It's a long throw, and the lamp falls short, shattering on the starboard steps leading up to the foc's'le deck. James, catching wind of what Kit is intending, grabs the other lamp and tosses it towards the foc's'le deck as well. It likewise falls short, hitting the wall between the stairs. The captain draws his pistol and fires at Kit. The bullet whizzes by and slams into the mast. James nearly pisses his pants. "What the hell was that?" "It looks like the brotherhood has somehow learned to shrink their bombards," Amelia replies. "This is not good." "You scurvy dogs will fall to the brotherhood!" the captain yells. Gandt charges up onto the foc's'le deck. Lia casts her spell, and moments after her hand his wreathed in flames, tosses a ball at the oil. With a whoosh, the stairs and the wall next to them ignite. (-6HP each). The two sailors with the captain jump down to the Sea Wyvern's foc's'le deck and charge Gandt with a yell. Gandt flattens the first one with his shield (+1 kill), while the second slips inside his guard and swings his scimitar at Gandt. The blow deflects harmlessly off Gandt's armor. The two sailors amidships begin reloading the bombard. The two near the ballista grab buckets of sand and dump it on the fire. The flames on the wall are extinguished. The sailors onboard the Sea Wyvern toss grapples across to secure secure the ships together. Round 2: Kit grabs another lantern, this one near the foc's'le deck and tosses it. It lands short of the ballista, on the foc's'le deck. James grabs another lantern, this one near the quarterdeck. He tosses it at the bombard. Unfortunately he slips as he tosses it and the lantern falls harmlessly into the ocean. The captain reloads and fires at Gandt. Gandt grunts under the impact, but his shield deflects the bullet. Gandt smashes the other invader into a pulp (+1 kill) and then jumps across to the Quarterdeck of the Purity's Prow. Lia tosses another fireball. This one arches high in the air, barely missing a sail, before it falls, right on the ballista. The fire splashes harmlessly about. The stairs continue to burn (-5HP). The sailors at the bombard continue preparing to fire again. The sailors at the ballista put out the fire on the stairs. (New Actions?) The enemy captain leaps down to the main deck and reloads his pistol. Gandt pursues. He makes it to the bottom of the stairs. Lia runs up onto the foc's'le deck as well, ducking down behind the railing. The sailors of the Purity's Prow foc's'le deck turn their ballista towards James and Kit, and fire. Kit takes the brunt of the shot off his buckler, which is destroyed by the shot. The sound of breaking bones fills the air as Kit is thrown backwards into the railing (-21HP, -2 dex for the broken arm). The large bolt catches James as well, sending him flying back off the foc's'le deck and onto the main deck (-11HP from the bolt, -3NL from the fall). One of the two sailors manning the bombard draws his scimitar, while the other finishes loading the bombard. The sailors onboard the Sea Wyvern return fire. One of the bolts grazes the main mast (-5HP), while the other crashes into a bow section (-6HP). Round 3: Kit decides to stay down for the moment. James scurries back up onto the foc's'le deck. The captain fires at Gandt. Gandt fills a minor distraction as the bullet actually manages to penetrate his armor (-3HP). The captain moves farther across the deck. Gandt charges the captain, slamming into his with his spiky shield. Blood splatters from several spiky wounds, but the captain still stands (-22HP). Lia rushes over to Kit. She quickly murmurs the words to a spell (CMW), proving once and forever to Kit that having broken bones forcibly knit back together is actually more painful that having them broken in the first place (+14 HP, bones healed). The two sailors at the ballista draw their scimitars and leap down on Gandt. Gandt catches one of them with a mighty swing of his shield, sending his lifeless corpse overboard. The second one's scimitar shatters as it makes contact with Gandt's armor. And then, KAAAAAAAAAAAAAABLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAM! (Critical Misfire) When the smoke clears, all that's left on the deck of the Purity's Prow is splinters, pieces of twisted metal, burning flesh, and Gandt, lying face down. (-10HP from the explosion). The remains of the main mast lie across the Sea Wyvern, and a huge hole has been ripped in the main deck of the Purity's Prow where the bombard once rested next to the main mast. Here and there, a few flames gnaw at the wood. "Gandt!" Amelia yells. "Get up, ye scurvy dog." Gandt stirs, slowly. "Good, now the rest of ye, get that mast off my ship, and repair the rigging." He then leads a small group of sailors below decks, where they find the ship nearly void of supplies and only a meager amount of loot (270gp, 300 sp, and assorted odds and ends of gems, worth maybe a total of 750 gp). The Sea Wyvern sails into the mouth of the river, which looks like little more than a big bite out of the cliff walls. The river plummets over a 200 ft water fall into the small bay, which is lined with narrow strips of rough beach. The whole bay is barely 400 feet across. The crew board the boats and begin lowering them. James, Illyria, Lia, Kit and Gandt board the second boat, while the crew board the first boat. Raji leaps out and begins swimming towards shore.
