to shiver.
Not long after leaving the frozen lake, the party comes across the remains of a rockslide. It's quite a large pile of black and pink rock, and it must have occurred fairly recently because there isn't that much snow on the rocks. The rockslide fills the entire canyon, so it's impossible to continue without crossing it.
Kay looks over his shoulder. "We're not going in circles, are we? No, I'm sure we're not. This is a rockslide."
After examining the rockslide, the party notices three distinct "paths" through the rock: directly going through the middle of the rockslide forces one to overcome numerous boulders, loose rocks, and similar related obstacles. The right-most "path" doesn't have as many rocks. Instead, it has lots of ice-pockets. The left-most "path" features numerous snow drifts.
No way is easier than the other, but every character has his or her own unique skills and traits that will give him or her a good chance to overcome one of the paths with minimal injury. Choose a path not suited to your character, and you may receive numerous injuries.
Because Cealia is immune to difficult natural terrain, the path she chooses affects Torryn and not herself.
Kay nods in the direction of the right-most path. "I guess I'll go this way. Slipping on ice and falling on my ass sounds better than falling on rock."
Kara, being good at climbing and jumping, elects to go right through the center of the rockslide.

Kara deftly jumps between boulders and scrambles up rock piles with the greatest ease. She scoots across the rockslide in minutes, and after a little more jumping and climbing, ends up on the far side without a single injury. Eadbald doesn't exactly scoot across the way a ninja can, but he's able to navigate the first bit of the rockslide without smashing his head on a rock. He slips and falls near the center of the rockslide, but he manages to prevent himself from hitting anything. The last bit of his journey is much slower, but he successfully crosses the rockslide without injury.
"Don't worry, Xelander. We'll still be within eyesight of eachother," Kay informs the halfling as he begins to slip and slide his way across the icey sections of the rockslide. Xelander joins him, but he doesn't fare any better. He immediately slips and falls, but his tumbling skill allows him to avoid serious injury. The same thing happens again at the end of his journey, but he doesn't receive any injuries. Kay likewise avoids any mishaps.
That leaves Cealia to guide Torryn across the ice. The druid barely notices the ice and uneven rock, but Torryn spreads his legs and treats every step like a disaster waiting to happen. For all of his reluctance and complaining, the horse does a good job crossing the ice.
EXP: +500 ('cept Kara: player absence)
Everyone crosses safely, but the magically unprotected party members are still feeling the pinch from the cold. Now Xelander is starting to shiver (-4 UNL).
But the mountain shows no mercy. Shortly after leaving the worst of the rockslide behind them, a nearby roar forces the party to spin around and face a new danger. A tall, vaguely humanoid creature with a beastly face, powerful arms and legs, and thick white fur emerges from a nearby cave. With it's eyes wide with rage and desperation, it begins to rush the party with little thought for its own saftey.
"It's a yeti, and in this climate, there is a good chance it's starving. Don't bother trying to reason with it," Kay yells as he draws his club and shield.
The yeti is quickly closing the 60 ft. gap between it and the party. This area is pretty open, so don't worry about large obstacles, but the terrain does count as difficult terrain (edge of the rockslide; many small rocks and bits of ice makes movement difficult).

Cealia creates her massive ball of fire. It falls out of the space in front of the druid and plops on the snow. After melting all the snow immediately around the ball, Cealia directs it at the yeti. The two meet about halfway between the yeti and the party, and the beastly humanoid stops when the burning ball of fire rolls up to it. Its curious look immediately transforms to pain as the sphere licks at the yeti's toes (-7 HP).
Eadbald uses this minor distraction to move around the yeti, but the extra few steps he needs to take to avoid the sphere uses up his time for the round. Despite drawing his club, Kay settles on using his shortbow. He, Kara, and Xelander all fire their weapons at the yeti, but only Xelander's bolt penetrates the yeti's thick hide (-3 HP).
Torryn stays by Cealia's side.
The yeti steps away from the flaming sphere, and seeing Eadbald approaching just off to the side, charges the dwarf. He is absolutely hammered by the yeti's two powerful fists (-8, -14 HP damage).

