Shining his flashlight into the new room, he discovers a catwalk suspended over a room some 20 ft. deep or so. It's loaded with large machinery. It may be some kind of boiler room, but most of the machinery has a modern look. There is a set of stairs on the far end of the room leading down to the bottom, and another door at the end of the catwalk. Joe can see a couple pipes run up past the catwalk.
The catwalk is 30 ft. long.

...and produces a loud "clang" noise.
The shapes suddenly bolt across the room. Joe can see them amassing beneath him. As he watches, he spots the shapes reaching for the two pipes that reach up to the catwalk and into the ceiling.
It looks like the shapes are climbing up the pipes to reach the catwalk!

There is a lock on the door, but it appears to be a key-only lock. Joe doesn't have the key, so he just runs through the door and shuts it and hopes the zombies don't think about chasing the athlete. He spins around and...
Finds himself standing in a dark corridor. The cold, concrete walls of the maintenance tunnels have been replaced with white linoleum floors and drab drywall. There are numerous doors up and down the hall, but more importantly to Joe, there are also numerous zombies filling the corridor, roughly 5-10 ft. apart from eachother. They seem to be gathered in this particular section of this corridor. Joe doesn't see any zombies further down.
Joe also spots Crane: she is sitting on the ground and leaning against a wall right next to what appears to be an elevator. She sits very still and doesn't appear to notice the zombies surrounding her. They are ignoring her.
There are no special zombies. A couple turn to face Joe and sniff at him.

Joe begins to tread the corridor, passing sniffing zombies and occasionally working his way around them. As he approaches Crane, he shines his flashlight in her direction. Her nightvision goggles are down. When the light hits her face, she jerks away, then begins to rise to her feet. The zombies near her take notice and begin to sniff, but they don't get hostile. They sniff Joe when he gets closer...
One zombie must have caught Joe's scent because it suddenly groans and reaches for the athlete. It reaches for Joe's arm and succeeds in grabbing him, then tries to pull Joe in for a bite. Crane jumps to her feet, but there are so many zombies near her, she is forced to hack one's head off before she can come to Joe's aid.
Joe is standing in a 10 ft. wide corridor. There are 3 zombies within 10 ft. of him and one has got a hold of his right arm, and 5 more zombies gathered around Crane. He is 20 ft. away from Crane and the elevator. There are a couple doors within 20 ft, but all our shut.

Pulling away from the zombie proves to be a trivial matter. He easily knocks it aside, then spins around with a bada$$ spinning hack. As impressive as it looked, the attack is little more than a light gash (-4 HP).
The zombie tries to grab Joe again. As it does so, it attracts the attention of the other nearby zombies. They turn and join in the gang-bang, but Joe dances around their outstretched hands like the pro he is.
Crane sends another head rolling before diving through the gang of zombies gathered around her. She makes her way towards Joe. "I'm surprised you made it back, but not without some problems, I see. I got the elevator door open. Go that way."
But first, Joe has do so something about the zombies reaching for him, and only him; Crane remains safe from attacks. Some give her an odd look when she hacks another head off, but they can't get past her revolting smell. Another hack to the face on the first zombie to grab Joe knocks it back (-5 HP), but the other two continue to be a pain. Joe dodges them all, but this scuffle has attracted the attention of all zombies in the corridor. 5 more get within 20 ft. of Joe.

chiapet chiapet Member Full Members October 2009 edited October 2009 Joe tries to break away and tumble toward the elevator to escape.
"Ran into a nasty trio of slashers earlier," he says to Crane. "Is it just the stench that allows you to stay hidden, or something else?" Savage Tide Info TGBarighm TGBarighm Member Full Members October 2009 edited October 2009 DYNETECH: DyneTech Sub-Basement (Sub-basement Corridor) ====================================================== Conditions: dark, humid, rotten-smell
Joe pushes the zombies aside and attempts to push past them. He manages to get past 3 before he finds himself being slowed by grasping hands. He is 10 ft. away from the elevator and only 3 zombies between him and the doors. Thankfully, none of the zombies succeed at getting a grip on him.
Crane sends another head rolling. "I'm quick. I'm quiet. I'm discreet. Zombies can still smell me, but when they do, I make sure it's the last thing they do."
Crane helps clear a path for Joe with another rolling head. This makes it easier for Joe to break through the zombies and reach the elevator, but not well enough to completely avoid the zombies (doesn't make a difference; they can't grab him). Crane follows and the two find themselves peering into the darkened elevator shaft. The doors are opened and the elevator is nowhere in sight. Looking up, Joe can see a steel beam stretching around the perimeter of the shaft. It's about 5 ft. above Joe's head.
"I need a boost. The generator is up there," Crane points at a pair of closed doors above their head.
With the zombies advancing, Joe has to quickly grab Crane's foot and, thankfully, has little trouble pushing her up high enough to reach the beam. She hauls herself up, then reaches down to pull Joe into shaft. He is amazed by her strength. The zombies spill into the shaft, fall, and slam into the bottom.
With Joe's help, Crane has little trouble climbing up to the closed doors above and prying them open with her hatchet.

The two now find themselves standing in another corridor, not much different from the previous one. To Joe's left, a security door has been installed in the middle of the corridor. A desk and chair sit before the door. To Joe's right, the corridor stretches into the darkness. There is no sign of zombies or the electrical lines, but there is a sign on the wall with a "shock" symbol and an arrow.
"I couldn't hear you earlier, but did you say you encountered a trio of slashers?" Crane asks. Her emotionless nightvision goggles and gas-mask can't hide the curious tone in her voice.

There is no obvious response Joe can read, but he gets the feeling Crane's mouth must have dropped open behind that mask. After a moment, she begins heading in the direction the "shock" sign indicated. "You will only find slashers deep within buildings," she suddenly calls back. "They will come out to chase you, but they usually hide. It almost feels like...they have a purpose."
Joe looks around the corridor with his flashlight. He does spot a fire-extinguisher affixed to a wall. Further down the corridor, he can see box of some sort sticking out of the wall and coloured red, a common sign of fire-fighting equipment.
chiapet chiapet Member Full Members October 2009 edited October 2009 Joe will grab the extinguisher and stop to examine the box to see what its contents hold. Savage Tide Info TGBarighm TGBarighm Member Full Members October 2009 edited October 2009 The two continue down the hall until they reach a pair of double-doors marked with that "shock" symbol they have been seeing. Joe takes the fire-extinguisher, but has to run past the double-doors to reach the red box. It turns out to be a square-niche for a firehose and a fire-axe. "Break glass in case of emergency" is marked in red letters on the glass covering the niche.
Crane, not interested in waiting for Joe, enters the room with the double-doors.

Joe follows Crane through the double-doors and finds himself standing in a fairly large room filled with every kind of pipe and wiring you could find in a hardware store. It also features all sorts of electrical equipment, not the least of which is a huge, box-like machine with a round case sitting next to it. This must be the generator. Crane is already examining a set of instructions on the side of the generator, and after a few moments, begins to activate the machine. There is little risk in doing so, and the two get the machine going in fairly short order. It stutters and begins roaring to life before settling into a light hum. The lights in the room flicker for a moment before stabilizing, and a number of other lights for other machines flick on too.
And then an alarm goes off. A small box on top of the two doors suddenly extends a little steel rod over the doors to prevent entry and exit into the room.
Crane curses, pulls off her goggles then runs up to the doors. She tries to pull them open, but they bang on the little rods. "Damn it! The military shot down some plane and it crashed into the eastern side of this building. The security system must have interpreted that as a break in."
Crane is interrupted by another roar, this one not mechanical. It sounds like it came from something in the corridor...

Savage Tide Info TGBarighm TGBarighm Member Full Members October 2009 edited October 2009 Joe looks around and does a pretty good job. He discovers a special, but very heavy, battery tucked within a cabinet. It is about twice the size of a car battery, but it doesn't look like any battery Joe has seen before. It's easily more than 60 lbs. but could fit in his backpack. Looking at the volts and amps printed on the side, he can't say for sure how good the battery is, but the numbers are much higher than the standard car battery.
As for a way out...there is a Hollywood-style, suspiciously-wide-enough-to-fit-an-entire-person sized vent in the back of the room. It runs both to the left and right.
"Can't you just use your shotgun to blow the rods out of the way?" Crane asks from the doors. chiapet chiapet Member Full Members October 2009 edited October 2009 "You want to fight the thing that made that noise?" Joe asks as he stuffs the battery into his backpack. Savage Tide Info TGBarighm TGBarighm Member Full Members October 2009 edited October 2009 "Who said anything about fighting?" The battery causes Joe's backpack to go from fairly light to heavy in a hurry.

