The more Lia thinks about this entire situation, the more she finds something indescribable wrong with it.
"If we talk, let's make it quick. I'm feeling uneasy about this."

Gandt will accompany Lia and James, if they still choose to go speak with the old woman. "Cover us, will ya...?" he mutters to Kit and Illyria before departing.
He casts Eyes of the Avoral before approaching, and keeps a lookout for danger. Like spiders that are too close for comfort, any weapons the woman might be carrying, or anything resembling a trap. He readies a nonlethal shield slam if there's any sign of hostility.

Relunctantly, James, Gandt and Lia approach Lithira. The old woman smiles kindly as they approach. Closer to the woman, they can now tell the throne is made of bone and spider webs. Also, numerous spiders of various sides skitter out of sight as the trio approaches.
James reaches for his daggers, but Lithira waves her bony hand. The skittering immediately stops. "Forgive my daughters, it has been a long time since we have had visitors. They have forgotten how to behave."
Lia quickly translates for James and Gandt. James relaxes somewhat, but Gandt keeps a firm grip on his shield.
"Please, I would hear more about your journey," Lithira says to Lia.
Lia again translates the request to James and Gandt, and with a nod from James begins the tale. At several points in the exchange, Lithira interupts with questions, but for the most part she remains silent. James and Gandt quickly become lost, as neither can understand Sylvan, so they settle for surveying the ruins for any threats. Despite numerous spider webs, they're not unable to spot any spiders at all.
The conversation continues for nearly a hour, before finally Lia has ran out of things to say, and Lithira has ran out of questions. With a smile she thanks Lia.
"I thank you for your tale. The world beyond sounds truly wondrous and I would very much like to visit it one day. As for your journey, there is little I can do to aid you. You should know that the way south is dangerous. There are unnatural things that lurk in the dark places, now more so than in the past. I know that four eyes have gazed upon you and their servant seeks you out. You would do well to avoid him. "If you plan to head south, take the dark mountain pass that travels under the peaks. It was made by the ancient ones, but beware--hungry birds nest near its opening not far from here, and they are fierce near their young. May you wander the web to find your way home."
With that, Lithira suddenly transforms into a large, hairy mounstrous spider and scuttles away.
James suppresses a shudder, while Lia translates Lithira's parting words. The trio quickly return to the group and inform them of what Lithira had to say.
"I suggest we get moving," James says at the end. "Lithira said the pass entrance is not far from here, and I figure we're going to have to battle a few more of those birds to get in. Any idea what she meant by four eyes?"

"Anyway I'd prefer to travel in the day. At night we'll be dealing with terror birds and who knows what else."

"The whole thing unnerved me," James says. "Let's just get going. Illyria, Skald, take the point, but be on the look out for more of those large birds. They're probably nesting near the pass entrance."
Illyria and Skald take off at a trot, quickly putting a considerable distance between themselves and the rest of the party, as they all head westward.
Thirty minutes later Illyria spots some droppings along the side of the path (+15XP). Skald examines them as well, determinining that they appear to be bird droppings. Moving with increased stealth, the duo creep along the trail until they come upon a clearing. Illyria motions for Skald to stay put and continues on ahead, each of her footfalls perfectly placed to achieve maximum silence. (+50XP) The clearing stretches nearly 50 feet, before the trail enters a darkened tunnel in the mountain side. All around the opening are numerous nests, and Illyria counts several small terror birds, two terror birds like the ones that attacked the party sitting on nests to the right of the tunnel, while a third wanders around the edge of the clearing. A fourth bird, larger than the rest nests to the left of the tunnel.
Illyria quietly retreats to Skald's location, and together they return to the rest of the party and relay the situation at the tunnel entrance.
(The party is now about 15 minutes from the tunnel. Any preparatory actions?)

Illyria attempts to shoot at the normal sized terror birds first.
If she is able to use Invisibility/Sudden Strike on the largest terror bird she will do that.
Also, like Kit, she will try to stay close to Gandt.

Gandt takes the lead and gets Ready to attack the first bird that approaches (Shield Slam, if possible). If he can Move Silently enough to get the guard bird before it raises an alarm, great, but he's not counting on it.