Xelander and Kara wait outside while Kay, Eadbald, and Cealia enter the cave. They discover their mercy isn't needed. Apparently the yeti felt the exact same way, so it decided to end its own life by crushing its skull with a large rock. As the party glances around the cave, they discover the remains of other warriors, treasure hunters, and adventurers who have attempted to pass through Stonefrost in the past. Every humanoid's bones have been stripped clean of all meat while their gear was tossed into a corner to form a neat little pile of equipment. None of the skeletons look fresh, so it looks like the yeti hasn't had an unlucky traveler to gnaw on for awhile. "Neat. This might be worth a quick peek," Kay says as he begins to examine the discarded gear. *Treasure list to provided later. As the party reforms outside the yeti's cave, Stonefrost's winds take another bite out of magically unprotected party members. Kara and Xelander's teeth are chattering now (-5 UNL). Kay promises their destination can't be much further. It is now getting deep into the afternoon, and the canyon is beginning to fill with shadows. It is also starting to show the party signs of an ancient civilization. Carved bricks covering a section of the canyon wall, crumbled statues with few recognizeable features carved out of the rock, and crumbled pottery are spotted from time to time. Some of it is nestled within the canyon wall while other artifacts spill out of niches nestled behind boulders and the aforementioned statues. At one point during the journey, the party gets a glimpse of what appears to be ramparts and towers on some faraway mountain peak, but the howling winds and snow quickly obscure the sighting. Not long after making this curious discovery, the winds die down and are replaced by a heavy snowfall. It's difficult to see anything more than 100 ft. away, and the canyon is quickly filling with snow, but they have no trouble spotting the massive revenant of this mysterious civilization. Easily rising 300 ft. to bridge the canyon walls, a massive archway supported by two gigantic columns emerges from the snowy murk like some kind of prowling giant. The huge blackstone structure was clearly some kind of bridge in ancient times, but the entry stones to the central portion of the arch itself have long since crumbled away and fallen to the ground below. On the right side of the canyon, nestled between the column and canyon wall, and using the ruined stones as cover, two humanoids sit around a blue-coloured campfire. An animal pelt has been stretched out between the stones to provide some form of makeshift shelter against the snow, and the fire seems to have little trouble burning in this weather. As for the humanoids themselves, they are quite large and fuzzy; most definitely not your typical race. Their large horns, bullish faces, and thick skin give them the appearance of a cow-like people, and the numerous weapons at their sides and thick fur coats marks them as hunters. "Yak folk," Kay mumbles. "They 'share' the mountains with Conakor, but not because they want to. Their spiritual leaders are generally trustworthy, but their warriors continually raid and destory Conakor's outposts without any reprieve. It's difficult to tell who is friendly and who is barbaric among their people. We must be careful," Kay suddenly shivers. "But I must say that fire looks very warm and inviting." Suggestions? Kara will grab the Endure Elements potion. She immediately quaffs it. She stops shivering moments later.
Kay stares at the fire within the yakfolk camp for a moment before turning to face the canyon.
"You're probably right. Let's just continue."
The party bypasses the yakfolk camp without so much as a wave. The yakfolk do spot them as they trek on by, but the hunters only stare at them. They don't make any hostile move towards the party, so the party pays them little mind.
Cealia's winter blanket helps Xelander ward off the cold for an extra hour before he begins to shiver again. The wind remains light and the snow heavy, but it's a far cry from the chill carried by the howling winds earlier in the day. That said, the shadows created by the setting sun are beginning to fill the entire canyon, and the chill of night is starting to fall upon the party.
Kay informs the party he has a feeling their destination is very close now, so he does his best to pick up the pace. The quickened movement helps keep everyone warm somewhat, but they quickly come to a halt when they spot a few larger shapes milling around in the canyon. The party ducks behind a boulder and watches them for awhile until they come into view. Unlike the hunters, these yakfolk sport large weapons and are definitely interested in things other than hunting. The last yakfolk has a great deal of beads woven into its mane.
"More yak folk, and by the looks of them, warriors," Kay announces. "And they're coming this way. I only see three, but yakfolk warriors are a nasty bunch."
Kay suddenly looks back at the party's long line of footprints in the snow. "Uh, oh. We're going to have a hard time avoiding them."