It doesn't matter in the end. The door is opened all the same. He finds himself standing in a small room with a desk in it. There's a computer on the desk with a touch-pad lying before it. On the far wall is a pair of filing cabinets. A bunch of discs and cables sit on top of the cabinet. But that's the boring part. The desk sits before a large window into the next room. The room is filled with complicated machinery, including two large robotic arms. One arm has a circular saw mounted on the end of it, and the other what appears to be a glue-gun with a lens on the end (but it's not really a glue gun, it just looks like one). The robotic arms surround a table sitting below them. On the desk is a baseball-sized crystal held in place with a couple pins. The door to this room is just to Joe's right. It's not locked. "If we're stealthy enough, we can escape without anymore harm." Crane leads Joe to a stairwell and tells him they're looking for any way out of the Dynetech building. They climb up one flight to the first floor, but they discover the door to the first floor bulging out of the frame. Cracks run through the wall, and flecks of concrete spill out of the crack between the door and the frame. Needless to say, the door can't be opened. "Rubble," Crane announces. "This must be where the plane crashed. Maybe we can get down from the 2nd floor." Unfortunately, the second floor isn't much better. This time there is no door, just a great big hole in the wall. Joe thinks he can make out the general structure of the building, but there is so much rubble he can't be too sure. They probably could jump down from here, but there is a huge cluster of zombies occupying this area for some reason. Crane grumbles something, then they move on. The third floor is also messed up, but the fourth floor proves to be safe enough to enter. The door, for some reason, is hanging limply in its frame. The two now find themselves in an office area. Joe can see a small corridor running to his right and a series of doors to every office and some windows overlooking the city. The door to the office directly in front of them is open and they can see another door to a hall beyond it. But even more curious is the hole in the ceiling directly above them. It doesn't look like it was caused by rubble. More like someone smashed through. And with that discovery comes a loud thumping noise above them. Crane ducks down and pulls Joe with her. Looking up through the hole, they can see the massive muscles of a strong zombie pass by. Even more disturbing, a second strong zombie follows shortly after. "Oh, crap," Crane mutters. "Okay, these doors are probably sealed by the security system, but they don't look very sturdy. I'm sure we can force them open. But those zombies will hear us if we do...we need to be smart about this." MAP: (Not all doors are locked. The massive fist of the strong zombie smashes into the carpeted floor of the office. Cracks spider up the walls next to the bulging fist, and the zombie's horrible breath assaults Joe's nose. The former athlete turned zombie-survivor-hero gasps and scrambles away from the hulking beast as it winds up for another devastating blow.
The insultingly smelly Crane suddenly appears behind Joe and fires her pistol at the zombie's face. A bullet strikes an eye causing the zombie to roar and rear back. Joe grabs Crane's hand, her nightvision goggles now up on her forehead, and the athlete is pulled up to his feet. The two race down the office corridor until they discover a door into another room. They also discover a huge hole in the floor right before the door.
Crane doesn't hesitate to leap across, her feet landing on the very narrow strip of intact floor directly before the door. She grabs the handle and turns...
...but it's locked!
Crane howls a curse while Joe looks back to their pursuer. The strong zombie has recovered from its pain and has begun to charge down the corridor, both of its arms held out and smashing every single wall and door that meets them.
"Hurry!" Joe shouts.
Crane fires on the doorhandle until it's a twisted image of its former self, then the Asian acrobat whips the door open and dives through. Joe, with the strong zombie closing fast, attempts to leap across the hole, but the strong zombie covers the seemingly comfortable distance far quicker than the athlete expects, and its arm whips out at Joe's backpack just as the beast goes crashing by.
The sausage-sized fingers close on Joe's backpack for mere seconds, and the beast doesn't end up getting a good grip on the athlete, but it's enough to completely kill Joe's momentum. He flounders in mid-air above the hole, kicks his feet out to gain a foothold, anything, to stop his fall. He reaches out to grab the open door handle, but it's useless. He can't reach...
Crane's hand shoots out and grabs the grasping athlete's hand. She pulls him up to the door. As she does, the strong zombie reappears and crashes around the corner, but it doesn't notice the hole in the floor. Fear never shows up on its face as it begins to fall, only the unbridled hatred for whatever it is Joe and Crane did to offend it. It reaches up to grab the now crumbling floor. With one hand maintaining the entirety of its weight, the beast begins to slowly haul itself up.
Crane calmly walks up to the beast. Its face drawing ever closer, she draws her hatchet and throws her arm back. She then glances at Joe.
"Have you ever seen a flying zombie in a movie?" she asks. Joe shakes his head.
"You hear that, you crazy brute? You will be the first," Crane quips as she brings her hatchet down on the strong zombie's fingers. It falls away, crashing into the ground and spraying debris.
Crane kicks the fingers away before closing the door. "Let's get moving before the second one figures out what happened."
The two race through a second set of offices, this one open and featuring few doors, until they discover a messed up door. Debris and daylight flow through the opened door, and a slight breeze blows. The two enter this room and discover the entire wall has been taken out by a construction crane. The control booth lies in a smashed heap further into this ruined section of the office. The length of steel bars and girders formerly supporting the crane run the length of the street to the construction project on the other side.
As for this section of the building, its a complete wreck. There are desks, filing cabinets, chairs, and all sorts of paper lying all over the place, but it's no longer easy to tell exactly what this room was used for before the crane smashed into it. There is no other exit or obvious way to advance into the building from here. Looks like the crane-crossing is the only way.
"Good, we can cross here," Crane announces. "That plane must have hit the crane on the way down. If we can cross over to that building on the corner from that construction site, we will be a short jog away from the military outpost. You're not afraid of heights, are you?"

Crane nods. "Stay in front of me."
The crane fell from the top of the project, so it's bent at an angle, but it's not so steep the two have a great deal of difficulty climbing. Crane suggests they climb on top of the crane's support. The entire structure is wider than Joe and Crane, so they don't have much trouble getting across. It's very stable and not that windy.
Joe now gets a clear view of the area. He can clearly see the wreckage of the plane that crashed into the Dynetech building. The tail sticks out of a massive charred hole in the street-side of the building. Everything after that is just debris. Joe wonders why the building hasn't collapsed.
The plane also smashed into another building across the way, filling the street and the alleys between them with more debris. Looking to his left, Joe can see the river and the other building Crane mentioned. It is a dark, unremarkable, 6 storied building, but it is very close to the construction project. There should be a way across.
And then there are the zombies. The street is filled with them. Must have been quite a meal after that plane crashed.
But even more curious is the sign at the top of the construction project. Someone has wrapped a bunch of christmas lights around a web of wire to form the word "SOS". The lights are currently blinking on and off. When the two finally reach the construction project and jump down, Crane draws her gun and hatchet.
"I don't see anyone up here. Be careful," she warns.
She's right. There isn't a living soul in sight. The supports for the crane are a twisted mess at this point. They can see the foundation of the crane protruding from a large, square hole in the center of the project. Most of this floor doesn't have any flooring, save for the small area Joe and Crane are, so they look over the side to the next floor. It appears to have much more flooring available, and a number of tools lying around.
There is nothing else they can do, so they jump down to the next floor. They now stand next to a construction elevator, and it is currently on their floor, but for some reason, the buttons have been smashed. Immediately nearby is a pile of lumber with a bucket filled with tools sitting on top of it. Mostly pencils, a hammer, screwdrivers, and the like. Further on, they can see more tools scattered around the floor.
They suddenly hear something fall nearby. Something metallic.
Crane frowns. "Look for a way across. Don't let your guard down."

Crane begins stealthily sneaking her way to the right, so Joe takes the left. He walks the length of the pile of lumber and passes a couple concrete columns. He has begun to approach the northeastern corner of the building, where a ladder is standing next to an opening in the unfinished building. Sitting on the ground a few feet to his right is a coil of wiring. A couple columns partially block his view to the rest of the floor.
He peers out of the opening at the building. Looking down, he doesn't see a safe way to cross, although one of the windows are broken on the third floor if Joe feels like risking a jump across. He can see an open door to the other building on the ground floor which will be a lot safer, but Joe will have to get all the way to the bottom. There doesn't appear to be any zombies down there. He will also have to climb a fence, but that shouldn't be a big deal...assuming he isn't rushed.
Joe jumps when a loud noise suddenly erupts behind him. He spins around, no weapon in hand at the moment because of all the climbing, and looks around. He doesn't see anything, but it sounds like someone has turned an electric tool on very nearby and has left it running. chiapet chiapet Member Full Members April 2010 edited April 2010 (can joe identify what kind of tool from where he is?) Yeah, I remember you didn't have much revolver ammo in the first place and you used up the shells on the 3 slasher encounter.
No doorways or intersections in the unfinished building, but the pile of lumber and concrete supports do form a hall of sorts. He backs away a bit, then peers around the side of one support to see what's going on.
There is a circular bench saw just on the other side of a concrete support near the corner of the building Joe just backed away from. Sitting next to it, closer to Joe, is a skid with a few steel beams forming a little pile. (Spot Success on 2; Perceptive) He spots movement just on the other side of the pile of beams, about 15 ft. away. Looks like someone is hiding behind it.
CURRENT ROOM:
deadcurrentroom.gif
chiapet chiapet Member Full Members April 2010 edited April 2010 Joe ducks behind the support beam, then peeks out for another look, if all seems clear, he moves to his left, behind the lumber, trying to get in a position to better see the source of the movement. Savage Tide Info TGBarighm TGBarighm Member Full Members April 2010 edited April 2010 (Btw, with the simplication of armor in the 33 rules, I've upgraded Joe's football gear to Heavy meaning he's armored and he looks like a guy in full football gear. Also, all guns deal AT LEAST 1 HP damage or 2 HP on a roll of 3. Stronger weapons, like shotguns at close range or rifles, deal 2 HP or 3 HP on a roll of 3) * * * * *
Joe peeks out. Now it looks like he can see the top of a person's head, but nothing else, so he quickly darts back to the lumber.
But it looks like this person has realized its ambush has been thwarted. When Joe falls back to the lumber, the person hiding behind the beams reveals himself. It steps over to the lumber-side of the supports and faces Joe. It looks like a construction worker of some sort. A Latin man wearing a bright orange vest and heavy jeans.
Well, he was a construction worker. The distinct signs of zombification are obvious to Joe: the guy's eyes are bloodshot, his skin pale, and his face filled with rage. The spark of intelligence still fills his eyes. This is a SMART zombie.
A portable circular saw fills something else: his hands. Joe can see the machine's cord on the ground heading towards the benchsaw. The worker switches on the circular saw, roaring to life and harmonizing with the benchsaw in a freaky way, before charging Joe.
chiapet chiapet Member Full Members April 2010 edited April 2010 joe heads back around the support beam, trying to get the smart zombie to follow him. If it does so, Joe continues going around the beams, trying to get the zombie to reach the end of the saw's cord. If it doesn't, and Joe can manuever to a position to cut the cord, he does that. Otherwise, he simply finds a defensible position and focuses on keeping the zombie from cutting him with the saw. Savage Tide Info TGBarighm TGBarighm Member Full Members April 2010 edited April 2010 * * * * *
Joe darts to his right. The smart zombie, committed to charging the athlete, gives chase, but Joe is definitely faster than the zombie and circles around the supports until he reaches the bench saw. He swings the axe at the cord and...
...misses! (Failure on 1) Joe winds up for another swing, this time splitting the cord (Success on 2; inanimate object...mostly).
The smart zombie, only a few steps behind Joe, attacks with the circular saw. The blade is still spinning at the moment, but Joe somehow manages to twist away at the last second (Zombie attack Failure on 1). It stumbles past Joe and crashes into the work bench. When it turns to Joe again, the blade has completely stopped spinning.
The two glance at the saw in unison. When the zombie looks up, it has a scowl on its face.
Crane suddenly lets out a wordless cry of alarm somewhere behind Joe. He can hear another power tool running, followed by a couple gunshots.
chiapet chiapet Member Full Members April 2010 edited April 2010 Joe will hack at the zombie with his axe, aiming for the shoulders in an attemp to "disarm" it. Savage Tide Info TGBarighm TGBarighm Member Full Members April 2010 edited April 2010 * * * * * *
The smart zombie swings the saw at Joe in an effort to thump him, but Joe is quicker and counters, but his swing is awkward (Failure on 2; smart zombies aren't slow). The saw bounces off Joe's armor.
The zombie now tries to push past Joe, but the athlete is quicker (Success on 3 for First Attack). Unfortunately, the zombie somehow manages to evade his grab (Failure on 1) and it moves past Joe and runs away. It tosses the saw aside. It appears to be heading towards the southeast corner of the building.