Raji is about halfway to the shore, when suddenly the water around him bursts to life, he suddenly finds himself surrounded by 7 reptillian heads, attached to a large gray-brown reptilian body. All 7 heads snap at him at once. He fights valiantly, but is ripped to shreds in mere seconds. The seven heads rotate towards the PCs boat.
Illyria recognizes it as a Hydra, a magic beast that can have as many as 12 heads. She also knows that the heads will regrow when cut off, unless fire or acid is applied to the wound. (+25XP)

James and Illyria hold their position.
Lia begins chanting another spell. Her arm becomes sheathed in flames, which she hurls at the hydra. The flame washes across the stump of the neck, schorching it (-4HP). The shark charges in again, but the heads dodge the teeth of the shark.

After several more minutes, they finally get the boat righted and they all manage to get back in and gather the water barrels back up. They row over to the waterfall and fill their barrels, then return to the ship. James hands the collar back to Lia. "I'm sorry," he says, and starts give her a comforting hug, then thinks better of it and backs away. Gandt takes a while to investigate the wrecks on the bay floor. He finds 102gp in a smashed chest. (+15XP) The two ships anchor near the bay for the night, then set sail again the next morning. Day 1: Gandt and Lia work together to delay the Illyria's disease. Day 6: Gandt and Lia are unable to delay the diease, but Illyria manages to keep it from progressing. Late in the afternoon, the two ships sail into the harbor that houses the small tribal village of Renkrue. A small deligation of local elders meet the ships at the small dock, after a few moments they're laughing and quite friendly. Lavinia, James and Avner walk off with some of the elders to negotiate for supplies. Amelia chooses to stay on the Sea Wyvern and study the pistol Kit retrieved. Conrad is more than happy to disembark, and makes a beeline for the closest temple once he is ashore. Skald disembarks and disappears into the interior of the island. Urol disembarks, but stays near the shore, observing the tidal pools. He scribbles in his note book, and every so often lets out a little squeal of delight as he finds some new and unusual animal. Lirith disembarks as well, happy to see land and other people. She immediately heads toward what serves as the local tavern. Lia and Gandt escore Illyria to the nearest temple. The priest there listens politely to the problem, then gathers a small group of initiates together. They prepare a rather foul tasting brew, that the priest asks Illyria to drink before they begin. The ceremony is brief, but when its finished the priest declares the curse has been lifted and Illyria healed of her disease. (+500XP for Gandt and Lia for keeping Illyria alive.) One of the priests then shows Lia to a secluded spot where she can perform her druidic ceremony. (Does Kit disembark? What does the party do while in Renkrue? As they are walking away, Lavinia suddenly loses her composure, turns and punches Avner square in the mouth, as he tumbles backwards onto the dock, Lavinia reaches for her rapier, but James grabs her arm and whispers something in her ear that neither Kit or Gandt can hear. It doesn't seem to calm her much, but she takes her hand off the hilt. "Get on the ship, Avner" she hisses before stalking away. Another week goes buy, and the ships are once again accosted by monsters, this time a bit stronger, but again nothing the party can't fend off. (560 XP for Lia, 720 for rest). The ships pass by an island with tall, impassable cliffs, but fail to find any place to make landing. The seas seem unusually still, and the sails hang limp on the masts. As the sun burns fitfully through the fog, it reveals a strange transformation appears to have taken place, turning the sea almost solid, with waves frozen in place. Finally, the mist clears, and the strange sight fills the crew with unease. Expanding out from the Sea Wyvern is a strange, wet green field of weed. The swath of dirty green stretches flatly in all directions. To the stern, it extends for perhaps a half mile, beyond which lie the open waters of the mocking sea. In all other directions, the weed extends to the horizon. Trapped within its vice are dozens of other long-dead ships, their hulls protruding from the sargasso at odd angles, masts askew, sailes hanging in tatters. One such ship lies mired only six hundred feet to the port, and it seems to be in better shape than the others. Perhaps most unnerving, however, is neither the sight nor smell of so much sun-baked seaweed. It is the unnatural silence, for the thick choking green has robbed the Sea Wyvern even of the strangely comforting sound of water lapping against her hull. It is not a healthy silence. It is the silence of a graveyard. Several of the sailors are whispering among themselves. The phrase "Journey's End" is repeated several times. (Actions?) Leaving the crew to the nigh-hopeless task of cutting through the seaweed, the party heads towards the closest ship, which lies just a few hundred yards away. As they approach, they can read out the faded letters "The Rage" on the bow of the ship.