The party decide to go with the mist plan. Good thing too, because Xelander is reaching the end of his rope (-3 UNL). Eadbald finally feels the chill as well (-3 UNL).
Cealia readies her spell and casts it when the warriors begin to approach the party's footprints. They don't seem the least bit surprised when mist suddenly fills the canyon, but they do stop for a moment as it surrounds them. When the yakfolk are almost completely obscured from sight, the party emerges and moves as quickly as they can into the canyon. The wind provides a little audio cover for the crunching of snow beneath their boots, and they manage to get a fair distance away from the warriors before the mist is dispersed by the wind. When they look back at the yakfolk, they find the heavy snowfall provides an adequate screen for the party.
EXP: +500, Cealia +250 for being tricksy
Their journey is nearing its end. The final hours in the canyons of Stonefrost are fairly uneventful compared to the first few, and they soon reach a bend in the canyon that ends at a high cliff-wall. A cleft in the cliff wall is flanked by numerous rock paintings, clearly of Conakor origin, and a miniature totem pole sits a few feet to the side of the cleft. Opposite of the cleft, some 100 ft. away, is a massive 60 ft. tall statue of some kind of ancient warrior carved out of the stone.
Kay smiles when he sees the cleft, but his smile quickly fades when he approaches it. The path to the area beyond appears to be blocked by ice.
"Oh, no. Oh, no. No no no," Kay repeats over and over again. "Damn it, you stupid mountain! We passed your tests, now let us pass! We can't melt this much ice. Stop messing with us!"
A sudden rumbling sound interrupts the party. They spin around to search for the source of the noise. They discover a few new pieces of rock are now at the base of the statue. They look up to the canyon ridge above in search of evidence of a rockslide or avalanche, but they jump when they realize the source of the disturbance is coming from the statue. The party watches in terror as the collossal statues begins to twist its head around its neck, then stretches its arms. It then raises the sword and shield permanently attached to its hands and smashes them against the wall. This causes the braces holding the statue in place to fall away, but it also creates a mini-avalanche that fills the only exit. It now lifts its giant leg, taking one step towards the party that shakes the ground, and its head seems to lock onto the party's position below it.
"What was that?" Kay yells out as he spins around. His jaw nearly falls off his face it drops so low. "Holy mother of...!"
The collossus is 50 ft. away from the party and 100 ft. away from the cleft.

"Not the snow, your magic dust!" Kay yells as he grabs Xelander's pack of dust and begins sprinkling it on the party. He also takes care of Torryn.
*I'm not sure how much dust you can use before it runs out. The item description doesn't really say. I'll only consider the dust partially used.
Once everyone is invisible, they quickly brush as much snow off themselves as they can before fleeing past the collossus. The collossus doesn't seem to be able to discern minute details like footprints and bits of snow resting on party members' shoulders, so it begins to spin around in a circle. When its scan of the canyon proves futile, it seems to make a guess that the party is still hiding in the cleft, so it strikes at the gap with its sword.
The sword strikes the ice and crushes into into neat little chunks which clears the way to the area beyond. The force of the strike leaves the collossus' sword shattered, and the collossus itself suddenly freezes in place. The party stares at the collossus in mid-swing for awhile, but when it doesn't move, they begin to approach it. It would appear the collossus has reverted back to its harmless aesthetic state.
While working their way through the area, the party discover a sword lying on the ground. It appears to have fallen out of the statue's shattered sword.
Sword of the Mountain Kings: This grandly named longsword is clearly magical. Frost seems to form on the blade regardless of the environment it is in (Longsword of Frost+1).

The party continues through the cleared cleft until they reach an opening to a round area in the canyon. Here the canyon ends at an entrance to a gaping maw of a cave. Numerous small totem poles like the one the party just passed ring the entrance, and a number of unused funeral pyres sit within the cave's entrance. The flickering light of fire can be seen inside the cave.
Unfortunately, the way to the cave is not easy. A long, nearly vertical stairway is the only entrance into the canyon-valley, some 80 ft. below.
"And this is why I suggested you bring some climbing gear. We might have needed it if we ventured into the mountains," Kay explains as he pulls out his rope and climbing gear. "And here we are. Come on, someone tie this end to something while I set pikes. This is much easier to do with this stuff."
Unfortunately, this makes it impossible for Torryn to enter, but he doesn't seem to mind. The sight of the cave makes the horse terribly uneasy, and he would refuse to enter anyway. There is still a lot of time left on Cealia's spell, so Torryn should be okay.
When Kay spots Cealia silently discussing the situation with Torryn in their strange, beastial way, he walks up to the horse and pats it. "Don't worry. We won't be too long. He can hide out in the yeti's cave until we come back."
The climb into the canyon-valley isn't difficult, and the party soon find themselves within the cramped confines of the cave. It quickly opens up after a few metres to reveal a fire pit and a ring of everburning torches. At the back of the cave is a large and very heavy looking wooden door. The door is adorned with paintings of odd looking people, and they have a creepy quality none of the party can't quite put their finger on. Actually, everything about the cave, the unused funeral pyres, the totem poles depicting ravens, and the door strike the party as creepy. Cealia now knows why Torryn didn't want to enter this place.
"All of you sit here and rest. Take a moment to warm up, repair your weapons, heal your wounds, or whatever you need to do," Kay walks over to one of the everburning torches and picks it up. He then steps over to the empty firepit and produces a small handful of twisted, black sticks from his beltpack. After saying a few words, he throws the stick into the firepit and begins muttering a complex series of queer words that seem to echo off the walls of the cavern. The power of his incantation produces that same freaky quality of the cave in general. When he finally finishes, the twigs begin to emit a slight wisp of smoke. Kay then drives the torch into the ground and sits very close to the wisp of smoke. He seems to be meditating.
After a few moments, he speaks. "When we're finished here, your work with the emperor will probably be complete. So, what do you guys plan on doing next? We're all a lot richer than when we started. You guys have dreams right?" His speaking doesn't seem to interrupt his meditation.
CAMPFIRE: The party is waiting for Kay to complete his ritual. This is a good time for everyone to share their thoughts, feelings, and misgivings about the situation at hand, or they can joke, reminisce, or otherwise relax long enough to converse.