Joe runs back the way he came to where he first jumped down to this floor, then keeps going. He passes a few more supports and contruction materials. He also passes an abandoned sledgehammer. He eventually spots Crane ducking behind a pile of cement bags. A couple supports run the length of this area.
"Get down!" Crane orders. Joe sees no reason not to comply and does so...just in time to avoid something that strikes a nearby steel beam with a loud "PING!" noise. A bent nail falls to the ground.
"Bastard has a nailgun," Crane explains, then peeks over a bag of cement mix. Joe does the same as best he can and spots some scaffolding and two blue plastic barrels about 20 ft. away. Joe can see a yellow thing sticking out from behind one blue barrel. Looks like a hard hat.
"Think you can keep him busy while I get around him? Here, you can use my gun," Crane gestures to the beretta, "or do you think can get to him without getting shot?"
Layout: Similar to the last map actually, just flip it over like a mirror image, replace the pile of lumber with the bags of cement, add the barrels at 20 ft. away and it's roughly the same.

Joe takes Crane's gun and ducks behind the bag of cement mix. Crane suddenly darts away faster than even Joe expected and is nearly got caught flat-footed when she runs for a nearby support column. The smart zombie, a funny looking man with bushy hair, jumps up and fires on her.
Jack tries to shoot first, but Crane surprised him a bit (Failure on 1 for First Attack). The zombie fires on Crane and a nail streaks past her, then Joes fires on the zombie. It's not even looking at him, so he has little trouble popping it in the side (Success on 3; -2 HP).
The smart zombie groans, then ducks back down behind the plastic blue barrels. It doesn't look like it wants to jump out again, so Crane easily gets around the barrels and charges into the zombie. When it realizes what's going on, it dives away from the barrels and tries to flee, but Joe is ready for this, he knows smart zombies are cowards, and fire (Success on 2 for First Attack; Agile). He pops it in the side of the head, just below the hard hat, and the zombie collapses (Success on 3; -2 HP; zombie is downed).
Crane runs over to finish the zombie off, but realizes there is no need.
"Good shooting," Crane declares as she takes her gun back. "Now, you said there was another zombie? We should find it. Don't forget they like to call slashers and strong zombies for help."
This entire floor of the construction project has no walls, so Joe can tell the other smart zombie is nowhere in sight, but it could be hiding. He also spots a section of the southeastern floor is missing. They could jump down to the next floor if they wished. The broken window to the building they want to get to is on the 3rd floor.
The nail gun rests next to the zombie. It had 2 more clips for the gun. The nail gun doesn't deal an additional point of damage on a roll of 3, but it has a range of 30 ft.

Joe leads Crane to the area he saw the smart zombie run. Nothing else jumps out at Joe as they run, so it looks like there are no more zombies present on this floor. They pass numerous abandoned tools and power tools as they run.
When they reach the unfinished hole in the floor, maybe some kind of stairway or something, Crane jumps down without hesitation. She begins looking around and sprints somewhere out of sight.
Joe eventually follows and finds himself in an area surrounded by large, concrete walls for some reason. He can't see beyond the walls save for two future door openings. There is one to his left and to his right (the broken window in the other building is to his right). There is also a bucket filled with unused hardened cement nearby buy and a trowel.
Joe doesn't see Crane. She must have run through one of the doors, but...which one?

Crane nods like she was waiting for Joe's say-so, then presses on, but she only reaches a couple supports when a bucket of liquid is suddenly tossed on the two. The smell of turpentine fills Joe's nostrils. He spits out the liquid and looks for the source and spots the first smart zombie with the circular saw standing about 5 ft. away. It's holding a large white bucket.
But even more concerning is another smart zombie, this a large woman, just off to Joe's left lighting a blow torch...

Crane doesn't have a problem with it, so they run until they reach the window. The Molotov zombie spots them as they go and gives chase. When they reach the window, it's a long jump, Crane leaps and...
...nails it! There is still glass in the window, so she clears some away before climbing up.
Joe whistles, says a silent prayer to himself and...
...jumps!
He falls short! (Failure on 1)
Crane rapidly shoots a hand out and grabs Joe's before he can tumble to the hard pavement below.
"Come on! Haul yourself up here, you strong man," Crane says through gritted teeth. Her encouragements don't sound too genuine.
It's a struggle, but Joe manages to haul himself up with Crane's help (Success on 2; Strong).
Oh, but the zombies don't give up! The Molotov appears at the edge of the building and heaves the bottle...
...it's getting close! Joe and Crane leap out of the way.
Joe manages to get well away from the point of impact (Success on 3) as does Crane. The bottle smashes against the side of the building and sprays the area around the window somewhat. Only portions of the area by the window burn. The smart zombie points at them and...makes a weird noise.
Crane pulls her longcoat off and uses it to smother the flames before they become a problem, then backs away from the window.
"Come, you know they call for help, and slashers tend to hide in buildings," Crane explains as they look around.
They're in a lounge type area of some sort. At the far end of this corridor is another bend to the left, some 60 ft. away. Looks like he will eventually meet up with Crane.

Joe runs. He turns the bend in the hall and, much to his relief, encounters Crane.
"I found some stairs. What was that noise?"
Joe explains.
Crane's reaction is hidden by her face equipment. "Let's just get out of here."
They flee to the stairwell Crane mentioned, a very plain area with exposed concrete walls and floors, and head down. They can see all the way to the floor...
...and that's why they can see the evidence of a slaughterfest.
On the first and second floor stairs is the remains of scores of people...or zombies. They're kind of mixed up and it's hard to identify which is which, but there's piles of bodies littering the stairs all the way to a lighted area at the bottom, probably from a window. There is just as many guts and entrails thrown around as there is blood splashed about. It looks like a slaughterhouse, and smells just as bad.
Not only that, but they can also hear some activity below. Random scuffling noises and grunts of effort.
"What...the...?" Joe doesn't need to see Crane's face to know she must be shocked. "I...don't know what's happening, but we have to get out of here...unless you've got a better idea."

Joe has to pull out the fire extinguisher from his pack before the slasher zombie can attack. Let's just say he can't quite do that (Failure on 1 for first attack) and the slasher zombie leaps on him. Joe is a little too surefooted to be knocked to the ground, but he still has an ugly zombie attempting to cut him up with its protruding bones. The zombie's slashing hands catch Joe in the neck for a slight wound while the second spear-like bone strikes his football gear (Success on 3; Failure on 2 due to Joe's armor; -1 HP).
Crane jumps in and focuses her knife and hatchet on the zombie's head as she tends to do. Her hatchet strikes the zombie in the back of the neck, but hits a bone or something because it doesn't penetrate. Her knife catches it in the head (Critical Hit! Headshot. -3 HP damage).
Despite having a dagger sticking out of its head, the zombie keeps on slashing at Joe. He's not able to push it off him (Failure on 1). He gets scratched again (Same results as last time; -1 HP).
A second hack from Crane's hatchet severs the slasher's neck and sends its head bouncing down the stairs. Joe throws the corpse off him and feels his neck. He feels only a little bit...odd (Success on 2 for zombification status check; positive factor from Tough).
If the zombies weren't already groaning loudly, they would be at the smell of Joe bleeding (Zombie Success on 3 for blood scent check). They can see shadows moving around the bottom of the stairs.

Joe follows the long corridor filled with corpses until he enters a very large room. It appears to be the building's foyer. He is standing on the second floor of the foyer and looking down to the ground floor. Two large staircases ascend from the ground to the second floor, a number of dead looking potted plants ring the stairs and line the perimeter of a series of windows. These windows eventually lead to the doors exiting the building. This area appears to serve as a mini-mall of sorts because there are a number of stores and offices all around him, mostly business stuff like an accountant's office and a faxing/photocopying store. All of the doors to these places have been pried open or smashed.
To Joe's horror, he can see a dead dog, and pretty freshly killed at that, hanging by a length of extension cord in the middle of the foyer from a second floor balcony, just to his right. The dead dog is covered in blood. The doors on the ground floor are wide open. Not smashed. Not forced open. Just...open.
The owners' of the laughter appear to be two guys on the ground floor with large black boxes on their backs. They're definitely not zombies and they haven't seen Joe yet.