(The Rage)
The wreck is strangled with weeds and vines, almost as if immense green claws hold the ship in their grasp. In many places the caravel, a ship hauntingly similar to the Sea Wyvern, has been torn apart by the vegetations rampant growth.
The ship is listing to port, which just happens to be from where the party approaches, slipping, sliding, and tripping over the strange seaweed. The climb up to the deck is much easier than expected, and the party soons find themselves standing on the rotting deck. The beams and planks make squelching noises as the party surveys the smashed and broken weapons. An overturned cauldron lies near one side rail, and there are scorch marks, not to mention massives of seaweed, here and there. A strange, green mucus clings to the deck and broken mast as well.
A shattered door and what appears to have been a makeshift barricade lead below decks.

Jul 25, 2007 at 8:41am Quote like Post Options Post by keno on Jul 25, 2007 at 8:41am Lia, Gandt, and Kit advance below decks, while James and Illyria keep watch on the deck.
The ship creaks with each step the trio takes, and here and there seaweed pokes up through the boards. The stairwell to the lowest deck is completely blocked by the stuff. The crew quarters are filled with broken and tools, boards, and weapons, and everything is covered with green mucus, seaweed, and what might once have been blood. The trio poke around, but don't find anything of significance except for a few loose coins (all coppers).
Advancing across the upper hold area, they once again find smashed tools and supplies, and a large amount of spoiled and rotted food. There's a slight stench in the air, but nothing nauseating. Approaching the far door way, the deck is filled with cracks and broken boards, and seems to tilt down and away from the general list of the ship.
Through the doorway, Lia can see a book perched on the edge of a table, near an opening in the floor. (+15XP)

The arrow buries itself deeply into the body of the plant-creature. (-8HP) The vine horrors advance. One of the remaining ones makes it onboard the ship, but the last one slips and falls back into the sargasso. Lia swipes at the one coming through the rails, but her attack just barely misses. The uninjured vine horror moves to flank Tamaska, but it still misses. The remaining vine horrors attack James, Kit and Tamaska. James' armor deflects one of the attacks, but the followup hits him hard (-10HP). Kit fares better, nimbly side stepping each of the flailing attacks. Tamaska likewises manages to dodge and even snaps at one of the tentacles, but misses. James moves his daggers with lightning speed. Unfortunately, the malleable body of the vine horror easily avoids both daggers. Gandt attacks the most injured of the vine horrs. Unfortunately, he to misses. Kit tumbles away from his opponent and comes up with a little stabity-stabity action flanking with Gandt. He skewers the vine horror (-9HP). Lia swings again, slicing the newcomer (-5HP). Tamaska goes for the kill, and finishes off one of the vine horrors. Round 4: Illyria fires again, this time at the vine horror she and James had previous targeted. The mad Ninja skills return as Illyria's arrow blasts right through the vine horror (-18HP). The vine horrors continue their assault. The last one still has trouble climbing the side of the ship (maybe he's related to Lia?). Lia's foe misses her with both strikes, leaving himself open to a counter attack, that barely scratches (-2HP). Tamaska's foe hits the wolf hard with one attack (-10HP) while the other misses. Kit's foe chases after him, but the tiefling's armor holds up under both attacks. James isn't so lucky, as he gets hit hard twice (-16HP). James attacks, sinking both daggers into plant flesh, the vine horror goes down (+1 kill). Gandt attacks the vine horror attacking Tamaska. Bits and pieces of plant flesh go flying. (-17HP) Kit turns to attack the vine horror that pursued him. The plant's flesh easily bends to dodge the attack. Lia swipes at her foe again. She leaves an oozing gash in the plant flesh (-8HP). Tamaska leaps at remaining horror attacking him, but he can't get a solid hold. Init: Illyria: 24, -4 arrows Vine Horrorsx4: 17 (-15, -26) James: 14, -26HP Gandt: 13, -1HP Kit: 8 Lia: 6, -1 arrow, tamaska -2HP (new actions?) The crew seem to be faring okay, a couple have backed off, nursing injuries, but 2 vine horrors are dead on the deck and only one is currently on the deck, engaged in melee with Amelia and Skald.