[glow=blue,6,300]UPDATE[/glow] *************
The black twigs in the firepit suddenly burst into flames. The flames quickly die down, and they transform into a nearly invisible, black flame.
"Ah, here we go," Kay mutters as returns to his feet. He grabs the everburning torch and holds it against the tiny black fire, and after a few moments, the black flames transfer over to the everburning torch. The blue colour of the everburning torch fades and is eventually replaced by the black flame. As soon as this process is complete, a white, wolf-like canine with silvery fur on the face and tail suddenly appears out of nowhere next to Kay. It looks more like a half-wolf and hound half-breed. The shaman doesn't seem to be the least bit surprised when the beast appears. He even smiles and bends down to pat its head.
"This is good. Our spiritual guardians are here," Kay nods at the party. The party is a little confused at first, but they are surprised again when a horse nudges at Cealia's shoulder. The druid spins around, but her shock immediately fades when she discovers Torryn is the horse who is nudging her. At least, it looks like Torryn; the horse's colours seem duller, and a strange, wispy mist swirls around the horse's hooves and tail.
Kay smiles at Cealia. "He is here in spirit, if not here in flesh. See? I kept my promise."
Xelander suddenly feels a wet nose pressing against his leg. He looks down to find an ash-coloured cat rubbing against his leg. Once the cat has gotten Xelander's attention, it sits down and stares back at the halfling.
Eadbald almost jumps when a heavy hand presses down on his shoulder. He discovers the hand is that of a dwarf, and when he spins around, he discovers a dwarven warrior wearing ancient armour. This spiritual ancestor still holds the heavy hammer and shield it died with. For some reason, the dwarf keeps its helmet low, so Eadbald can't recognize the spirit.
Kara simply stares at her hand. She suddenly finds herself grasping a dagger seemingly crafted out of crystal. When Kay spots this, a genuine look of puzzlement crosses over his face.
"That...is very peculiar. I have never heard of one's spirit guardian being a weapon," Kay looks back at the rest of the party.

Eadbald asks his question, but the spirit doesn't answer. It simply nods its head, then looks over to Kay.
"Right, let's get this over with," Kay marches over to the door at the back of the cave. He mutters a few words in front of the door, then makes a few strange gestures. After a moment, the silvery hound bites at the door, and soon the doors swing open of their own accord. Unlike some bardic tale, there is no sudden gust of wind, smell, or creaking noise that accompanies the opening of the doors. They simply open and an odd stillness settles upon the party.
Kara suddenly shakes her head at Kay and takes a seat by the firepit. Kay walks over to her and they whisper for a few moments, then he returns to the party.
"She doesn't want to risk a chance encounter with one of her ancestors. She will wait here for us.
The 'Ghostwalk' is a silly imperial name, although not inaccurate. Conakor elders know this place as the Spirit Vault. It is a tomb for the wisest and bravest people to ever live under Kara'Conakor's wing, and it is the home of the one we must consult," Kay explains as he raises the black torch over his head. He swings it back and forth a few times, and as the light from the torch fades in one section of the cave, so too does the guardian spirit in that section fade. "This torch is blessed. Any spirit who attempts to cross into its light is immediately forced into the material realm. It is like a 'ghost touch' weapon, if you've ever heard of it, except for the spirits themselves. This allows us to defend ourselves if we have to, but understand the spirit can strike you too. As long as you're within 20 ft. or so of this torch, you will have a chance to fight, but step outside its boundary...well, be sure to get back into it, okay? They may be heroes and elders, but some people, no matter who they are, have difficulty accepting their deaths."
Kay steps over to the entrance to the Vault and glances down the tunnel beyond the creepy doors. A stairway can be seen descending into the darkness of the mountain, and the light scent of mould fills the nostrils of the party.
"Oh, and one more thing. The Spirit Vault is no mere hole in the mountain, it exists on the boundaries of the spirit realm. It is the one place a shaman can communicate with those who have passed beyond the mortal coil like one does to a neighbour or friend. Because of this, the strength of your physical body has little power here. Only your soul has any true reach. Be careful in here."