"No, can't be. It would have attacked."
"Hey stranger," the big guy calls out. "My name's Bob. This here is Doug. Care to join is in the zombie slaughter?"
"We're drawing them in," Doug calls out. "We've killed a bunch, but they're coming in heavy right now for some reason. I dunno why."
"Who cares why? That's more kills for us!" Bob shouts, then delivers an awkward high-five to Doug. "You want in on the action? Don't worry, we'll leave some kills for you two. Who is the weird Matrix-fanboy?"
Crane grits her teeth, then turns to Joe. "These guys think this is a game! They're going to get themselves killed."
"First aid kits? Yeah, we got a bunch over there," Bob points at an area Joe can't quite see at the moment. Somewhere on the first floor below the second set of stairs. "But we're not gonna just give them to you. You got something to help with the slaughter?"
"Don't think we have time to barter, Bob! The zombies are coming. Time to suit up and power up!" Doug calls with youthful glee.
He may be delusional, but Doug isn't lying about the zombies. The shadows of the undead are beginning to fill the doors exiting the building. Joe can also hear zombies from the stairwell he entered from.
Crane pulls out her beretta. "This looks very bad. I can't sneak past this many. Touching them is just as bad as being spotted. They can feel your warmth...or something."

First Aid kits (no surgery kits unfortunately), ammo for his shotgun and other weapons, a few berettas, a couple riot shotguns, a riot shield, a bullet proof vest, a bunch of clubs, a small pile of shock guns and batteries for them, and a lot of other useful things you can imagine being salvaged from an abandoned office building that may be useful during a zombie apocalypse. Unfortunately, Joe isn't sure how much time he has to enjoy this treasure trove of survival goodies: there are a lot of zombies building up at the doors. The doors are wide open, so they easily begin spilling in. So far it's just your every day zombie, but it's a LOT of zombies: 20 have entered the building and have begun to spill in and more are coming. A yell from Crane tells Joe there are more upstairs. But Bob and Doug don't seem concerned. In fact, they're laughing! "Lots of kills for everyone!" Bob shouts. "Yeah, we'll break our record easy," Doug replies with a chuckle. (Just fyi, Healing Kits alone restore 1 HP unless you have a Trait for it, then it's 2 HP. Surgery Kits improve that to 3 HP) *This is gonna need a big map. He runs upstairs to discover a bunch of zombies have begun to work their way down the corridor Joe used to enter the foyer area. Only 5 at the moment, but Joe can safely assume there are a lot more. Crane has her gun out but isn't firing. She has an odd look on her face like she is trying to figure something out. Bob starts his hedge trimmers and begins to cackle like a mad man. As the zombies on the ground pour in, he charges the lot. Doug begins firing his watergun, and being so big he sprays a lot of water all over the zombies. Although it's not obvious, electricity runs through the gun and strikes 5 zombies. All of them are shocked and collapse to the ground (Success rolls on 5 targets; Shock damage is an Instant Critical Hit! -2 HP damage to all affected targets and Stunned). Bob runs in and begins sawing the stunned zombies who are helpless to do anything about it (Auto Success on helpless targets; Helpless targets always take Critical Hits! -4 HP damage). The first of the zombies coming down the hall reach the two and Crane responds by lashing out with her hatchet. She buries the small axe in the zombie's neck and knocks it back a couple steps. She then steps back giving Joe all the time he needs to blast the sucker's chest to bits (Crane Success on 2; positive factor gained against slow moving zombies; Critical Hit! There has to be a way to stem the tide a bit," Crane shouts over the gunfire and Bob's maniacal cackling. Meanwhile, Bob begins swinging his hedgetrimmers at the zombies attempting to surround him. His first trimmer misses, but the second catches a zombie in the leg and tears away significant chunks of flesh (Success on 3; +1 damage bonus on rolls of 3; -3 HP damage total). Down the zombie goes. One of the new zombies filling into the corridor looks different from the rest. It's entire body appears to be swollen and it's skin is a deep shade of red (fyi, the replacement for the headless zombie). Bob and Doug weren't lying about cleaning up. She punctures the bag of blood, turns a dial, then tosses it into the pack of zombies. The zombies immediately go nuts, jumping on Crane's package like a pack of ravenous dogs. Nearly every zombie in the area focus on the thing, and those who can't get close try to fight those zombies that are close. The athlete easily dances around their grasping arms, then fires again. Another zombie goes flying. The tank begins plowing into the first group of zombies. The tank doesn't have much speed, so it bumps and shakes as it mows zombies down. Joe easily keeps his balance (Success on 3; he has been getting a lot of 3's lately). Now into the main group of the zombies, they really begin to hit the tank hard. A grand total of 8 zombies grab the tank and begin to climb up, and I'm not talking about the ones in the front (those zombies just get run over). Crane fires on the zombies on the left side, but 3 more are coming from the right side, and 3 more on the back where Joe is. MAP: (Crappy tank picture; I'm no artist. He scrambles up the tank to where Crane is, then begins grabbing shells from his pocket. He notes he has already used half of the shells he gathered. There is another sharp bump as the tank goes over a pile of zombies. Joe doesn't have to worry about balance this time, but it does nearly cause him to drop his current handful of shells. Thankfully, he's a quick one (Success on 2; Agile). A couple of zombies on the right side of the tank fall off, but 1 holds on. The 2 zombies on the back where Joe is hold on and are climbing up onto the tank. Joe is mighty quick at reloading that shotgun to its fullest capacity (Again thanks to Agile). I think it's safe to assume he fires on the two zombies climbing up the back after that seeing as how they're awfully close to him. The parade of 3's end: one zombie does get blown off, but Joe completely misses the second. The zombie Joe missed throws itself at him, but its clawing fingers and teeth can't find flesh and instead bounces off Joe's football gear. As this happens, Crane suddenly lets loose a cry. The one zombie that got up on the right side is now attacking her. She manages to push it away, then turns the machine gun on it, but somehow misses. The zombies on the left side of the tank, previously kept at bay from Crane's gun, are now climbing on. 5 zombies are attempting to climb the left side of the tank. Joe can also hear glass shattering in the distance. Uh oh, he's been on this ride before... A point-blank shot from the shotgun sends the zombie attacking Joe reeling. It can't maintain its balance so it falls off the tank (Joe attack Success on 2; -3 HP; Zombie Balance Failure on 1). Crane continues firing on the one zombie on her, this time blasting it away. There is a loud "clunk" noise from the very front of the tank. "Slasher!" Crane calls out. Joe can see the snipers smoking and chatting about something. Looks like a zombie catastrophe didn't befall the outpost, so what gives?
Joe blasts the one zombie that managed to reach his side of the tank. It falls off as they tend to do when shot at point-blank (Success on 3 and all that). The zombie that climbed the right side of the tank makes its way towards Joe and will reach him in the following round.

Joe blasts the Slasher while it's climbing around the side of the thank. Good move because the Slasher was in no position to dodge the shot (Success on 2; positive factor gained; -3 HP damage). The slasher can't maintain its grip after that and falls off the tank, but that doesn't mean it's gone for good.
Thankfully, Crane heard Joe when he yelled about the Slasher, so she fires on it when it hits the ground. She easily finishes it off.
Joe moves to reload his shotgun, but the zombie coming around the right side of the tank tries to grab him from behind, but its hands bounce off Joe's football gear (Failure on 2; negative factor due to armor).
The gate to the compound is getting ever closer. Joe could throw his shotgun and easily hit the gate, but more zombies reach for the tank. This time 12 zombies, evenly spread at 4 on every side, reach for the tank. Only 1 on the left and right side, and 2 on the back where Joe is, manage to get a grip.
Crane suddenly stops shooting and looks at Joe. "Rick is going to make a run for the gate! Hold on!"

Joe grabs whatever he can, and being a STRONG guy, he does so with ease. The nearby zombies aren't as lucky, and most are thrown off when the tank accelerates and begins to plow through the remaining zombies. The tank jumps and shivers and shakes as it smashes through the throng of zombies-even with the tank's size and weight that's a lot of bodies to crush-but it eventually reaches the gate to the compound.
The compound gate is surrounded by the debris of a "maze" of tents created by the soldiers to funnel the zombies through an obstacle course, explained much earlier in the game, but has since been destroyed by numerous zombie attacks on the compound. The tank rumbles over this debris and parks itself in front of the gate which is little more than a fence on wheels, although the rest of the wall is a real brick wall. Just beyond the fence is a booth and Joe can see a truck parked just beyond that.
The thing is...the fence gate is closed, nor is it opening.
"Hey, you jerks! Open the gate," Crane shouts. "You've got power now! This thing will open itself with a push of a button. Go push it!"
The snipers on the wall continue to stare at Crane with little concern. Nobody is doing anything. Nobody is shooting the zombies pressing in on the tank.
"OPEN THE GATE! OPEN IT!" Crane shrieks, her voice rising to ridiculously high levels.
And Joe can understand her concern. With the tank now parked in one spot, it's much easier for the zombies to swarm the tank and climb it. Only 6 grab on the back and begin to climb, and there is no roll required for them to hold on now, but Joe can see far more zombies closing in. Even worse, he's pretty sure one zombie about 60 ft. away to his right, near the parking lot Joe first crossed to enter the Dynetech tunnels, is a Strong zombie. Its rippling muscles and rage-filled face make it easily stand out from the rest of the zombies.

Crane nods. "Better than staying here. Let's go!"
Crane hops out of the hatch and runs toward the gate, leaping onto it and beginning to climb. I assume Joe wishes to do the same thing, although he can't get a good grip on the fence (Failure on 1). Crane stays behind long enough to help Joe find a good grip. Once the athlete has found his grip, he proceeds to quickly climb over the fence with Crane. They climb over the top and jump down to the other side. Just as the two jump down from the gate, something smashes into it. They look back and find a car door has been thrown at the gate. The Strong zombie is grabbing heavy objects and throwing them.
Rick does not follow.
This area features a toll booth, but it's more of a secondary area for the gate. The left and right side are completely blocked by metal scraps, and a truck is parked just beyond the gate with the lower part of the truck covered in scraps to block crawlers.
Crane runs up to the truck and kicks it. "Hey, move this thing out of the way!"
But Crane is not the person whom the soldiers resopond. Rick pops out of the tank and yells "If you don't open this gate, I will blow a hole in it and that truck and then you guys will have NO gate!". After this, the gate suddenly slides open while the truck starts up and drives out of the way.
Crane and Joe race inside, followed shortly by Rick in the tank. Zombies rush in and the snipers finally begin firing on them. Joe and Crane spin around, weapons drawn...
A zombie suddenly spasms and falls to the ground for no obvious reason. Then another. And another. The Strong zombie collapses. More zombies fall looking like a human wave at a stadium. Within minutes, every single zombie in sight has collapsed.
Everyone is stunned...except Rick who rounds on one particular soldier. Joe recognizes this soldier as the guy who yelled at Rick and doubted his leadership abilities when Joe first arrived on the boat.
"What the hell were you thinking, leaving us out there like that?" Rick shouts into the soldier's face. "You have a problem with me, fine, but don't you dare think you can get away with pulling a stunt like that!"
The soldier looks from the fallen zombies to Rick. He works his mouth but doesn't say anything, but Joe can clearly see the hate in the soldier's eye.
Lydia suddenly charges out of nowhere and leaps on Joe embracing him in a huge hug (she's back in the game, so you will need to finish her ref. shet).
Joe is now safe in the military compound and is free to trade, heal, etc, but for some reason Joe doesn't feel safe. The zombies appear to have fallen, but something doesn't seem right to Joe. The more Joe thinks about it, the more Joe begins to wonder...
It's half-time.