Illyria fires another arrow, targeting the vine horror facing off against Gandt. The arrow misses, skips off the deck, and out into the darkness.
The vine horrors continue their assault. The one on the ground finally manages to climb onboard (between Illyria and Gandt, but out of Gandt's reach). Lia takes one hit from her opponent (-13HP), while Kit gets hit for a little less (-10HP). Tamaska takes a blow (-9HP) as well.
James drops back to midships and sheathes his daggers.
Gandt strikes hard, pummelling the weakened vine horror into a pulp (+1 kill).
Kit stabs his foe, and then takes a step back towards James (-8HP).
Lia steps around her foe, but for swiping at it. She misses. Tamaska can't move to flank without leaving himself open to attack, so he snaps at the vine horror and then steps back a little. (-4HP).
Round 6:
Illyria fires again, and again she misses.
The vine horrors press their attack. The horror attack Lia stumbles, and she makes a quick strike against it (-8HP). The newly arrived vine horror turns and advances on Illyria. The ninja easily dodges both attacks. The final vine horror pursues Kit. He gets pummeled (-24HP).
James readies and loads his crossbow.
Gandt moves to defend Kit. He hits the horror hard (-17HP).
Kit tumbles away, coming to stand next to James.
Lia presses her attack. She nearly slices off an arm. (-14HP). Tamaska, now free to assist, sprints over to flank with Lia. He sinks his wolfy teeth in, finishing off the vine horror.

The vine horrors continue their assault. Illyria easily twists and dodges from her attacker, while can't manages to keep the vine horror assaulting him at bay with a well placed shield bash. The vine horror collaspes to the deck, dead (+1 kill).
James fires his crossbow at the remaining horror, but misses. He quickly reloads.
Gandt thunders across the deck and up the stairs after the remaining vine horror, flanking it with Illyria. He strikes out with his shield, but misses horribly.
Kit drinks a potion, a number of his smaller wounds close up completely (+8 HP). He then moves to assist Gandt.
Lia moves up to James and lays her hand on him. A large number of his wounds close up (+17HP).
Round 8:
Illyria takes a step back and draws her shortsword, before suddenly disappearing.
The remaining vine horror, confused by Illyria's sudden disappearance turns and attempts to close with Gandt. It manages to do so, but both of its attacks bounce harmlessly off of Gandt's armor.
James moves to get a clear shot, before firing again. Again he misses.
Gandt steps back and slams his shield out again. Bits and pieces of plantlike flesh go flying once again (-16HP).
Kit darts up the stairs, tumbling past the vine horror then turning to stab it. He plunges the rapier down to the griffon head into the vine horror, before kicking off and pulling the blade out (-16HP).
Lia can't make it to Kit, so she instead fires an arrow at the vine horror. She nails the creature, but not enough to drop it (-7HP).