The group advances on the terror birds, with James, Illyria, and Skald advancing slightly ahead to get in position to surprise the terror birds. James and Illyria get into position without any problem, but Skald steps on a dead branch, which snaps loudly, alerting the terror birds.
Init: Kit: 25 (currently hidden) Lia: 21 (currently hidden) Mother Bird: 19 NPCs: 18 (all hidden but skald) Terror Birds (normal): 14 Illyria: 13 (currently hidden) Gandt: 11 (currently hidden) James: 11 (currently hidden)
Round 1:
Kit holds his position near Gandt.
Lia fires from the rear, but the arrow flies wide. The terror birds fail to spot her.
The Mother Bird charges Skald with an angry squawk. The unlucky ranger finds himself on the wrong side of a beak with an attitude, and quickly drops to the forest floor, in tatters (-1HP, dying)
Amelia and Lirith fire their bows at the mother bird. Amelia hits, but the effect is minimal (-5HP). Avner stays in the rear with his horse. The Mother bird spots Lirith, but so far has not detected Amelia.
The two of the normal terror birds charge into the forest. Neither of them spot the party.
Illyria concentrates her fire on the Mother bird. She hits! (-17HP). The mother bird fails to spot the ninja, but the normal birds do, if only because they are closer (30 feet away).
Gandt gets into the fray. His sudden presence startles the two normal birds (frightened, 1 round) as he charges right at the larger bird. He slashes ferociously with his shield, sending blood and feathers flying (-22HP).
James takes aim at the mother bird, and fires as well. His bolt punches right through the feathers (-15HP). He manages to duck back down without being seen.
Round 2:
Kit sneaks up behind Gandt. Somehow, he manages to get right behind the half-merrow without being spotted by the birds.
Lia fires another arrow. This one fares slightly better, as it strikes the target, but only minimally (-2HP). She remains hidden as well.
(Okay, wtf is up with these birds' poor eyesight?)
The Mother bird, covered in blood and throughly pissed, turns her full attention on Gandt. Her beak rips a goodly amount of flesh from Gandt's shoulder (-19HP) but neither of her hooked talons manages to find their target.
Skald ebs closer to death. Amelia and Lirith fire again. The Mother bird is too engaged for either to have a clear shot, so they concentrate on the closest of the normal birds. Both hit, the the damage is neglible (-3HP). Both are no longer hidden.
The normal terror birds race toward Illyria. One of them manages to take a light nip out of the ninja (-9HP)
Illyria vanishes, draws her bow back, and fires point blank at the terror bird. The arrow pegs the bird hard as Illyria reappears and takes a step back, but not hard enough to put it down (-24HP).
Gandt rears back, unleashes a primal roar, and slashes the hell out of the mother bird (-44HP). The Mother bird backpedals away from the blow.
Seeing the perfect opportunity, James fires another bolt at the mother bird. The bolt hits, but doesn't bring the beast down. The Mother bird lets out a feeble squawk.
Status: Kit: 25 (currently hidden) Lia: 21 (currently hidden), -2 arrows Mother Bird: 19, -109HP NPCs: 18, L&A: -2 arrows, S: -2HP, dying Terror Birds (normal)x3: 14 (-27HPx1) Illyria: 13, -2 arrows, -9HP Gandt: 11, -19HP James: 11, -2 bolts

Kit wonders why his legs aren't carrying him to the fight like he intended them to. Since he seems anchored to one spot, yet close enough to the fight to get a good view of things, he'll pull out his bow and perform Sneak Attacks with that.

With a growl, Gandt charges after the big bird, meaning to finish it off. Hopefully that that will discourage the remaining terror birds.
Also, not sure of Skald's position, but block him from the birds if possible.

Illyria will try to use Invisibility/Sudden Strike to bring down the mother bird.
If it goes down beforehand, she will then focus on the next largest of the terror birds.
If she is unable to get a clear shot of the mother bird, or if the close by terror birds continue their assault, she will switch to her short sword and Invisibility/Sudden Strike them.