Hours later, the zombies have not returned to their feet. It appears the zombie apocalypse has ended and many soldiers have celebrated this victory by drinking, dancing around like fools, and generally acting like goofs; however, Rick is still being cautious. He has ordered everyone to stay within the compound and proceed like they're still in the worst of it. For one thing, calls to the military have gone unanswered and they're still patrolling the skies. There is absolutely no evidence they're attempting to enter the city to confirm the threat has passed. Another thing, Crane, going out to examine the corpses, could not find the Strong zombie or any of the Smart zombies.
Rick eventually grabs the army truck and says something about "taking a look around for anything suspicious". Crane also goes out searching for supplies she normally wouldn't dare touch with all the zombies wandering around. Joe is forced to stay within the compound with Lydia who recently finished her work of fixing stuff around the compound (the result of that work depends on what her 33 ref. sheet looks like).
Joe can't shake the uneasy feeling that "the game" is in half-time, and he knows what happens during half-time: the coach berates his players to play better.

The page where Lydia was given her tasks is pg.38.
The results of Lydia's efforts:
-Lydia was unable to alter a crossbow or create a device that could fire circular saw blades. She will need another day to figure it out, but I doubt she will get one before the chapter ends.
-Creating Molotov c*cktails and a couple Propane Tank Flamethrowers for the outpost trader proves to be a trivial task for Lydia. This adds to her Trade Credit.
-Lydia easily discovers a broken taser gun, but she can't repair it. It's far too damaged. She will have to buy a working one or try again the next time she gets a chance to rest; however, she does manage to use a car battery to create a device that can charge some kind of shocking weapon. She can now create one shocking weapon like any of Doug's weapons, although it doesn't have to be similar, or she can sell it for a lot of Trade Credit.
-Lydia has little trouble repairing the broken generator and a number of other small devices and machines around camp. This grants her a good bit of Trade Credit.
LYDIA'S TOTAL TRADE CREDIT:
-One Advanced Firearm assuming you sell the shock device (RPG grenade launcher, C4, landmine, true flamethrower, etc) -Two Large Firearms (shotguns, rifles, etc) OR Two Advanced Melee Weapons (chainsaw, antique katana, etc) -Two Small Firearms (pistols, taser, etc) OR Two Melee Weapons OR Two Practical Tools (First Aid Kits, Shock Therapy Kits, Scent Maskers, Flare Gun, etc.) -Two Grenades or Boxes of Ammo -Up to 10 Minor Tools (flashlights, parts for improvised items like blasting caps, etc).

Joe still feels a little odd.

The trader also isn't too sure what to think of the Special Battery, so he hooks it up to a device to check the charge on it.
"Wow!" he exclaims, "There is enough juice in this thing to power the camp a hundred times over. Hell, maybe more than that. This must be some kind of back-up for Dynetech...or something."

How does an M16 Assault Rifle sound? Or were you looking more at sniper rifles?
Note I had to trade down to get the scent maskers and first aid kit, so you will have to trade Lydia's shocking device and the special battery to complete this purchase. You can trade up the grenades/ammo credit for one First Aid kit or similar value item. Trading the small firearms down, assuming you trade the shock device and special battery, will net you 4 grenades/boxes of ammo.
I'll be using the D20 Equipment list to select the right magazine size for bullets.

As night falls on the outpost, Joe finds himself sitting by a roaring bonfire with Lydia. The few zombies that got into the outpost were quickly destroyed and are now being burned. Joe hid the faces of the burning bodies as best he can with some debris he found, but it might not be enough to lessen the wrongness of the act.
The soldiers don't care. They're too busy drinking and laughing and celebrating to pay any attention to what Joe and Lydia are doing. Some soldiers aren't too happy, like the guy with the buzzcut who has a problem with Rick, but they're sitting well away from the celebration to be a problem.
Crane appears after it gets dark. She has recovered a number of supplies, but she gives most of it to the trader. She has a few gifts for Joe though.
"Remember the stash those two idiots had? I was able to recover a good bit of it. It wasn't as great as they said it was, mostly food, but I did get a few things you could use. Umm...I'm not sure what your girlfriend can do, so I got stuff for you."
Gained: Two boxes of Shotgun Shells, 2 First Aid Kits, 2 Flare Gun shells, A Taser, A Pistol, 4 Beretta Clips

About an hour after Crane comes back, lights from a car can be seen. It turns out to be the truck Rick took, but everyone in the outpost can tell the lights are swinging about erratically like Rick is trying to evade something.
"Open the gate! Something's up," Crane yells. A soldier nods, then runs over to activate the gate mechanism. The fence gate rolls open.
The big military truck appears. A number of gashes along the side of the truck are clearly visible, and one wheel appears to be punctured. It's moving very fast like Rick has the peddle to the medal. He slows down as the truck approaches the outpost, but Rick still risks a sharp turn that nearly causes the truck to ram into the wall. He doesn't even turn the engine off before jumping out. He's breathless.
"What are you doing, you moron!" angry buzzcut soldier yells. "Position the truck so it blocks the gate!"
"No!" Rick yells back. "They're...coming...not...over..."
Buzzcut gives Rick an angry look. "What do you mean 'they're coming'? Wait...did you...? You brought them here, didn't you? They're coming after you and they followed you here? You're gonna kill all of us!"
Rick shakes his head, still too breathless to talk straight. "No! They were...coming...must have...planned...we pissed them off..."
But Buzzcut doesn't give Rick a chance. Buzzcut points and Rick and yells "You did this! You brought this upon us!"
A sudden yell from the walls catches everybody's attention.
"Zombies! They're back! They're...everywhere!" a soldier on the wall yells. "They're...coming this way!"
The familiar sound of hundreds of zombies moaning begins to fill the air. Joe looks to the fence gate and can see some of the zombies that fell begin to return to their feet, although not all zombies are rising. Only about half are reawakening.

Chaos ensues. A couple soldiers run for the truck and attempt to drive it into place. Someone else closes the fence gate while a few zombies trickle in. Numerous soldiers fire on the zombies and quickly take them out.
But then there is a loud "crunching" noise from beyond the gate. The soldiers manning the wall begin to scream and scramble to get off the wall. One jumps off, but the others are suddenly knocked aside by a large object. It looked like a telephone pole.
Joe gets a good view of exactly what hit the soldiers seconds later, it is a telephone pole, when it is used to smash the fence gate down. Into the outpost steps a Juggernaut zombie, this one using completely differents scraps for armor and shield than the last one, and begins to survey the area. After a moment, it begins to smash the truck Rick just vacated, and the unfortunate soul trying to move the truck back into position is caught in the assault.
The soldiers scatter. Some grab their guns and begin firing on the zombies as they spill into the outpost. Others jump through the windows of the 3-storied building and inside. Most, including buzzcut, run around the building towards the docks.
Rick groans. "Forget the helicopter. Run to the boat!"
Joe, Lydia, Crane, and Rick are standing by the victory bonfire near the salvage heap. This is 40 ft. away from the building, 80 away from the helicopter, and 100 ft. away from the juggernaut and normal zombies.

Actually, the whole "fallen zombies" bit was meant to be a justification for why many of the zombies suddenly get a lot stronger, but that was for the D20 rules. It's not necessary for the 33 rules. Also, because it doesn't look like this game will get another player, one of my Chapter 3 only zombies will be appearing soon. It's meant to be a challenge for high level players, so be careful when it appears. You'll know it when it appears. wink.gif
Anywho, Joe, Lydia and the rest of the group sprint for the building. Crane is much quicker than the rest of the group and easily reaches the windows as the last of the soldiers jump in, but she waits for the rest of the group to arrive. When they do, she helps them climb through the windows (map of the building not necessary atm).
The juggernaut zombie continues to hammer the truck until it's a steaming pile of scrap, then it turns its attention on the soldiers attempting to put up a fight. In one great sweep of the telephone pole, most of the soldiers are taken out. They continue to fight, some begin searching for better weapons and one is using Lydia's flamethrowers, but the group doesn't see how the fight turns out. They have entered the building and are crossing the floor to the other side. They throw open the door, run past Dr. Mallus' tent, and head for the jetty to the boat. They can see Dr. Mallus, the salvage trader, and the last of a few soldiers piling into the patrol boat. It's packed with people and buzzcut dude is yelling at everyone to make room.
The group races through the building's unloading area and towards the stairs leading down to the jetty. Crane is once again well ahead of the group and is already at the bottom of the stairs while the rest of the group moves down the stairs. At the sight of Rick coming down the stairs, buzzcut cuts the mooring line, then guns the motor. The boat begins to pull away...
Crane activates her afterburners, figuratively, and really gets going as Rick shouts at the boat to stop, but the boat doesn't stop. It keeps going.
"I thought you wanted to help stranded innocents," buzzcut shouts back. "It's our duty, right? We're finished dying for you. Now it's your duty! You better get to work before..."
But buzzcut is cut off by Crane attempting a leap of faith from the jetty to the boat just as the rest of the group races down the jetty. Amazingly, she manages to reach the boat (Success on 3), clambers up the side and into the boat. The soldiers immediately turn their guns on her, but she ignores them and begins shouting for them to turn the boat around.
Joe, Lydia, and Rick eventually reach the end of the jetty long after it becomes impossible to reach the rapidly fleeing boat. Rick, with a forlorn look, falls to his knees and mumbles something about not doing his duty. The sound of moaning zombies escalates. The group can see slow-moving shapes begin to appear at the top of the stairs.
Crane, looking back from the boat, suddenly shouts a curse and dives back into the water. She quickly swims the distance to the group. A surprised Rick pulls her out of the water and onto the jetty.
"They can't see me," Crane explains. "They never see. I'm safe, but you guys...I need to get you out of here."
"Thanks," Rick replies, then slowly turns back to face the stairs. The lights around the outpost are still working, so the group can clearly see the zombies working their way down the stairs and onto the jetty.
"Nothing is closer than that helicopter, and there are way too many to swim for it. They will get us...some way, some how. We need to fly. It's our only hope," Rick pulls out his assault rilfe, the same one he used to rescue Joe and Lydia. Crane also pulls out her pistol.
"I hope you're ready for this," Rick mumbles to Joe.