Illyria strikes out with her sword, reappearing as the blade nearly cleaves the thing in two. (+1 kill)

It narrowly misses the vine horror on the right and sails off into the forest. The vine horrors approach to within 15 feet of the party. Suddenly, three large vines of kelp peel off of nearby trees. (Assassin vines) Gandt steps forward, and strikes with his shield. The vine horror manages to dodge. Round 1: Illyria fires again. The vine horror is hit this time, spurting some greenish sap (-6HP). James fires his crossbow at the same Vine Horror Illyria targeted. His attack isn't quite as powerful (-2HP). He quickly holsters his crossbow. Kit attempts to hide. Unfortunately, he's spotted as he ducks behind a kelp tree. Lia manages to hide behind a kelp tree, while Tamaska is spotted as he tries to hide. The vine horror closest to Gandt tries to close. He gets inside Gandt's defenses but he can't manage to actually hit the towering half-merrow. The two other vine horrors close in on James. Somehow the half-drow manages to avoid all but 1 of the attacks, and its little more than a bruise (-5HP). The assassin vines attack, two of them targeting Gandt. One of them tries to grab him, but Gandt easily deflects the grapple attempt. The other one attacks, only to be blocked by Gandt's shield. The third assassin vine tries to grapple Illyria. The assassin vine grabs Illyria and begins to tighten (-8HP). Gandt steps back and attacks the Vine Horror. Again he misses. Round 2: Illyria manages to break free of the grapple. Kit tries to hide again. Again he fails. James draws his daggers and drops into a defensive posture. "What are you doing?" he yells at Kit. "Get back here and help us." Lia fires an arrow from hiding. It hits, and the vine horror spins around, but is unable to spot Lia (-5HP). Tamasaka tries to hide but fails. The vine horrors advance again. The front one closes on Gandt again, and again he slips inside Gandt's guard. One of the slams hit, and it hurts (-10HP). The two assassin vines strike at Gandt again but both miss. The two central vine horrors again concentrate on James, matching his movements to continue their flank. James takes another pop (-6HP). The remaining assassin vine tries to grapple Illyria again. Again it wraps her up (-13HP). Gandt strikes out. Finally he hits, but its not the strongest of attacks (-14HP). James attacks with his daggers. He manages to land a single, light slice (-3HP). Kit moves toward Illyria, circling around the Vine Horrors attacking James. He doesn't quite make it to her. Lia fires again, again nailing the Vine Horror (-4HP). Strange sap-like blood begins welling up from the wound (-6 bleed). The Vine Horror spots her this time. Tamaska finally succeeds in hiding. The vine horrors just keep on fighting. Gandt takes a minor slam (-7HP), while James gets pummelled (-20HP) by the two attacking him. A little more sap spills out of the wound of the vine horror Lia attacked (-4HP). The assassin vines facing Gandt try to grab him. Gandt manages to bash one of them with his shield (-12HP), but the second manages to grab hold and constrict tightly (-7HP). The remaining assassin vine once again grabs hold of Illyria and constricts tightly (-10HP). Gandt busts free from the Assassin vine, and shreds it with his shield and armor in the process. Round 4: Illyria struggles to get free, but can't. Kit runs over to help Illyria, but even the two of them together can't get her free. James retreats. Lia fires again. She hits again (-7HP). Tamaska charges out from hiding. He takes a bite out of Lia's target (-6HP). The vine horror falls to the ground, dead. The remaining assassin vine harrassing Gandt suddenly stops moving. The vine horrors continue their attack. Gandt manages to avoid the blows headed his way, while James does likewise after the remaining vine horror closes. The assassin vine loses its grip on the slippery ninja. (Whoops, just realized I forgot Gandt's 4th round attack.) Gandt attempts to lay the pain on the vine horror, now that the assassin vines are out of the way. Bits and pieces of plant like flesh go flying (-19HP). James steps back and drinks his CLW potion. A few of his wounds close up (+8HP). Kit gives the assassin vine a little poke (-4HP). Lia scampers over to James and casts her spell, healing a significant portion of James' remaining wounds (+10HP). Tamaska darts in and attacks the vine horror closes to James, but the vine horror dodges the snapping jaws. The vine horrors continue their assault, and as they do so a new strand of kelp springs to life and