(I thought you wanted Kit to stay near Gandt...)
Round 3:
Kit steps out around Gandt and fires an arrow at the mother bird, taking it down easily (+1 kill). The bird screeches as it collaspes to the ground. Silence momentarily fills the forest, before the remaining terror birds suddenly being squawking twice as loud. (Kit is spotted by the remaining birds)
Lia fires on the wounded terror bird, pegging it with a solid hit (-5HP). The birds spot Lia.
Skald edges a little closer to death. (-3HP)
Amelia and Lirith fire on the wounded terror bird. They both hit, doing a considerable amount of damage to the creature (-20HP). It flops over, dead.
The remaining terror birds turn their fury on Kit, with the one even abandoning the nest (it doesn't reach Kit this turn). Kit manages to take only a slight claw scratch from the enraged terror bird (-5HP).
Illyria vanishes, sights on the terror bird, and unleashes an arrow. The arrow bounces harmlessly off of Gandt's armor.
Gandt attacks, trying to place himself between Kit and the terror bird. He manages to get a good whack in (-14HP).
With Gandt half blocking his view of the remaining bird in the forest, James unleashes a ray of frost at the approaching bird. Unfortunately, it hits a low shrub and freezes a good portion of its branches without harming the bird.
Round 4:
Kit steps back, out of the reach of the bird, and fires a pair of arrows. Only one hits, and the damage is neglibile (-3HP).
Lia fires at the oncoming bird. She misses.
Skald edges closer to death (-4HP). Amelia and Lirith fire at the approaching bird. Amelia hits the bird (-6HP), while Lirith's bow snaps in two as she draws it back. She ends up sitting on her ass.
The terror birds continue their assault on Kit. He gets scraped by one claw (-2HP) and cut pretty hard by another (-6HP), but dodges and weaves around the remaining strikes.
Illyria vanishes, draws her shortsword, and charges. She only manages a decent sized cut on the closest terror bird (-11HP).
Gandt tries to batter the closest bird, but misses.
James holsters his crossbow and draws his daggers.
Kit: 25, -13HP, -3 arrows, +1 kill Lia: 21, -4 arrows NPCs: 18, L&A: -4 arrows, S: -4HP, dying Terror Birds (normal)x2: 14 (-17HPx2) Illyria: 13, -3 arrows, -9HP Gandt: 11, -19HP James: 11, -2 bolts, Spu: 0thx1

Lia notices she's been spotted, so she sends out Tamaska in a hurry as a distraction as she puts away her bow and draws her shield. She will move toward Skald and cast CLW on him. After these actions, she will draw her sword and strike the closest terror bird.
Tamaska is to dart around, but not attack unless caught, trying to keep attention off her until she can draw her weapon. Once Lia draws, then he should disappear into the forest and return once pursuit is lost.

(Not stay near him and do nothing, but stay near him, single out any target Gandt is attacking, and flank it to set up sneak attacks) * * * * *
Kit will go back to his rapier and trade 3 atk. for 3 AC, and use extra attacks if possible. He will try to flank any terror bird Gandt is attacking if possible. If things go bad, Kit will Tumble out of the fray and join the archers on the backlines and hopefully get some healing.

Round 5:
Kit switches to his rapier and moves to flank with Gandt. As Kit tries to close, the bird takes a quick peck at him with its beak, landing a solid blow (-7HP).
Lia sends Tamaska into the fray, while she stows her bow and readies her shield. Tamaska darts in, grabs the terror bird attack Kit by the leg, crushing the bone (-12HP) and tripping the bird in the process. It falls with a heavy thud.
Skald ebs closer to death (-5HP) Amelia and Lirith stow their bows and draw their swords. Urol suddenly moves from his position in the rear near Avner, towards Skald's body.
The birds continue the Kit butcherfest 2007! He gets raked by one claw and one beak attacks (-14HP).
Illyria draws her sword and moves in to support Kit. She slices, she dices, and one bird goes down. (+1 kill)
Gandt slams his shield into the remaining bird, slicing through feathers and skin with ease (-17HP).
James runs over, brining his daggers to bare slicing the air harmlessly.
Round 6:
Bleeding heavily, Kit tumbles away from the bird, towards Lia. Unfortunately, he's not quite nimble enough, and gets nailed by a rapid beak strike that sends him sprawling across the forest floor, coming to rest on top of Skald's remains (-16HP).
Lia moves over to Kit and Skald, and immediately casts her spell on Kit. It only heals a minimal amout of cuts and bruises (+7HP).
The remaining terror bird decides to make a break for it as well.
(It flees deep into the forest, away from the party.)
Urol casts two spells on Skald, brining him back to the land of the living.
Exp: Lia: 680, James, Gandt: 840, Kit, Illyria: 925
Status: Kit: -45HP Skald: -28HP Illyria: -9HP Gandt: -19HP

He'll heal up to 30 HP of Kit's next. "You're still good at pissing people off, I'll give you that."