Kay gathers everyone and their spirit guardians together and begins to descend down the dark tunnel into the murk below. After a fair amount of time, a noticeable change comes over the party. The creepy feeling everyone had before upgrades to uneasiness, and a slight chill passes through the party. Kay noticeably shivers, and he begins to rub his arms. "Whew. I'm suddenly feeling very nervous. Why are we here again? Oh, right. Well, maybe we can tell the emperor we're sorry and..." Kay shakes his head. "No, we can do this. It's just a bunch of ghosts. Nothing special. Just a few silly whisps and creepy noises, not unlike the sounds in an old house...gah, I'm babbling."
GROUP AFFLICTION: A slight touch from an unseen hand, a heavy breath into the ear, the feeling of being watched, a shadow seen out of the corner of the eye, and whispers from the darkness...all contribute to the atmosphere within the Spirit Vault. It is a very unsettling feeling, and all party members are afflicted with the Shaken condition for as long as they remain within this dungeon.
By the time the party and their guardians reach the bottom of the stairs, Kay finds himself clutching the black torch so hard his knuckles have gone white. He quickly examines the room, then spins around to face the party with a frightened look.
"Umm...now may be a bad time to mention I've never been here before, so I have NO idea where I'm going," Kay says with a nervous grin.
SPIRIT VAULT (Entrance): Mortal's Folly **********
The first area the party enters within the vault is a circular room some 30 ft. in diameter. The ceiling is quite low, only about 8 ft. high, not a problem for the manifestion of Torryn, but it does give the vault a cramped, claustrophobic feeling. A white powder interspersed with larger bits of a hard, white object cover the ground, and the walls are tiled, if you will, with 1 ft. long slats of a white substance. Kay closely examines the walls for a moment, then cringes once he realizes what the slats are.
"Oh god...I think these are bones," Kay announces. He closes his eyes.
Three tunnels, one to the north, west, and east, lead out of the circular room, but every tunnel is blocked by a heavy stone door. Each door is marked: the north door has an old sword placed above it, the western door has what appears to be a mummified raven above the door, and the eastern door a silver cup placed in kind.
There is also a ring protruding from the ceiling in the middle of the room. It has an odd, glassy look to it, and its colour dims whenever the black torch's light passes over it.
Actions? Actions for your guardians?

Kay thinks for a moment. "Conakors don't really believe in classes, so I think the cup might refer to artisans. I think the raven may refer more to the process of preparing the dead itself."
There is a sudden bout of mysterious whispers from the raven-marked door. Kay shivers and makes it a point not to spin around.
When Xelander reaches for the cup-marked stone door, he discovers there is no handle or any other obvious way to open the door. He's a little puzzled. After a moment, the ashen cat reaches up and paws at Xelander's leg. It meows a few times, then stands beside the door. It looks like the cat wants to go through this door.
Kay brings his torch closer to Xelander and the cat. "What's got the spirit so agitated?"
Eadbald carefully examines the ring. There appears to be a half-moon shaped scratch around the ceiling-bolted portion of the ring. It would appear you can twist the ring around.