attempts to grab Gandt. Gandt finds himself grabbed and constricted (-10HP). It takes a few minor cuts from Gandt's armor spikes (-2HP). With Gandt pre-occupied, the vine horror circles around and closes in on Tamaska. The wolf takes a hard hit (-7HP), but manages to avoid the worst of it. The second vine horror moves to flank Tamaska. Somehow, the nimble canine darts and dodges without taking a single hit. The remaining assassin vine attempts to grab Illyria. Illyria scampers to the side unharmed. Gandt roars with rage and doesn't really do anything else as the assassin vine holds him tight. Round 6: Illyria vanishes again before attacking the assassin vine. She trips on the rough terrain, causing her sword to go flying, narrowly missing Kit. James, feeling much better now, moves to flank with Tamaska. He too slips, and winds up prone. Kit finishes off the assassin vine with a flourish, before picking up Illyria's sword and tossing it to her. Lia circles around the mass of opponents and moves closer to Gandt. Tamaska steps out of the flank and attacks the weaker looking of the two vine horrors, but misses. Gandt manages to slip away from the assassin vine as hit tries to tighten around him. The vine horrors split, one going for Tamaska and one going for the prone James. Tamaska avoids both blows, while the second vine horror slips and falls, narrowly missing James. Some of the creatures appear to have internal organs similar to those of humanoids. Kit supposes its possible these creatures could have once been humanoids, now possessed by some sort of plant like parasite, or they could simply be mobile plants that resemble humanoids in shape. Gandt sets about healing the party. The first wand is finished off before Gandt has fully healed Illyria, and it takes two charges from the second to heal her complete. Healing James is a little easier, as it only takes 1 charge. Patching up Tamaska takes 4 more charges, but healing himself only takes 3. Gandt then uses the mage armor wand on Illyria (+4 AC for 1 hour). Gandt then looks around, and quickly regaining his bearings (+25XP). Another hour of travel brings the party to a large clearing in the forest, at least a mile wide east-west and twice that north-south. Halfway across the clearing stands a ship, while another ship lies north of that, near the north end of the clearing. The clearing is refreshingly bright after the dismal forest of kelp, but the sun is sinking to the west, behind the party. (There's about 3 hours of sunlight left, but if the past night was any indication, the thick fog will begin rolling in within 2 hours.)

"I think you're right Lia, I think this 'Mother' is here." It's now quite obvious to everyone that vine horrors are litterally oozing up out of the sargasso. None of them have fully emerged, but the undulating, shifting sight is disturbing to say the least. The party quickly heads below decks, where the continued good shape of the ship is somewhat at odds with the other wrecks the party has seen. Here and there strands of kelp-like vines grow, but for the most part the hallways are clear, except for a few skeletons of the long dead crew, and broken weapons. The party continues to make their way below decks, weaving around the narrow hallways and decending into the hold. Numerous crates, some of them half rotted fill the hold, with coins and goods spread out throughout the area. An enormous steel shield depicting sharks devouring men men stands out in sparkly contrast to the otherwise filth covered goods. With a roar, the Mother of All attacks Gandt with its teeth and flailing vines. The bite misses, but the two vines flay the half-merrow (-20HP). Lia attempts to conjure some fire. The constant screeching and roaring causes her to lose her concentration and the spell fizzles out. Tamaska holds position. Round 2: Illyria pulls the disappearing and re-appearing act again. The arrow bounces harmlessly off the Mother of All. Kit fires two arrows. His first barely penetrates as well (-1HP), while the second misses to the right. James fires his crossbow. The bolt bounces away. Gandt tries to wallop the mother. Its a pathetic attempt, that seems almost laughable. The Mother of All grabs at Gandt. The vines grab hold. Lia, frustrated by the loss of her spell, fires an arrow at the Mother of All, barely missing both the creature and Gandt. Init: Illyria: 25 Kit: 20 James: 16 Gandt: 8, -20HP Mother of All: 8, -4HP Lia: 5 Actions? If so, she will use Invisibility/Sudden Strike to fire into the creature's mouth . If not, normal bow attacks on the exterior.