Rick is pointing at the stairwell, now marked on the map. As Rick does this, Joe spots a fire extinguisher strapped to the wall near the door to the first room (where the "Z" is). Speaking of "z's", Joe spots the first zombie: it shambles out of that first room, past the fire extinguisher, and proceeds to trip over the corpse of a fallen soldier.
Joe spots a second zombie, coming out of the second room with the firelight, this one marked "o", but this zombie looks a little different from the rest. For one thing, it's looking at Joe with a look of sheer hatred, its mouth fixed into a sneer and its eyes showing bloodlust unlike the deathly eyes of the other zombies. It reminds Joe of a slasher, but this zombie clearly isn't a slasher. Another thing that makes it stand out is its stomach: it doesn't have one. There is a great hole where its abdomen should be and its intestines are hanging out like a bunch of limp noodles.
The first zombie is about 50 ft. away, the weird zombie with no stomach about 60 ft. away.
**Careful! This zombie was designed for Chapter 3!
chiapet chiapet Member Full Members July 2010 edited July 2010 "What the hell is that," Joe asks Crane as he points at the Hole-in-Stomach Zombie.
Joe then suggests they move along the wall and toward the stair well, while fending off the zombies.

"It's new for me too," Rick replies.
Lydia joins the rest of the group. As she does this, the no-stomach zombie undergoes a frightening transformation: the various bits of intestines suddenly animate, each and every strand producing a sharp hook-like piece of bone on the end (they look like ribs), shoot out to a length of about 20 feet, and begin grabbing onto various nearby objects. Four of the lengths grasp the lights in the ceiling, hook on, and lift the whacko zombie into the air and begin carrying it across the room towards the group. The other lengths of intestines begin lashing out blindly.
The other zombie seems happy to chew on the corpse it tripped on. chiapet chiapet Member Full Members July 2010 edited July 2010 Joe and Lydia open fire on the new zombie. Savage Tide Info TGBarighm TGBarighm Member Full Members July 2010 edited July 2010 * * * * * *
Everyone open fires on the new zombie, but the monster proves to be a lot quicker than expected. Joe and Crane unload shells and bullets first: Joe pops the zombie in a dangling leg while Crane pops it in the head like she always does, but this time the bullets don't seem to have any effect.
The zombie then shoots out four lengths of intestines at a crate and picks it up, then carries the crate up to its body. Shots from Lydia and Rick hit the crate. It's using the crate as cover.
The weird zombie moves surprisingly fast and is soon within 30 ft. of the group. This time Crane is somewhat shocked by the use of cover and it's Rick and Joe who score the first attacks, but they're also thwarted by the crate.
The zombie suddenly tosses the crate at the group. Most of the group easily dives out of the way, but Lydia panics and tries to back up instead of diving and gets knocked to the ground. Thankfully, it's not that heavy, but it still hurts (-2 HP).
The zombie is now within 15 ft. of the group.

The zombie stops climbing and falls to the ground, every length of intestines whipping about. Crane and Rick quickly fire on the zombie, both striking it in the head. Half its skull is blown off, but again, the zombie doesn't even flinch.
The intestines attack! Two go for Joe's legs, but the athlete manages to dance around them while a third stabs him in the arm (-1 HP). A length wraps around Crane's legs despite her best efforts and lifts her into the air. Rick somehow manages to avoid every single attack directed his way.
Joe fires on the zombie with his shotgun and blows a hole in its chest. Nothing. Lydia, from her butt, fires at the zombie and hits a length of intestine and blowing it apart in the process (-1 HP).

Everyone stands around and continues to fire on the octozombie.
More intestines shoot out. Lydia continues firing on the intestines, as does Joe. The spread of the shotgun shells helps Joe a lot (positive factor) while Lydia gets lucky and pops a couple more lengths of intestines (-2 HP). This proves to be a huge boon to Joe because he blasts one of the intestines going for him.
Unfortunately, he still gets grappled and lifted into the air, then stabbed (-1 HP). Crane manages to cut herself free using her hatchet and destroys another length of intestine in the process. Rick dodges one length and fires on the zombie's ARMS, because that is what Lydia said, to no avail. He gets stabbed in the process.
On the bright side, there are only 4 lengths of intestine left. But on the dark side, something begins pounding on the bay door directly behind the group. Whatever it is, the impact has already put a huge dent in the door.

Joe is unable to draw his katana before the intestines attack again. Crane tries to help by firing at the length holding Joe in the air, but it turns out her aim isn't as good as Joe thought it was, at least with regards to shooting something smaller than a slow moving zombie. The length holding Joe in the air begins to hook on to him. Thankfully, the hook can't find a good spot to stab the athlete.
Rick begins firing his assault rifle on full auto directly into the octozombie's stomach, and blows an entire clip doing it, but somehow manages to miss every offensive length of intestine in the process. Lydia doesn't fare any better.
The intestines continue to focus on Crane and Rick. Crane ducks a bone-hook headed for her head, but the reduced number of intestines makes it a lot easier to dodge them.
Joe has to drop his shotgun to the ground to reach his katana. When he tries to slash, the intestines respond by shaking him vigorously. This throws his aim way off.
The pounding on the door continues. The dent grows into a bulge.
In the next round...
It's very difficult to move quickly when suspended the way Joe is, but at least Crane is there to lend a hand. She runs up to the length holding Joe and tries to cut it with her hatchet, but the intestine simply bounces off the axe when struck. Rick and Lydia also manage to act first, but they continue to miss. Rick has to reload.
Joe's armor protects him from the hook this round, but Crane gets slashed. Joe finally manages to get a good cut at the length, severs it, and falls to the ground.
The bulge suddenly explodes into a big hole in the bay door. A huge length of metal seems to be the cause of the banging noise. It doesn't look like the bay door can take much more damage. Even worse, the group can hear more zombies getting closers. Shadows begin to fill the opposite rooms.

Lydia moves to help Joe while Crane deals with Rick. The octozombie also hasn't given up, and is chasing the group.
Crane quickly slashes at Rick's Slasher with the hatchet before the zombie can stab the veteran soldier and buries her weapon deeply in its skull, but it's not enough to outright kill the zombie (-3 HP for headshot). Joe is able to get his katana out and proceeds to run the Slasher through (-3 HP). Not a serious injury for a zombie, but Lydia's little taser is: the shock kills the Slasher (-2 HP).
Rick tries to kick his slasher off him, and firing his gun is no help either, so Crane is forced to intervene. She can't accomplish anything and Rick gets stabbed in the gut.
The octozombie hooks itself to the ceiling and swings across the room until it gets close to the party where it tries to grab Rick and Crane. Thankfully, Crane is hard to hit and Rick actually benefits from cover due to that Slasher.
In the next round...
Lydia spins around and fires on the Slasher attacking Rick while Joe charges in with the katana, but in the end, it's a quick hack from Crane that finishes the Slasher off.
The octozombie now moves in. Crane Dodges a hook intended for her, but aside from that the rest of the intestines flail around harmlessly.
Now things are getting bad. The group can now see into the nearest firelit room. They can see zombies crawling through the windows. At least 5 have entered the room and are slowly making their way towards the group. It's a safe bet the same is true for the other firelit room. Joe and Lydia manage to secure their footing (Success on 3 for First Attack), begin sprinting, and manage to put a lot of space between them and the rest of the zombies. Unfortunately, Rick doesn't do as well, and Crane slips on some oil from a fallen can. The octozombie manages to grab Crane by the back of her jacket and lifts her into the air. Rick is lucky and manages to avoid the flailing hooks, but he stops long enough to fire on the intestines suspending Crane. He hits, blows the intestines apart and Crane falls back to the ground. They manage to knock the other intestines away without getting injured.
Joe and Lydia put a lot of distance between Crane and Rick. As they move, Joe spots a First Aid kit and a some cans of highly flammable chemicals sitting on a metal shelf (the grey blocks in the lower right hand corner of the map). As Joe approaches the stairwell, he also notices it is very dark. There is no electricity running to this building. Looks like the soldiers used their generator for other things. At the moment, Joe and Lydia's position is free of zombies, but Crane and Rick are quickly becoming surrounded.
As Joe notes this, the door he blocked is bashed open. A Strong zombie enters the room. More zombies begin appearing through the hole in the bay doors.

Joe fires on the zombies chasing Rick with Crane while Lydia enters the stairwell.
Rick is a turtle. He tries to keep ahead of the zombies, but octozombie grabs him from behind. He spins around and fires, but nobody, not even Crane and Joe, manage to hit anything. The zombies move to surround Rick. Three have reached him and are bending down to bite him. The Strong zombie is charging through the room to reach Rick.
Crane continues to fire on the zombies on Rick, but she makes no move to get closer. She is hitting the octozombie, but she can't nail the length of intestine holding Rick in place.
As this happens, an Engorged zombie emerges from the second firelight room. It's dangerously close to where Rick is fighting to fend the zombies off him.
As for Lydia, she pulls out her flashlight and begins to work her way up the stairs. After only a few steps, she hears a hissing sound. Moments later, a Slasher jumps down from a higher floor and settles on the first stair landing directly in front of Lydia.