Eadbald finds scratches marking the path the stone doors open. This proves they can, at the very least, be opened in some way.
Xelander tries pushing the stone door open, but it doesn't budge. The ashen cat is now brushing against the stone door.
"Looks like the kitty wants in," Kay looks at his torch. He rolls his eyes. "Oh. Right. Sorry. I'll go stand over there."
Kay carries the torch well away from Xelander and the cat. Once out of torchlight, the cat fades away into the darkness. After a moment, the sound of a latch releasing echoes through the tunnel, and the stone door opens. When Kay returns with the torch, the cat emerges from the tunnel and begins licking its paws.
"It wanted to pass through the door, but the torch forced it into the material realm," Kay says with a shrug.
As the party enter the tunnel beyond the silver cup-marked door, the sound of machinery suddenly fills the tunnel. It only lasts for a few moments.
Kay looks puzzled. "How odd. I didn't think Conakors would use machines in a tomb."
SPIRIT VAULT-The Craftmason's Hall ***********
The tunnel winds and turns its way through the mountain bedrock for a ways before opening up into a cavern. The walls of the cavern are filled with niches containing bundles of deceased Conakors, and some of these niches contain gems, jewelry, artifacts, and tools. Sitting on the floor of the cavern is a large bronze pan. A blue-fire burns beneath it, and there appears to be something within the pan. Beyond the cavern is a crevasse, and a trickle of water runs down the walls. The party can clearly see Lickme frogs frolicking in the water.
As the party enters the cavern, Kay's black torch suddenly reveals a man in heavy furs kneeling beside the pan. Upon being discovered, the ghost rises to its feet and faces the party. It studies every party member in kind for a moment, then nods at Kay.
"Good day, shaman," the ghost speaks in a soft voice. "I trust you have business within the vault?"
Kay nods, and after a few nervous licks of his lips, replies. "Um, yes. We're looking for elder Greenbough. Is he here?"
"No, he is not. He is in the elder's hall, a place found within the northern section of the vault, beyond the barracks. Tread carefully, shaman, for the hunters of the past guard this holy sanctuary," the ghost returns to kneeling in front of the pan. After a moment, it pulls the object out of the pan and tosses it Kay. It appears to be a silver key.
"What's this for?"
"My remains were erroneously placed within the barracks. With them is a jewelry box. I care little for the box, but its contents are very valuable to me. Please return them to me"
Kay nods. "All right, spirit. We will try."
With little other business left in the Craftmason's Hall, Kay leads the party back to Mortal's Folly (the entrance room).
"Okay, so the Elder's Hall is beyond the 'barracks'. Now where do you suppose that is?" Kay asks to nobody in particular.

The party figures out a way to get Kay to reach the ring protruding from the ceiling and twist it. It's not that high, so this challenge is easily overcome. The ring turns with a slight, grating noise, and the sound of something being caught is heard. There is a mechanical click, and the silver cup marked door swings shut. That allows Kay's guardian to go through the sword marked door and open it. The black torch's light is momentarily blocked, so Kay's hand passes through the ring.
An eerie cry is heard when the party steps through the sword marked door. They follow a short tunnel that leads to a room with more of the bone-slat walls. A path continues forward to an intersection, and soon the party realizes the cavern ceiling rises into a dome-like shape, roughly about 20 ft. high, but the surrounding walls don't reach to the top of the ceiling. They only rise about 8 ft.
SPIRIT VAULT, The Barracks ***********
The path continues to another intersection further on, and another one after that. Looking down the intersecting paths, the party spots more intersections giving the impression of a series of boxed rooms, each of which is marked with series of ancient symbols Kay can't interpret, and a few rusty weapons. There doesn't appear to be obvious entrances to these small rooms. At the far end of the cave, on the end of the path the party is currently navigating, is another heavy stone door.
The party spots a rope hanging from a winch of some type that is bolted to the ceiling. The rope ends in one of the small rooms directly to the party's right.
As the party takes a few steps into the barracks, the stone door suddenly swings shut.
"Figures," Kay whispers.
A pale-skinned man wearing leather armour and wielding a handaxe suddenly steps into the torchlight from one of the intersecting paths.
"Intruders!" the man yells as he draws a knife with his other hand. "Nobody disturbs the elders' rest."
Kay licks his lips, then nervously replies. "B-b-be gone, revenant of the past. The services of your f-former life are no longer required."
"Like hell they are! You will not defile this tomb with your greed!" the man yells, but instead of performing a hostile action, he merely backpeddles until he steps out of the torchlight.
The barracks is suddenly filled with murmuring from what seems like hundreds of unseen people.
"This doesn't look, or sound, good. We gotta figure out a way to get out here," Kay warns as he spins around searching for the source of the murmurs.

Whatever thoughts and plans of greed we may have are superseded by our mission for the Empire. We are only here to speak to Elder Greenbough, nothing more. We assure you nothing will be taken out of here."