Kit readies an arrow but holds his position. James attempts to cast a spell, but fumbles the words due to the screeching. Gandt struggles, but can't get free. His armor spikes don't seem to be hurting the creature either. The Mother of All opens her mouth to bite Gandt. Almost instantaneously four arrows leap out, two from Illyria and two from Kit. Illyria's first arrow buries itself deep in the back of the MoA's throat (-19HP), while the second deflects harmless off a tooth. One of Kit's arrows hits home, but barely penetrates (-2HP), while the second hits Gandt (-6HP). The sudden pain causes the MoA to lose her grip on Gandt. One of the infant vine horrors takes a swipe at Gandt, but the half-merrow dodges the blow. Gandt lands on his feet, and takes the opportunity to lunge with the his shield at the MoA. Somehow he misses, and narrowly avoids toppling into the pit. Lia fires a arrow. She strikes the MoA, but the damage is minimal (-2HP). Round 4: James fires a bolt at the MoA, but misses. Gandt tries another shield slam. Again he misses. Illyria vanishes again (by my count, she has one ki left now) and readies an arrow. Kit readies his arrow as well. The MoA appears to have learned her lesson, and doesn't open her mouth this time, instead reaching out to grab Gandt again. Illyria and Kit fire again, the the combined damage is minimal (-3HP). Gandt strikes out at the reaching arms, missing, but managing to avoid being grabbed. Lia fires another arrow, missing horribly. Once the creature takes about 50 damage or more, Kit will switch to his rapier, Tumble in, then begin to stab the creature as many times as possible (extra attacks too) for the remainder of the fight. If he gets grabbed, Escape Artist to escape. If he gets hurt badly, Tumble away and fighting defensively/combat expertise until he can get healed. Realizing that his usual "hit everything till it dies" tactic isn't working, Gandt pulls out his slashing shield. He touches it to his forehead a moment, almost as if in prayer. Then, he hurls it like a discus at the behemoth's neck. Regardless of the outcome, he then takes Total Cover and backs up, looking for a better plan of attack. If it lowers its head to attack someone near him, he drops his guard and tries to skewer the head with his darkwood shield. Otherwise he'll use his Barkskin potion before trying anything else. "Damn" he mutters. Illyria vanishes from sight again. Kit fires a couple more arrows, the first of which manages to find its way into a senstive spot (-15HP). Some sap like liquid begins flowing from the wound (-1 con). The second arrow is little more than a scratch (-1HP). The Mother of All Screams in response to Kit's attack, giving Illyria and opportunity to attack. She unleashes both arrows in rapid succession, actually managing to inflict some damage on the creature (-14HP). Gandt appears to kiss his shield, before flinging it at the Mother of All. The shield whistles oddly as it flies through the air before slicing into the vinelike body. An infant vine horror is actually cut clean off of the body (-18HP, -4 bleed). The shield comes to rest near the back of the hold, about 5 feet from the hole. The Mother of All attacks Gandt with all her fury. Gandt cowers behind his shield, and luckily none of the attacks penentrate. The Mother off All roars in frustration, and from outside the ship, answers cries can be heard faintly. Lia tries to rattle off another spell, but the attempt is lost as the echoing din causes her to lose her concentration. Round 6: James fires another bolt. It bounces harmlessly off the plant like skin. Kit tumbles in, trying to drive his rapier into the Mother of All's body. He slides in just under the dashing arms, and attacks. The rapier pierces the outer vine layers like it was passing through butter (-9HP). Kit tries for a second stab, but his aim is off. A bit more of the sap like liquid leaks from Kit's earlier arrow strike (-1 con) Illyria fires a pair of arrows. Her aim is way off. Gandt drinks his barkskin potion. (+3 natural AC, one hour). A bit more of the creatures blood spurts from the wound caused by the shield. (-8HP) The Mother screams in fury, but the scream is cut short as she coughs up a large amount of sap. An infant vine horror strikes out at Kit (-3HP), as the Mother of All begins to tumble backwards, she makes one last desperate attempt to attack, striking Kit hard with one of her claws (-11HP), before she falls into the pit with a wail that seems to be matched by the creatures outside. As she falls, she turns from green, to brown, and begins to shrivel. Likewise, the vines lining the pit begin to turn to brown, and the ship shudders as its weight suddenly shifts. "Let's get out of here!" James yells and begins running back the way the party came. Gandt hastily grabs his shield and follows behind. As the party arrives on the deck, the ship is already beginning to sink into the rapidly deteroriating sargasso. Hundreds if not thousands of vine horrors lie scattered about, writhing and shrieking as their life force is drawn from their bodies. The ship gives massive shudder, and the mast snaps off, nearly landing on Illyria. "Oh fuck!" James yells, as he dodges shattered pieces of railing and mast. As the sargasso continues dying, the ship sinks faster and faster. Here and there on the horizon great blasts of geysers erupts as the sea reclaims the space once claimed by the kelp forest. It's over in mere moments, but it seems to take an eternity for the seas to finally calm. Luckily, the break up of the Thunderer provided plenty of floating wood for support. Tamaska even manages to climb aboard a floating door. Slowly, and steadily, the light drains from the sky as night falls over what's left of the sargasso. EXP earned: James: 725, Rest: 630