The rest of the group doesn't know what is happening to Lydia. They continue to help Rick. Crane fires, but she continues to be of little use. Joe pulls out his shotgun (so I assume) and fires on the Engorged zombie. His shot somehow misses everything. Rick begins to fire while he's getting bitten by zombies and finally manages to save himself: he blasts the remaining length of intestine and the octozombie suddenly keels over. Rick begins to backpaddle, but he also has to navigate around grasping arms.
Of course, now the group has to deal with the Strong zombie. It has passed the forklift and closing on Rick's position very quickly.

Crane spins around and fires on the Slasher when Lydia screams, but her shot is off. Crane begins cursing and mumbling something about her gun being damaged.
There isn't much Lydia can do while pinned. The Slasher continues to live up to its name, Lydia takes another bone to the side. Joe fires the shotgun at the engorged zombie and nails it dead on (Success on 3; -3 HP), then he grabs his katana and runs to Lydia.
Lydia can't get the Slasher off her (Success on 3 to maintain pin), so she fires on it. She manages to shoot the zombie in the chest. When Joe arrives, he buries the sword deep in the zombie's chest (Success on 3; roll of 3 damage bonus brings total damage to -3 HP).
Rick is not doing well. One zombie dives for his foot and grabs on tight while the Strong zombie closes, now only 10 ft. away from Rick. Panic sets in and begins firing his assault rifle on full auto at everything in sight, but again somehow manages to miss everything. The Engorged zombie moves in...
There is a terrific explosion of blood and gore. There is nothing left of the Engorged zombie...above its waist. The explosion knocks all nearby zombie off their feet (and deals 3 HP damage to each). Unfortunately, this includes Rick, who is also thrown to the ground and now in Critical condition. The Strong zombie is not affected.
In the next round...
Joe whips the katana around again, but it's a shot from Crane that finishes the Slasher off. Lydia kicks the zombie off while the remaining group gathers in the stairwell.

Lydia takes one of the cans and immediately gets to work. She runs up the stairs as she goes. Joe follows, as does the Strong zombie. Everyone is able to stay ahead of the Strong zombie, and since everyone has a flashlight, the darkness does not end up being much of a problem.
When they reach the roof, Lydia and Crane run to the center while Joe shuts the door.
Joe is pleasantly surprised to discover the door isn't your average wooden door, but an extremely heavy thing outfitted with thick slabs of steel, multiple dead bolts, fittings for thick steel pipes, and multiple other reinforcements. Looks like the military prepared this in case they ever had to retreat to the roof.
Joe slams the door shut and gets to work placing the bars and locking the door. Moments later, he can hear the Strong zombie bashing the door, but it proves to be too strong for the concrete-rending Strong zombie. Hopefully the zombie doesn't realize it can smash through the brick wall surrounding the door...
"There's guns up here," Crane suddenly announces. "Here's a crate full of ammo and grenades! There's water too and a pile of candy bars in that cooler."
Crane suddenly sighs. "But it does not matter...Slashers will get up here, and that Juggernaut will tear this building down. Look, there's the helicopter. It's completely surrounded by zombies. So close, yet so far..."
Crane is right. Joe peeks over the side of the building. There is a fire escape that will take the group directly to the helicopter, but the entire compound is filled with zombies of all types. The Juggernaut is currently smashing another hole into the bay doors with a telephone pole.

The Juggernaut finds the grip it's looking for and suddenly shoots up the side of the building. Grenades and packs grabbed! To the fire escape.
When they reach it, the first of the Slashers climbing up the side of the building appear. It's 80 ft. away.
Looking down from the fire escape to the helicopter below, it's just at the head of the alley where the compound begins to open up, Joe can see the entire area crawling with zombies. There's not much light in the alley so he can't spot any special zombies. chiapet chiapet Member Full Members July 2010 edited July 2010 Joe hands a grenade to Lydia and draws his Katana. Defensive stance.
(is the blood pack big enough for Lydia to open and drop a live grenade inside and then throw? If so, she does that, otherwise she starts down the fire escape.) Savage Tide Info TGBarighm TGBarighm Member Full Members July 2010 edited July 2010 * * * * * *
Lydia assembles her blood bomb with ease, she doesn't even spill any blood, then tosses it into the crowd of zombie below. Joe settles into a defensive position just as Crane fires on the Slasher. The distance is large enough to ruin her shot.
The Slasher leaps from the edge of the building to the stash of ammo, then again into an open area on the roof. It's now only 40 ft. away from the group. Another Slasher appears and takes the place of the previous one.
Lydia throws the blood bomb directly in a throng of zombies at the bottom of the fire escapes. It explodes and deals 3 HP damage to all nearby zombies, and that's quite a few considering how closely packed together they are. Many lose limbs as a result of the explosion. As for the blood, it's hard to tell how well it spread from this height. chiapet chiapet Member Full Members July 2010 edited July 2010 "Go," Joe says as he hands Lydia another grenade. Lydia simply pulls the pin on this one and drops it over the edge before starting down the fire escape. Savage Tide Info TGBarighm TGBarighm Member Full Members July 2010 edited July 2010 * * * * *
Down Lydia and the grenade goes. She manages to get the grenade to land in the exact same spot as the previous grenade. The explosion from this grenade finishes nearly every zombie previously wounded by the first grenade, opening up a nice hole in the throng around the fire escape. Not only that, but it looks like the other zombies are distracted a bit by the blood. Some are staying in one spot and looking around for something.
As for Joe and Crane, they deal with the first Slasher. Crane fires again, and misses again, then shouts a curse to the heavens. The zombie leaps up to Joe, falls just short of actually reaching him and the athlete uses this chance to slash at the slasher. Unfortunately, the zombie just ducks the blade.
The second Slasher is now within 40 ft. By the sound of crashing and banging, it sounds like the next zombie to appear at the edge of the building will be a Strong zombie. chiapet chiapet Member Full Members August 2010 edited August 2010 Lydia won't get too far ahead. Joe suggests to Crane that they retreat onto the fire escape so they don't get surrounded. Savage Tide Info TGBarighm TGBarighm Member Full Members August 2010 edited August 2010 * * * * * *
Joe and Crane fall back to the fire escape while fighting off the Slashers. The first Slasher suddenly leaps onto Joe's chest and knocks him backwards, over the side of the building, and onto the fire escape. In the chaos of flailing limbs, Joe gets stabbed twice by the slasher (-2 HP). Joe does a little stabbing of his own and runs the Slasher through with the katana (-3 HP).
The second Slasher leaps but falls short of Crane. The Strong zombie has now climbed up to the rooftop.
Crane whips out her hatchet and hacks the first Slasher's head off, then helps Joe to his feet.
Lydia starts moving down the fire escape, but she stops to check on Joe.

Everyone gets their rears in gear and race down the fire escape before the other Slasher and Strong zombie can arrive on the scene...at first.
There is no sign of the Strong zombie, but the second Slasher begins climbing down the side of the fire escape. By the second floor, it catches up to the group and leaps at Lydia. She is pinned, but is knocked into Joe (who misses with the katana) and is able to keep the slashing bones away from her. Crane attempts to lean over the rail to hack the zombie, but it's an awkward attempt.
Joe, getting more familiar with that katana, is quick to react in the next round and delivers a slash worthy of any samurai: he hacks the Slasher's head clean off. Lydia quickly pushes the Slasher's corpse away and the group continues down the stairs. When they reach the ladder, Joe hits the release and the ladder descends to the ground.
The entire fire escape suddenly begins to shake and vibrate. The group looks up and can see the Strong zombie bashing its away down the stairs like a mad bull. It doesn't appear to be trying to damage the fire escape directly, it's just kicking and punching randomly.
Looking down, Joe can see the helicopter is only 30 ft. away now, off to the left. The area directly beneath the fire escape has been cleared of zombies, but 30 or so are still wandering about-there's an Engorged zombie about 30 ft. to Joe's right, but he thinks they can outrun that one-and a good bunch of zombies still stand between the group and the helicopter.
Joe can also see movement in the helicopter now. There is no doubt about it now. There is someone in there. chiapet chiapet Member Full Members August 2010 edited August 2010 "There's someone in the helicopter," Joe says. "Quick, let's move." Joe will throw the grenade toward the engorged zombie, then flee as fast as possible without leaving Lydia behind toward the helicopter.
Lydia will open fire on the zombies betwen her and the helicopter as she goes. Savage Tide Info TGBarighm TGBarighm Member Full Members August 2010 edited August 2010 (I made the rolls and have determined you manage to successfully reach the helicopter. The game is now over) * * * * * * *
As soon as his feet slap against the pavement, Joe launches the remaining grenade at the Engorged zombie. The grenade bounces off the head of another zombie and directly down the shirt of the Engorged zombie. The following explosion is immediately echoed by a second explosion of blood and guts, sending many zombies to the ground. Many more are utterly destroyed. This pretty much clears the right side of the alley.
The left side is a different story. Many of the zombies are still distracted by the blood dropped by Lydia, but some have turned to face the group and appear curious. Crane must have suspected this would happen because she suddenly pulls out a vial and begins splashing a foul liquid on everyone. The group becomes Stinky and races to the helicopter with minimal contact with the other zombies, but Joe and Crane hack at the passing zombies just to be sure.
The door to the helicopter suddenly opens revealing its occupant: a soldier wearing glasses.
"Holy cow! Someone did survive," the soldier yells. "Look, I can fly this thing out of here, and I was going to, but we're not going anywhere as long as that big bast..."
"We took care of the Juggernaut," Crane yells. "Now get your butt out of here."
"**** yeah!" the soldier happily cheers and immediately begins reaching for various knobs and switches. "Someone needs to disconnect the fuel line first."
"I'll do it. The rest of you get inside," Crane replies. Lydia is more than happy to jump into the helicopter, but Joe looks at Crane with a note of concern in his face. He knows what she is like. He knows what she may be planning to do.
There is a sound of the fuel line being disconnected and the helicopter's blades revving up. The Strong zombie has touched down on the ground, and the other zombies are closing in, but Crane doesn't seem to be the least bit concerned. She appears next to the helicopter and glances at Joe. Joe opens the door to motion her inside, but she only shakes her head.
"The military is still watching the skies. I'd rather take my chances down here," she replies. With one last smile, she pulls down her gas mask and nightvision goggles, then immediately turns on the zombies. The undead have begun to surround the helicopter, but a series of flash grenades and exploding blood packs suddenly erupt all over the place. It looks like Crane is blowing all of her supplies just to protect the vehicle. It's enough and the helicopter begins to rise into the sky.
"Hey! Close that door. She will be fine. She is a survivor," the pilot shouts over the roar of the helicopter's blades. Joe reluctantly closes the door and admits there is nothing that can be done. The compund begins to shrink as the helicopter rises into the sky. The tiny black form of Crane, still standing in one spot and watching the helicopter rise, suddenly disappears into the sea of undead.
The helicopter rises and begins to hover over the river. It is getting close to Grand Central Bridge that spans Delta City's river.
"She is right about the military," the pilot says, "We can't fly out of here. We just need to find a safe place to land. How about those green lights? They've been broadcasting aid for survivors, I'll bet they will help us...oh crap. Oh crap!"
The pilot's frightened yells are entirely justified: two sudden flashes of light have lit up the horizon.
"Rockets! The fires must have caught their attention! Damn...we're sitting ducks in this thing. I'm gonna get as close to the bridge as possible and then we will have to jump..."
The helicopter's nose drops and begins speeding toward the suspension cables supporting the bridge. The burning light, the rockets, speed toward the helicopter at incredible speed. The two race towards eachother, their meeting inevitable. Both approach the bridge, and...
The helicopter's blades are torn to shreds on the suspension cables. The rockets strike the cables and are blown apart. Everything is a cloud of flying debris and broken glass as the helicopter begins to spin out of control. Joe is bounced around the helicopter like a pinball and eventually finds himself pinned beside Lydia. The two stare into each other's eyes amidst the chaos and frantic yells of the pilot.
And then there is darkness.
CHAPTER 1: COMPLETE
This is where Chapter 2: Act 1-THE BRIDGE would have began. In case you're curious, it would have just been Joe and Lydia from here on.
I'll post the Plot Notes for this game tomorrow at which point this game will be officially finished. TGBarighm TGBarighm Member Full Members August 2010 edited August 2010 PLOT NOTES: ===========
The zombie apocalypse is the result of puppet-interface testing by a group of aliens.
THE BEGINNING
A long time ago, an alien race mastered biological technology and figured out a way to convert their thoughts, memories, and experiences into a form of software that could be transferred between computers. They created artificial organisms using highly advanced and nearly indestructible flexible materials. They combined the two with their computers and were able to create a nearly immortal organism completely controlled by the memories of its host.
In other words, they learned how to transfer their minds into immortal artificial organisms. It resembles a spider about the size of a hand.
As expected, this highly advanced and expensive technology was deemed too valuable to all but the most intelligent and successful beings alive, and soon nearly all of the elite were converted into these organisms.
A coincidental astrological phenomenon eventually destroyed the planet. The elites in their new bodies created a fleet of ships and escaped the destruction and fled to a new planet their scouts discovered centuries before the end of their world.
Earth. Naturally.
THE HISTORY
For a long time, the aliens were content to live in isolated communities hidden away from the primitive peoples inhabiting the planet, but after awhile, they began to miss their former lives. Originally, an alien could "plug" themselves into their former body and use it just like the always had. Criminals figured out a way to use this method to take over any being's body. The aliens decided to adapt this technology to apply to human beings. After many decades of testing, they eventually perfected this technology and soon had bodies again.
But this technology came at a cost. Thousands of humans had to die to perfect the technology. Many tribes revolted against the testing; others began to regard the aliens as gods. All had to be destroyed to keep the secret.
Much like their need to recover their bodies, the aliens eventually grew to lust for more things, mostly the many wonders of a fully developed civilization. Some groups of aliens did that very thing and created wondrous and legendary civilizations lost to history, but some aspect of their new bodies clouded their judgment. Their lust for power was greater in the bodies of humans, and many found themselves in wars. Many humans were taken into these new civilizations, but they took sides and began denouncing the aliens for what they were: false gods.
The aliens, concerned with their safety and unwilling to allow their existence to become ingrained into aetheric human consciousness, a technology they learned about many millenia ago on their own planet, decided to destroy their own civilizations before the knowledge of their existence could spread too far.
Many humans escaped these calamities, and some aliens took pity on them and shared their knowledge with them, just enough to survive in the hostile world the aliens created. Humanity eventually forgot about the incident, and the story of the aliens passed on into legend.
But the aliens themselves did not go away.
They continued to exist, returning to their isolated and hidden villages to live out their days, but their need to live natural lives was not extinguished in the calamity. After they were certain they were forgotten, the aliens began to creep back into the population, possessing bodies and living on their lives. They were much more discreet about it this time, swearing never to do something so rash as to build a highly advanced civilization on an uncivilized world ever again.
Time passed. Many of the aliens produced human offspring and grew attached to their new families. They eventually revealed their secret to their children and many went on with a new perspective on life. Many of these children began to see people who weren't "blessed" with the parents they had as inferior creatures. Many atrocities occurred as a result, but the aliens were loathe to interfere beyond a simple parental scolding. They did not wish to reveal their existence.
But it was inevitable. As human civilization advanced, many humans who knew about the aliens' existence sought them out for knowledge and power. The aliens co-operated largely due to family ties, but they were wary of these humans' intentions. This created an uneasy alliance of sorts as the two sides were suspicious of the other.
The aliens were able to overcome this problem by assassinating the more intelligent and imaginative humans privvy to their existence and convincing the rest that they were the only aliens in the universe. Combined with an incremental sharing of knowledge, the two sides eventually began to trust eachother again.
THE CATALYST
That all changed when a mysterious alien vehicle crashed in Roswell, New Mexico. This was an entirely different group of aliens proving once and for all that there were, indeed, other aliens in the universe.
This revelation created a rift between the founding alien species and the human family members, now mostly comprised of elites with important positions of authority. The two sides could no longer trust eachother which led to titanic conflicts between numerous countries secretly run by alien puppets.
The aliens eventually settled the dispute by promising to share their technology with any extended relative willing to commit to the transformation, but they needed time and many years of testing and research to convert human existence patterns into a form of software that can be transferred into the aliens' existing vehicles.
They needed a lot of time, a lot of technology, and a lot of money to achieve their goals. The money was generated, the aliens' technology allowed to thrive and prosper, and they were given the time. But they needed test subjects. Lots of test subjects. Test subjects filled nearly to the eyes with technology capable of measuring and data-filing human existence patterns.
The aliens planned a careful extraction of humans for testing all over the world, but the relatives wanted results. One particular alien lost his temper and proposed a massive single, short-term test that could be executed within a few weeks on an enormous population center for a huge return of data. To make sure they got the best data possible, they needed a way to ensure the maximum number of test subjects were acquired in the minimum amount of time and remained co-operative for the entire test.
The answer was nanomachines utilizing a form of technology similar to the aliens ability to "plug into" other people, but instead of intelligence, they used a pre-programmed set of instructions turning subjects into machines. Some subjects would merely exist to transfer data. Others would excel at spreading the nanomachines from subject to subject.
This would essentially mimic a zombie invasion. To help implant the idea of a mythical "zombie apocalypse", and help deter the test subjects from suspecting anything but, they funded and helped aid the creation of a popular sub-genre: the zombie movie. When the test is finally executed, nobody will be able to see it as anything but a zombie apocalypse.
The plan was put into motion, but the relatives could not wait. As soon as a workable prototype was created, they launched the test on a chosen city.
SPECIFICS
-The purpose of the test is to gather human aetheric data and determine how they react to processing a small part of the aliens' technology.
-The nanomachines, as advanced as they are, needed instructions to function properly, and the aliens can't be on hand to monitor the test at all times, so they need to handle it remotely. They developed a light-based communication system that transmitted its information using a patterned series of blinking lights. More specifically, green lights to avoid confusion with other forms of light-based mediums (nobody shines a bright green light into the sky).
-Not all test subjects need to receive instructions. Only a few need to receive the instructions. They can then broadcast the instructions using sound and physical vibrations. The test subjects using broadcast capable equipment needed to maintain their sense of survival seeing as how important they were to the entire test. These are the Smart Zombies.
-The nanomachines can alter their hosts to take on a multitude of different tasks, although the test subject's physical traits usually determined exactly what purpose they took on. Many different types of subjects were augmented in different ways to deal with possible threats they may encounter while trying to acquire new test subjects in the city: the Strong zombies for bringing down barricades, the Slasher zombies for searching out hidden targets, the Engorged zombies for splashing nano-infused blood around for maximum exposure, the Octozombies to seek out and destroy any survivors who proved to be exceptionally skilled survivalists, etc.
THE TRICK
The aliens aren't actually co-operating because they have given in to the relatives. In reality, they plan to destroy those who have clearly become corrupted. They want to wipe-out hundreds of key population centers and ensure the destruction of as many relatives and any possible knowledge of the aliens' existence as possible. Sharing technology and going along with the test was merely a ruse to feign full co-operation. It gave the aliens the time they needed to determine a course of action and to plan its execution.
They came into contact, and made a deal with, the other group of aliens to provide support during this exercise. Their technology and identities known, they needed another unknown form of technology to move their homes and knowledge to a new, safer place while they simeltaneously placed devices to destroy targets. Such a device is placed in a ship and being transported into Delta City, although its purpose is not to simply destroy the city, but to release a new wave of nanomachines to infect the entire continent and set off specially prepared bombs which can only be activated by a signal unique to this particular set of nanomachines.
